jetpks··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Gmail that are new, cool, etc?
I get this too with my `.systems` tld. It's really not that much of a problem when I'm telling someone my email address out loud.

What I have problems with are old html/js forms not accepting it for one reason or another.

jetpks··on A Message to 2600 Readers and Writers
A 1% loss of Greenland's ice mass raises seas by 6cm. A 1% loss of ice from the Antarctic, polar, and Greenland sheets will yield 76cm rise in sea level. This puts entire European and American cities under water.

If all three melt entirely, we are looking at about 70m of sea level rise bringing the oceans to the heartland of America.

Those numbers don't take into account other glaciers or thermal expansion of water as the base line temperature rises.

As sea levels rise, hundreds of millions of people will be displaced and die trying to relocate. See: any time in history people have tried to move en masse.

Surely, human kind will survive. Life will surely survive. I think you're nuts if you think anything remotely related to the status quo will survive the next century.

We are looking at about a meter of sea level rise in the next 80 years based on current data sets: http://kaares.ulapland.fi/home/hkunta/jmoore/pdfs/jev_moore_...

jetpks··on Depressed children respond differently to rewards than other kids
> Speaking from personal experience, if a 3 or 4 year old is displaying symptoms of depression, there's shit happening at home and the parents are neck-deep in denial about their role and pigs will fly before they get help for their kid.

Depression definitely can be caused by abuse. In fact if you're being abused you are probably also depressed.

Depression and other mental illnesses are also often caused by things that can't be externally influenced at all.

Casually linking poor parenting with mental illness enforces a stigma that discourages people from seeking treatment for themselves or for their children.

jetpks··on You Are Not Paid to Write Code
Hello fellow Operator.
jetpks··on NSTouchBar API Reference
Probably the vernacular they've been using internally for the last year during development.
jetpks··on Libtiff goes offline
libtiff.org is a major release behind.
jetpks··on Scalable and secure access with SSH
LDAP works really well until you have either too many users, or too many endpoints. Then it doesn't work at all. There's no (cost effective) way to get past all of the replication traffic flying all over the place. Eventually consistent models are awful for things like ssh keys and passwords that's exacerbated significantly when you add caching to the mix to ease the load on your ldap cluster.

Adding extra brittle moving parts like LDAP and linux clustering to a greenfield deployment just doesn't seem attractive when a CA is so easy to run, and you should already have one if you're doing config management sanely.

jetpks··on PEGASUS iOS Kernel Vulnerability Explained
This was the real news to me. Apple had to know OS X was vulnerable when they released iOS 9.3.5, yet they waited until yesterday to push updates.
jetpks··on Twitter shut down Emojitracker's access
> In the email, we encourage people who believe their app is within the bounds of acceptable use cases on Twitter to contact us directly, and provide a link to do so.

I don't see any encouragement or really any path to recourse in the email. It reads as though the decision is final. Email linked from blog post: https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/2000/1*MoLgPNLiQwQ8s-Y1D...

jetpks··on In search of the perfect URL validation regex
Why are these in the `should fail' section?

    http://www.foo.bar./
    http://10.1.1.1
    http://10.1.1.254
    http://10.1.1.0
    http://10.1.1.255
The top one is just a fully qualified domain name, and the rest could be valid host addresses depending on your subnet size.
jetpks··on Yum is dead, long live DNF
I don't know about you, but I'd rather use the tool that I don't have to hack the training wheels off of first when I'm trying to update 100,000 machines to mitigate a critical security issue.
jetpks··on Yum is dead, long live DNF
> Yum is dead

Seems more like `dnf.baseurl.org` is dead (it's down right now).

jetpks··on AWS Lambda as a back end for a single-page app
The author addresses this in the article. About 2 paragraphs after it first appears.
jetpks··on A minimal blog engine written in Go, compatible with Ghost themes
If you're downloading random unsigned debs/rpms from the internet and installing them, then you're just as wrong as downloading/execing a binary.

If you're downloading rpms/debs, verifying the signatures, and you trust the signer, then you're probably fine. Those signature signing/checking mechanisms are already built into rpm/deb, which is why they're being argued for.

jetpks··on The sad state of sysadmin in the age of containers
> it's the sysadmin's responsibility to insist on production deployments

What decade are you from? No startups are hiring sysadmins to do any kind of work anymore. They're hiring "dev-ops" people, which seems to mean "Amateur $popularLanguage developer that deployed on AWS this one time."

That's the whole problem with the dev-ops ecosystem. None of these dev-ops people seem to have any ops experience.

jetpks··on Stop using tail -f (mostly)
Correct, however the author is saying that there's no reason to ever use tail unless you're tailing multiple files, which is false. Most of the functionality you want is already built into your terminal emulator. If you want slower updates (`less` uses 1 second polling, vs `tail` [inotify]), and the ability to search, by all means, use `less`.
jetpks··on Stop using tail -f (mostly)
If you're using a modern terminal with scrollback, you already have the ability to pause, and scroll back.

    # tail -f busy.log
< see something of interest >
ctrl+s # Stops flow of output.
    pgup/pgdn for navigation # fn+up/dn for OS X users
    ctrl+q # Continues flow.
No need to reinvent the wheel, the functionality you want is probably built into the tools you're already using.
jetpks··on Heartbleed Alexa top 10000
Yes. I've been using this tool: http://filippo.io/Heartbleed/

It was published in a comment in one of the other heartbleed threads.
