jen20··on Singapore govt dating app uses Gale-Shapley stable marriage algorithm
Define “quite a lot” here?
jen20··on macOS 27: ifconfig command no longer prints hardware MAC address
Update: I think it's about code signature and how the API responds - which also corresponds to root and system binaries not seeing the issue.
jen20··on macOS 27: ifconfig command no longer prints hardware MAC address
Interestingly I can also reproduce it with Bash 5.3.15 from nix-darwin.

I wonder if this is about notarization or something.

jen20··on macOS Golden Gate Is a Buggy Mess
My experience of 27 is that's basically what it is over 26. I've had zero noticeable problems since developer beta 1.
jen20··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
I haven't validated your statistic (and it's unclear what "in the long run means" since this is a point-in-time thing), but assuming it's true, how do you determine it is causation and not correlation?
jen20··on LA Metro has some of the slowest escalators on Earth
They were running much faster than the “west” in 2015-2020 too, so I doubt that is the reason.
jen20··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
> we would expect changes in e.g. mortgage interest costs to be passed on to

This absolutely happens in the UK where variable interest rates affect more people.

> When landlords' costs drop, do they drop the rent in response?

The price of everything is pretty much a ratchet. They never go down again absent some kind of competitive pressure.

jen20··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
Connecticut has more expensive gas than either New York or New Jersey too!

> From a design and manufacturing point of view you want everything to be identical.

OK, so why not ship a SIM card slot in the US? eSIMs work perfectly well in Europe, the US and most of the rest of the world, "region locking" is clearly not the answer.

Apple did not have "lightning everywhere" either - Macs and iPads got it much earlier.

OK so why ship it in the US? The phones sold in the EU vs US already differ with respect to SIM card slots.

jen20··on I don't like passkeys
In the Apple ecosystem this is trivial - you select to sign in using a QR code which you scan with a device you do own. It works perfectly in my experience (of using them wherever possible for several years)
jen20··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
I understand why you’d like to believe that, but it’s simply not true.
jen20··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
There were a few categories of reasons.

The ones that are persistent are "I'm going to vote for anarchy because politics does no good for me", "I'm racist and don't understand that this doesn't get rid of people I really want to get rid of but really want it to so whatever" and "I'm xenophobic and haven't accepted that there isn't a British Empire anymore".

There may be fringe cases around specific regulations, but those were the main three. People were voting for whatever they wanted Brexit to be, most of which is pure fantasy, not what it actually is, which is a clusterfuck of badness, and zero benefit to anyone.

I say this as someone _who was a member of the Conservative Party at the time_, though the fact that the candidate in my constituency since 2010 was Jacob Rees Mogg meant I have voted against them in every election since then.

> but there were at least 17 million crazies at the time

Yes. Just the demographics has substantially thinned their numbers by now though.

> would likely be a different 17 million crazies voting No again.

Highly unlikely - and turnout on the other side would be dramatically improved. Had the vote been held again the following day, it's likely that the result would have been different. If it were held today, it would be a landslide towards rejoining with the original terms.

People actually know what they're voting for, instead of falling for make-believe horseshit about how much money could go into the NHS (but didn't) on the side of a bus, with a heavy dose of Russian propaganda on Facebook.

jen20··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
That is a rather fantastical and revisionist version of why the Brexit referendum was called - which had more to do with a misguided attempt to put the crazy wing of the Conservative Party to bed rather than anything to do with the EU, where the UK had the best deal imaginable already.
jen20··on America's Driver's License Breach Is a National Security Disaster
Sarbanes-Oxley in the US holds top management personally responsible too, and compliance is taken far more seriously than with other regulations as a result.
jen20··on America's Driver's License Breach Is a National Security Disaster
No, but it changes the cost-benefit analysis for managers deciding to cut corners in future.
jen20··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
I concur with gekoxyz - I've been using the iOS and macOS 27 developer betas since about beta 3 on my personal devices, and had actually forgotten to a large extent that I was running beta software. It's been excellent - a marked difference to the 26 releases.
jen20··on Drawably: Hand-Drawn UI Controls
This seems to be somewhat useful (similar to Balsamiq Mockups back in the day) for communicating "this is a work in progress, and not the final thing" to people (usually the non-technical) who see a polished UI as indicative that an entire system is finished.
jen20··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
> We're going to have to get saavy in pulling apart the distinction between

We probably shouldn't: doing any of this horseshit is a good reason to return a product. We should start doing that en mass until they get the idea.

jen20··on Rust is tier-1 language at Microsoft
I just tried it. It works fine.
jen20··on Rust is tier-1 language at Microsoft
If you really want to see what is doing what, you should install Little Snitch and Little Flocker. Many apps (from exactly the people you'd expect) are doing absolutely unhinged nonsense that no-one should put up with.
jen20··on Google avoids a breakup of its ad tech business
Indeed, it would be a good idea for iOS to have a mode for the elderly that is almost exactly like that (similar to child mode, and for similar reasons).
jen20··on Google avoids a breakup of its ad tech business
Good for her - MANY people fall for these scams, however.

What about "is incompetent enough to press the buttons when the nice man from Microsoft calls about the viruses on her USB"?

jen20··on It takes 5 cloud services to hear my doorbell
Personal data going to companies in the country one resides in is also not a good thing.
jen20··on It takes 5 cloud services to hear my doorbell
Why does it matter that it’s a Korean company?
jen20··on Brits would quite like their private messages to stay private
It’s not supposed to. There is no light that can present anybody who voted for Brexit as anything other than a fuckwit.
jen20··on Brits would quite like their private messages to stay private
Absurd to suggest that anyone voting for Brexit knew what they were voting for - by design of the pro-Brexit shysters.
