jeroenvlek··on Tiktoken: OpenAI’s Tokenizer
Huggingface is a lot more than just a tokenizer.
jeroenvlek··on Undetectable very-low frequency sound increases dancing at a live concert
Please don't call Orphx EDM. They make techno and ambient.

Slightly related: Saw them at Labyrinth 2015 in Japan. Amazing performance.

jeroenvlek··on Undetectable very-low frequency sound increases dancing at a live concert
Can confirm that ravers have known this for decades :)
jeroenvlek··on Antibiotic-loaded microalgae treat bacterial pneumonia in mice
No, this was at a less famous institute in Leiden, The Netherlands
jeroenvlek··on Antibiotic-loaded microalgae treat bacterial pneumonia in mice
My mom used to work at an institute for Vitality and Aging and the leading professor there liked to say that "the first person that will reach a 1000 years of age has already been born"
jeroenvlek··on America’s stealth aircraft you've never heard of
Wow, that Bird of Prey plane is gorgeous.
jeroenvlek··on Ask HN: How do you discover music?
I listen to DJ sets on Soundcloud, then I'll try to Shazam any tracks I like (50% chance in my type of music, underground electronic) or ask in the comments for "ID Please?". Then I usually add it to my YouTube playlist [0] (Premium, of course), which gives recommendations, and I try to buy the record on Discogs if available on vinyl, which also has a recommendation engine.

jeroenvlek··on Software component names should be whimsical and cryptic
Everything in software (and life) is a trade-off and should be balanced and rebalanced. Something we just continuously fail to absorb in our true/false programmer brains, since everyone is always looking for those golden laws that always apply.

"Always give cute names", "Always give descriptive names", "FP is always good, OOP is always bad", "Always test first", "Always test later" etc.

Golden laws don't exist: Pick the best solution for your current situation and accept that your current situation will change. (Which is, again, a trade-off between now and the future!)

jeroenvlek··on The Car-Replacement Bicycle (The Bakfiets)
Living in The Hague, The Netherlands, my wife and I decided to indefinitely postpone owning a car for our two young kids (4 and 2) and buy a Gazelle Makki [0] and I must say I absolutely love it so far. My oldest can already ride her bike, but not everywhere, so having a car analogue is very convenient. Long distances we do by train or plane.

jeroenvlek··on Ask HN: Did the Tesla return to work happen?
But even if this is true (and I definitely believe there is merit to f2f interactions), it will come down to the labor market in every respective sector. Software engineers, for example, are in short demand, so if they prefer WFH, they will go to a company that offers that to them. Obviously not every job is appropriate for WFH, [insert YMMV disclaimer here]
jeroenvlek··on Ask HN: Did the Tesla return to work happen?
Agreed, although that is actually my own phrasing, so I'm probably to blame here :)
jeroenvlek··on Ask HN: Did the Tesla return to work happen?
Interestingly I see some startup founders (e.g. Delian from Varda Space) and some SF VC types on Twitter lobbying against WFH, so I wonder how long startups will be different from BigCo's. At the mean time my current client (a large Dutch insurance company) actually promotes WFH and says they will never go above an average office occupancy of 40%, which translates roughly to 2 mandatory office days per week.
jeroenvlek··on The strength of the strong force
So we're on the road to creating "droplets"? (Dark Forest reference)

Offtopic: Can we please bury the phrase "only time will tell" already?

jeroenvlek··on All about QBasic and QuickBasic
Ahhh, my first lines of code were BASIC <3

Btw, slightly related, if you want to do some BASIC from a Scala context, check this out: https://github.com/tpolecat/basic-dsl

jeroenvlek··on Martin Kersten, creator of MonetDB, has died
RIP Martin Kersten. I took his undergraduate course at the University of Amsterdam. MonetDB was his professional baby. Nice guy.
jeroenvlek··on Ask HN: How to keep my daughter busy while tickling her curiosity
You are unemployed, so I cannot judge your financial means, but I keep seeing this pop up in my feeds and it might be cool for you and your daughter to build together: https://www.kiwico.com/
jeroenvlek··on Ceephax Acid Crew
Yes! Also a legend. Saw him live and it was, of course, amazing
jeroenvlek··on Ceephax Acid Crew
I've loved Legowelt since Discoroute. As other people pointed out he's very prolific. His dj sets are a treat too. Check out his SoundCloud!
jeroenvlek··on Ceephax Acid Crew
As an electronic music fan I never thought I'd discover a new artist on HN. Those first two tracks are massive. Thanks for sharing.
jeroenvlek··on Awesome Critique of Crypto/Web3
Interesting, I thought some of his articles were well put together. Do you have a source for that gossip? Would love get both sides of the story.
jeroenvlek··on Arduino Uno Interrupts with Rust
This article details some solutions to programming interrupts in Rust on the Arduino Un
jeroenvlek··on The GIL and its effects on Python multithreading
You filled in a lot of gaps in my GIL knowledge. Today I learned something new. Thank you for writing it!
jeroenvlek··on Do nothing (2020)
That sounds a lot like Rubber Duck Debugging [0]. I do it all the time and in my first full-time job, my colleagues gave me an actual rubber duck. [0] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubber_duck_debugging
jeroenvlek··on Beads: Computer language and toolchain
This seems like the brain child of one ambitious smart person that still needs to receive feedback from the outside world.
jeroenvlek··on Polyglots Are All You Need
For sure those are relevant filters, but as a first pass filter consider if someone is proficient in more than one language, especially for more senior positions.
jeroenvlek··on Polyglots Are All You Need
It can be difficult to plan your next development step, or know who to hire. How do you build and recognize the good from the mediocre experience? Consider polyglots: People that can program in multiple languages.
jeroenvlek··on Thank You for 20 Years of Discogs
I <3 Discogs. Such a great site. The Marketplace is a drain on my wallet, but hey, everybody needs a hobby :)
jeroenvlek··on PySpark Style Guide
Was also rolling my eyes at that one. Furthermore, if you are this concerned with the refactoring limitations of your IDE, then don't use Python, but the Scala or Java API instead.
