jeremyis··on Crown shyness
Yes. There are 23+k restaurants, how many of those are "fine-dining"? Put another way, you could go to a different Michelin starred restaurant every week in NYC and still not go through the list...

Also, not all Michelin restaurants are that good... (In NYC, I think they are because it is so competitive but I've been disappointed in SF and Hong Kong for instance).

So FYI - just because a restaurant has a Michelin star, it doesn't mean it is always packed nor good.

jeremyis··on Crown shyness
A restaurant with a Michelin star is a fairly common experience in NYC.
jeremyis··on Crown shyness
My favorite restaurant is called [Crown Shy](https://www.crownshy.nyc/) after this very thing. Enjoy but please try to keep what little secret is left by not spreading the good word too widely.
jeremyis··on Launch HN: Play.ht (YC W23) – Generate and clone voices from 20 seconds of audio
Hi! Congrats on launching!

We recently evaluated play.ht for TTS but decided against it because you had an async API which was harder to implement. Alternatives have sync APIs (including Google Cloud). Do you have plans to release a sync client for standard TTS?

jeremyis··on Show HN: Watermelon – GPT-powered code contextualizer
This looks neat! So it's like super-charged intellisense for something in your code? https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35251029

Looks helpful! What else is on the roadmap?

jeremyis··on Chronophoto
3244! The first photo was hard because it was recent but had an old car in it.
jeremyis··on Show HN: MarqLink – take screenshots, add annotations, organize, and share
Interesting. Do you know if anything like this has been built internally at tech cos?
jeremyis··on Show HN: MarqLink – take screenshots, add annotations, organize, and share
This is cool. I find myself also often taking screenshots and sharing as a convenient source of info.

I also feel like when I share the screenshot - via slack, the million messaging clients my various friends / colleagues use, etc. - the context and convo is often lost.

I see the value here in unifying that data in one place - instead of the screenshot, I can just share a link and then go and find all the screenshots somewhere. I like that. Actually, now that I think about it, if you set the `og tags`[1], chat apps should also make an image preview when you paste a link (maybe you are already doing this - I didn't check) so it's a similar effect as what we do today but with the added benefits of cataloging / commenting / finding.

Congrats on launching. Who do you envision as the primary users and first niche use cases?

jeremyis··on Improving MIT’s written commitment to freedom of expression
Uhm what was the 001 porn?
jeremyis··on Show HN: A better way to timeblock your day
Can’t you accomplish this by just making calendar events? What am I missing?
jeremyis··on A Safer San Francisco
For many of us who moved from SF->Miami, politics had nothing to do with it. I’ve been in Miami over a year and I LOVE it. Come check it out :-)

Ps - I coorganize a software engineer meetup here. We’ve got good representation!

jeremyis··on A viable solution for Python concurrency
Way to go Sam! Mark my words: our generations' Carmack!
jeremyis··on A viable solution for Python concurrency
+1 ! Though, not a very good Oculus player (yet)!
jeremyis··on Understanding how Facebook disappeared from the internet
My friends said they couldn't play Oculus
jeremyis··on Ask HN: How do you do estimates in 2021?
My team landed on a process of breaking projects down into milestones and then tasks and being consistent with buffers for both internal and external parties.

As a side project, I actually built a tool to help with this: "Calculeeto" (http://calculeeto.herokuapp.com/). Besides walking you through the process of breaking down your project and adding buffer, it also has features to assign dependencies and generate a schedule based on number of teammates -- it even adds time for communication overhead: http://calculeeto.herokuapp.com/?debug4

I never launched or finished it but it seemed useful.

jeremyis··on Apple's Power Move to Kneecap Facebook Advertising Is Working
This doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. Google also makes a lot off their apps and circumvents the App Store. Airbnb too. Apple is doing what it thinks is best for its customers. Perhaps people will pick iPhones over Android due to Apples strength with privacy.
jeremyis··on FB users buying Oculus VR headsets to get customer service prioritization
This recall is only for the foam face insert. It's removable and probably very inexpensive to make / replace. Oculus is sending free replacements to folks.

I am an avid Quest 2 user since ~October. I play Population:one and _love_ it. It's a team-based Battle Royale. I am just blown away by how much fun and social it is. It's been a godsend during the pandemic.

The Quest 2 is only $300 - I strongly recommend it!

jeremyis··on B-tree Path Hints
I really enjoyed this post and hope I get more like it in the future:

- It gave a high level, concise background overview of the base concept (B-trees) complete with diagrams

- It talked from first principles about how things worked without really any Jargon

- It explained simply a clever optimization

Thanks for posting!

jeremyis··on Launch HN: MergeQueue (YC S21) – Automate rebasing and merging for your codebase
A previous employer that underwent a massive multi-billon dollar migration to SOA (and then folks went too far and made everything a micro-service so had to rollup some work) basically because merging became too slow into our monorail as we got to ~O(1k) engineers. We had an in-house solution like this that we used for 2-3 years (and a worse version for years before that). What a great idea to productive it!

IMO the SOA migration simply due to merging was such a heavy-handed solution. If we could have made our MergeQueue way better, perhaps we could have avoided that multi-billion dollar (+ the rollback work) fiasco.

Congrats!

jeremyis··on MIT suspending SAT/ACT requirement for next application cycle
IMO high scores were a necessary but not sufficient condition. It was definitely a data point used
jeremyis··on Show HN: Superadmin – No Code Visual Testing Made Easy
Cool. How does creation of a test work? Through DOM element inspection or screenshot comparison?
jeremyis··on Show HN: Superadmin – No Code Visual Testing Made Easy
Oh wow super interesting - At my last job we had really poor testing and something to visually monitor for breakages would have been perfect. Does this do a screenshot diff between builds? Does it run on CI or periodically?

jeremyis··on Launch HN: Superpowered (YC W21) – Calendar in your menu bar
Exactly - calendar notifications are "more important" than my frequent Clubhouse pings and having them in a more visible place is very helpful.
jeremyis··on Launch HN: Superpowered (YC W21) – Calendar in your menu bar
I don’t think so because the notifications in chrome get buried for me. Email alerts for lost in the deluge of work emails. The Apple Watch helps a lot actually
jeremyis··on Launch HN: Superpowered (YC W21) – Calendar in your menu bar
> Can someone give me an example of this problem? To me this feels so "extra"... Maybe I'm missing something.

The business value of missing a notification or meeting can be really high. I feel like businesses would happily pay $10 per user-month to have all their employees on time to a meeting. Or even just closer. I imagine similar logic can be applied to other notifications.

jeremyis··on Launch HN: Superpowered (YC W21) – Calendar in your menu bar
I tried Superpowered and liked it! Congrats on building a cool product! I see the value in having calendar alerts on your menu bar. I am real bad at remembering meetings and find the default alerts to be annoying or forgettable - I recently got an Apple Watch that has helped a lot with this though. I was a little surprised there was no free version with premium features - in my mind, the main benefit of alerts in my menu bar isn’t enough to pay. I may not be the right user (maybe businesses?). Could you share thoughts around the pricing? Are there other features I may be missing?
jeremyis··on Launch HN: Runops (YC W21) – A better cloud shell for production apps
I haven't personally been on an infra team but I've seen Infra / Dev tools teams being overwhelmed with requests. This seems like a really helpful and elegant solution!
