jenkstom··on An Enterprise DevOps Primer
Wow. The assumptions in this article are deeply misguided. "Modern" doesn't equate to "better" at all. It's dismissive bordering on insulting to the actual people and technology that make our digital world actually work.

This is representative of the "Cargo Cult IT" I see so often these days. IT is so complex that so many people don't even try to understand it - they just read an article on how amazing something is and implement it everywhere. Right or wrong.

IT, like everything else, has to be effective. And to make it work on purpose, somebody has to understand it at a fairly low level. I don't see much of that anymore, even in some cases with the greybeards (yes, I have plenty of grey in my beard).

I guess what I'm trying to say is that this article is all about "what" to do, but it's obvious that the why of things wasn't considered much if at all. Or, to put it another way, it's all about efficiency instead of effectiveness.

jenkstom··on It's weird that people get mocked for changing their minds
Not when you believe that the absolute standard for truth was written thousands of years ago and never has and never will change. Forget historical truth, we already know that's absurd, but plenty of people think that way.
jenkstom··on DeepMind cofounder warns govts must find solutions for jobs lost to A.I
Or maybe the government should just pass a law requiring AI companies to create those jobs... That would be entertaining.
jenkstom··on Ask HN: Resources for older developers?
As a resident graybeard in my 50's, I have to say I really dislike working with rude and dismissive kids.
jenkstom··on Supreme Court seems ready to reject student loan forgiveness
You know that's a lie, don't you?
jenkstom··on Supreme Court seems ready to reject student loan forgiveness
You entirely missed the key point of the original statement. These are not normal loans. You can't get rid of them in bankruptcy. The collectors use predatory (and somewhat terrifying) collection techniques. Stop comparing these to consumer anything, they aren't even remotely like that.
jenkstom··on Supreme Court seems ready to reject student loan forgiveness
Cool... can we get that "too big to fail" bank bailout back then?
jenkstom··on Today's 5-year-olds will likely live to 100
Nah. 1,000. That's what I tell my 11 year olds.
jenkstom··on The US Supreme Court doesn’t understand the internet
I'm done with wired magazine. They no longer produce content, they produce drama. That article about how there's no point in identifying evil people because there's no evidence supporting it was massively harmful to people in abusive relationships who are trying to sort out why they are suffering so much and what evil really is. From the comments below this one apparently is clickbait. I'm done.
jenkstom··on Five mildly anti-Buddhist essays
Might as well make the same criticisms of dentistry... I'm not sure what you're talking about, but it isn't Buddhism.
jenkstom··on Why has no one published a computer version of Squad Leader?
This article is paywalled and there is no way to read it without paying.
jenkstom··on Ask HN: Is software becoming less efficient?
Throwing out paradigms because they are complex (but flexible) in favor of paradigms that are simplistic and easier to understand. A good example is Object Relational Models.
jenkstom··on Tell HN: Your Android carrier can remotely turn settings on
That's really not at all fair, the NWS has put a lot of effort since the Joplin tornado into localizing warnings as much as possible to the affected area. They may geolocate the warning based on the tower rather than the phone, but that's still a long way away from "across the state". And you maybe should look into it, but flash floods have nothing to do with bodies of water. You could be 1k feet above a lake on the side of a mountain, but that mudslide caused by torrential rain might be a problem for you.
jenkstom··on Ask HN: “Contact Us” Pricing
That's what credit reporting agencies like Dun and Bradstreet are for.
jenkstom··on Ask HN: Why are customer support processes so awful?
Because businesses, along with society in general (especially US society), is very bad at making evidence-based decisions. That extends to changing policies and procedures according to evidence of what works well and what doesn't. In fact, in some places (the US again comes to mind, which is where I live) it goes in the opposite direction of effective and evidence-based. I think it's because of psychopaths - which I define as someone living in a fantasy world who wants to control and hurt others.
jenkstom··on Ask HN: Devs with ADHD do you use specialized tooling?
Obsidian has been a life-changer for me. I finally learned that I needed a certain amount of chaos in my organization, and Obsidian lets me rearrange things any time I want.
jenkstom··on Kanye West is buying Parler
Because of Britney Spears this has become a lot harder to do in the past year or two.
jenkstom··on Ask HN: Can you recommend me a fast, light text editor for Windows?
If we're looking at obscure, then I think cudatext https://cudatext.github.io/ deserves a mention.
jenkstom··on NPR and the Flap (2015)
I've noticed this with native Californians.
jenkstom··on Exponential Smoothing: faster and more accurate than NeuralProphet
This makes me reconsider my opposition to a death penalty.
jenkstom··on Ask HN: How to get a company to remove my email from an account
Very, very rarely does that email address exist.
jenkstom··on Medicare Could Have Saved $3.6B on Generic Drugs
I'd like to point out that sometimes a "regular" generic is not an option. For instance, anyone who has a sensitivity to one of the non-active ingredients in a medication is going to jump through a lot of hoops to find medication they can take - including decreased outcomes because of "noncompliance". It is very hard to get approval for compounded medication either through private insurance or through medicare or medicaid. I'm thinking specifically of microcrystalline cellulose, but there are other problematic fillers used in medication.
jenkstom··on All software is web software now
For those of us maintaining any of the billions of lines of legacy code that runs the majority of IT... nope. A lot of use cases can be covered by the web ecosystem, but a lot can't as well.

This seems to be a common fantasy or fallacy of developers under a certain age (I too far from that age to guess). I suspect because of the amount of dedication required to keep up with front-end technologies.

The reason it's so complex is because it's a bad fit. Soon enough everything will be WASM and we'll be right back where we were in the 90's with the "thin client" vs "thick client" debate.

The good part of it is that there ARE some problems being solved. WASM is a good start on trusted computing, and that's not going to go away ever. Unless that other fantasy of my generation (X-Gen) comes true - post-apocalyptic societal collapse. Not sure that could be called a "fantasy", maybe "collective nightmare" is a better term for it.

jenkstom··on Executive narcissism affects knowledge transfer among business units
I can't read the actual article, but the summary implies a distinct lack of understanding of a Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The issue is more that the NPD lives in a fantasy world and compulsively must "prove" that they are better than everyone, or more specifically the compulsively try to break others down. It's completely about power and the ability to trigger negative and traumatizing emotions in others.
jenkstom··on Ask HN: What are modern architecture patterns for desktop applications?
As an old timer it's pretty hard to take this post seriously. I honestly can't tell if it's a troll or not. I'm not trying to offend, more to point out that there are some big generational gaps in software development.
jenkstom··on Many software companies are a joke
An excellent illustration of the difference between a professional and an employee.
jenkstom··on Many software companies are a joke
I believe (s/t)he(y) means in the sense of risk management. A lot of things are done to ensure that certain risks are minimized.
jenkstom··on The End of Progressive Intellectual Life
Pretty much every criticism leveled at the left has a far worse corollary that could be directed to the right. The closing of ranks on the left is simply a reaction to the regimented authoritarianism of the right. Sure, some questions are really hard to ask on the left. But in general you can. On the right you have to live in a fantasy world to fit in and it seems like virtue signalling is a contest to see who can sound the most insane.
jenkstom··on The Accord in Perfumery
Just so you know, a significant portion of the population who are sensitive to fragrances experience a great deal of suffering due to perfumers and chemists. Did you know that chemicals like propane are classified as a scent?

The scent industry has funded an information warfare campaign against these sufferers to paint them as psychologically imbalanced. Even though empirical evidence shows that it isn't psychological the mechanism is not understood. No, I'm not making it up, even though I can't imagine how somebody would do such a thing.

jenkstom··on People who press on cookie banners anything except “agree” – why do you do that?
I mostly only see these in websites found in a feed, like the Google Now feed on my android phone. If it's annoying enough I just block the website. If I can't trust them to track me then I don't really need to read whatever they are writing.
