jeorb··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
I'm a long time Kagi user and I haven't used Google search in about a year.

I tried out Google search for a few technical searches recently and it was surprisingly ad and AI free. Not bad at all and much better than I remember from last year.

Then I put in some non-technical searches and it was all ads and AI and basically unusable.

jeorb··on One year of Roto, a compiled scripting language for Rust
Are there any comparisons to other Rust scripting languages like Rhai and Rune?
jeorb··on Search engines alternatives now that Google isn't Google anymore
I hope it stays small compared to the tech giants.

I want Kagi to have enough customers to run a business and earn a profit but not so many that they need to make the product worse to continue growing.

The customizability of Kagi is what really makes it shine.

You can ban Pinterest links, boost Mozdev, ban listicles, boost whatever.

Kagi gets very good very fast as you customize it and it's easy to keep it updated as sites go up or down in quality.

The community shared boost and ban lists are a great resource too. Making it easy to see and copy what others find useful.

jeorb··on Zed Editor Theme-Builder
It's not just you and it's not just Zed. Dark themes tend to be low contrast gray on gray.

I usually look for a dark theme that looks good and then make a custom version with darker the background colors and brighter the foreground colors.

Maybe it's time for to start publishing high contrast dark themes instead of just fixing it for myself.

jeorb··on In Europe, wind and solar overtake fossil fuels
The quotes for solar on my home in the US ranged between $40,000 (local company) and $120,000 (Tesla). How did you get solar installed for only $13,000?
jeorb··on I switched from VSCode to Zed
Zed is great and close to being my favorite text editor over Vim but there are constant rough edges.

I spent a fair bit of time this weekend tracking down bugs in a project caused by format on save in Zed occasionally deleting the first line of Python classes.

I turned off format on save and life is good now but data loss bugs like that are pretty annoying in a text editor.
