jesalg··on Ask HN: What did you make during lockdown?
I recently built a online text editor which lets you generate shareable documents with complex charts, graphs, mathematics, and more using the simplicity of Markdown.

https://quickviz.app/

It's built on top of the Pandoc, Graphviz, and MathJax

jesalg··on Amazon Ring went from a smart doorbell company to a surveillance network
Eufy also offers a wired doorbell with local storage. It was also on sale for $99 over Thanksgiving weekend so I got one to try it out.
jesalg··on Ask HN: What are you thankful for?
I'm thankful for having finally found a beautiful home that I could afford in a very populated city

I'm thankful for the birth of my beautiful, happy and healthy baby

I'm thankful for working in an industry where my skills are in demand and has plenty of opportunities to work from home

I'm thankful for my wife who is an incredibly strong, kind and inspiring woman as well as an amazing mom

I'm thankful for living in the U.S which has given me many opportunities to be grateful for

jesalg··on New Mac Pro Tech Specs
Yes. I have a company issued 2018 MBP 2.6 GHz i7 & 16GB RAM but I prefer to do most of the dev work on my HEDT running Linux (Ubuntu 16.04), 4.0 GHz i7 & 32GB RAM.

It's way better at running Docker instances, a bunch of electron apps, and tons of Chrome tabs simultaneously without a hitch.

jesalg··on Show HN: See a Satellite Tonight. No Telescope Required
This is ingenious! Love the use of Google Street View.

Reminds me of a small project I put together which offered a reverse perspective of the ISS: http://www.loworbit.co/

jesalg··on Ask HN: What is your blogging platform of choice in 2018?
Static blog using Jekyll hosted on GitHub Pages
jesalg··on Show HN: Create a personalized and optimized webpack configuration
Nice! Although you might want to update this for Webpack 4.

Like for example, `ModuleConcatenationPlugin` no longer goes in `config.plugins`. It's now a boolean flag `plugins.concatenateModules`

jesalg··on VS Code can do that?
Yeah, this could be a static HTML/CSS site but that's the state of the modern web for better or worse. Markup rendered by a framework like React/Vue and bundled up with Webpack. It's just easier to build that way.
jesalg··on Is vitamin D really a cure-all, and how should we get our fix?
This is interesting, my wife experienced something exactly the opposite. She started taking Vitamin D couple of years ago since she was quite deficient just like you. After a year or so of 5k IU daily, she started experiencing severe eye issues, including daily crust buildup, irritation, redness, and blepharitis.

We tried all sorts of drops and cleaning regimes to no avail. She went for another blood test and learned her Vitamin D levels were through the roof (somewhere around 90+). She immediately stopped the Vitamin D supplements and after a few weeks, all her eye issues were gone!

Goes to show we definitely need some good studies examining long-term Vitamin D intake.

jesalg··on Show HN: Reddit Grid – A better way to browse subreddits that are very visual
Nice execution! I made something like this a long time ago: http://www.ruddl.com/ Although I haven't maintained it in a while. Curious what kind of tech stack you are using?
jesalg··on Ask HN: What tech that's right around the corner are you most excited about?
Apple already has the first mover advantage on this. Will be interesting to see how Google/Android will overcome it especially given they don't entirely control the hardware. They should at the very least add the necessary hardware in the next Pixel phone.
jesalg··on Ask HN: Starting blogging when you're not an expert?
Agree with most of what people have said here. I would just say that for me blogging is a way to document my journey while learning a technical subject. I also found myself referencing a lot of my posts months later to remind myself about how I did something. And lastly, teaching and writing something down is a great way to improve your understanding of a subject. So don't worry and write like nobody is reading!
jesalg··on Open Bazaar – decentralized Bitcoin marketplace
Ran into this same issue. Peeked into the developer tools window. Looks like a bug in:

onboardingModal.js:177 Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'css' of undefined

Had to change line 177 to this so I can move forward:

var oldPos = 0//parseInt(this.accWin.css('left').replace("px", "")),

jesalg··on Ask HN: What do you want to see in Ubuntu 17.10?
FLAVOR: Ubuntu Desktop

1. HEADLINE: More robust backup tool

As a user who recently switched from Win 10 to Ubuntu Desktop, I tried to setup nightly backups of certain folders to my NAS device with Déjà Dup. After installing missing dependencies and tinkering with the settings for a long time, I finally got it working. Once I did, it wasn't reliable at all. I kept getting various different illegible errors.

IMHO having a robust backup software that just works out of the box would make switching to Ubuntu Desktop more easier and compelling for the average user.

2. HEADLINE: Better GUI to manage VPN connections

Right now there is no way to open the network manager and setup a VPN connection like there is on MacOS. I would like to be able to import my .ovpn file and just click connect.

ROLE/AFFILIATION: Engineering Director @ Kadenze (an EdTech Startup)

I must add that I have found solutions to both the above-mentioned issues but they are technical / complex in nature and not something a layperson would be able to setup very easily. Ubuntu Desktop has come a long way but for a desktop OS to be able to go mainstream, things like that just have to work out of the box.

jesalg··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
Upvoted for Mr.Robot's sample resume :D
jesalg··on WordPress on .NET
Several years ago I used to run a WordPress blog on IIS 7 using FastCGI. The performance wasn't great but acceptable for a small blog. Wonder how this compares.
jesalg··on Ask HN: Any unfinished side projects to give away?
WishCan looks pretty awesome. Great job! I built something very similar: http://www.travelizer.io/ - Although it's not as further along as WishCan. Interesting to see so many people attempting to solve the travel planning riddle but it's tough to get it right.
jesalg··on Sophisticated OS X Backdoor Discovered
Well I think the show depicted something like this before it became public knowledge. But point taken, they were inspired by similar exploits.
jesalg··on Sophisticated OS X Backdoor Discovered
This sounds a lot like the zero-day exploit used in the show Mr.Robot. Life imitating art.
jesalg··on Wagon Acquired by Box
I second Metabase recommendation. Like the fact that it's OSS.
jesalg··on Why I'm not a big fan of Scrum
We use a similar approach in my company and the key here is to borrow the parts that work for your organization from Scrum and blend them with a much simpler Kanban approach. Don't follow a methodology blindly just because someone wrote a book about it. Keep evaluating & tweaking the process until you think it's at a point where it's working well for your organization.
jesalg··on Special projects
This reminds me of an excellent two post series by Tim Urban about the upcoming AI revolution: http://waitbutwhy.com/2015/01/artificial-intelligence-revolu...
jesalg··on Rails 5.0: Action Cable, API mode, and more
This has been long awaited:

jesalg··on How to Start Learning Deep Learning
Really enjoyed reading through that 3 part series. Easier to understand for an average programmer. Another one along those lines: https://www.oreilly.com/learning/hello-tensorflow
jesalg··on Toward a URL for every function
Nice, looking forward to it!
jesalg··on Toward a URL for every function
Curious why they decided not to work on adding Ruby support especially when underlying srclib which they use has support for it.
jesalg··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Team Viewer?
Some alternatives:

- RealVNC (free for personal use): https://www.realvnc.com/products/vnc/

- LogMeIn: https://secure.logmein.com/home

jesalg··on Rails 5.0.0.rc1
Personally I find the most effective way to quickly pickup something is by using it in a project. I'd recommend some of these starter projects that you can download and start hacking: http://railsapps.github.io/
jesalg··on Rails 5.0.0.rc1
I'll bite. If you know Ruby, I'd definitely recommend taking the next step and learning Rails. I started with Plain Old Ruby first as well by writing small scripts and then slowly graduated to Sinatra and ultimately Rails. Unless you are using Ruby for DevOps you can almost never go without having to interact with Rails or it's components in some way.
