jeggers5··on The Serenity of a 5pm Bedtime
I'm uncertain of why anybody would do this to their life.

You lay out some advantages:

1) The rest of the internet is "asleep", there's not much content being generated and so you are less distracted.

2) You get the gym to yourself.

3) No alarm clock

Admittedly, all three are good things. But, I'm uncertain if it's a good trade off. I mean, I'd go crazy if I did what you do on a daily basis. For one, going to sleep at 5pm would completely cut me off from any after-work/school social aspect of my life. It just seems silly to do that just for the ability to make it easier for yourself to work at night. I for one, find it much better to just not mess around on HN/Facebook all day and just do what I have to do (use SelfControl). Just do it. My gym is very empty early, at about 8am, infact thinging about it now, your sleep timetable doesn't help you have an empty gym. Most people get up that early anyway for work.

I just don't get why you need to change your sleeping habits to something so backward that cuts you off from so many of the social aspects of life that aren't mingled in with work/school.

Not having to use an alarm clock, though, is good.

jeggers5··on Marissa Mayer Rolls Out a New Yahoo.com
The different shades of purple are quite annoying between the logo and the lighter purple used elsewhere.

Also, surely they could've made it more coherent and made the actual search results page have the same design as the new home page?

jeggers5··on Dark matter scaffolding of universe detected for the first time
It would be amazing if somebody could answer this too. If I turn a lamp on and off in a sealed room of mirrors, why doesn't the light just keep bouncing off the walls and illuminate the room?

jeggers5··on Facebook now informs the sender if you've read their message
Is this only for group messages?
jeggers5··on Anonymous plans to take down the 13 root DNS servers that power the Internet?
Why do people always take these so seriously?

It's far more likely that a bored teenager somewhere wrote this.

Also, if we were to assume that Anonymous does actually exist in some semblance, they would never ship a notice like this with gramatical errors. They're small, but obvious.

I'll eat my foot if they actually manage to make a noticeable affect on the DNS servers anyway.

jeggers5··on Lean Domain Search Passes 50K Searches One Month After Its HackerNews Launch
Really Awesome!

You need to not offer GoDaddy as the only suggested domain registrar, they're evil after all.

jeggers5··on We are sorry
"We made a mistake. Over the last couple of days users brought to light an issue concerning how we handle your personal information on Path, specifically the transmission and storage of your phone contacts."

Dave explained the issue well enough in the first paragraph.

jeggers5··on The ethics of brain boosting
Yes, but because it's such a weird/new piece of technology, I think an explanation of how well it actually works would be a good compliment to the article, there's no point in talking about ethics if it doesn't actually work.
jeggers5··on The ethics of brain boosting
You can't, yet.
jeggers5··on The ethics of brain boosting
Wish they showed something more statistical. As in, by how much did people's memory skills really improve?

That whole article doesn't really even explain how it works either, just some dabbling around "ethics" (really?). Just seems quite vague and unfocussed.

Really exciting prospect if it works though!

jeggers5··on Apology to 37signals
PG would obviously need to clarify; but I assume he clears out the accounts with just a few comments that have almost never been logged-in to.

The only way to try and stop it is to prevent people being able to create a new a/c from an ip address they were using to login with on their proper account. (and maybe penalize them for trying).

That's probably a fruitless effort though with proxies et al.

jeggers5··on Voyager 1 Speeds Toward The Brink Of Interstellar Space
It's actually quite simple.

When you throw a ball, it only slows down because of friction with the air surrounding it or because it hits something.

When you give an object force, it will just keep going because there is no opposing force to diminish the force you gave it in the first place.

Hope that makes some semblance of sense!

jeggers5··on Show HN: VisitHere: One Tweet, One Place.
Be careful, pretty sure this is against Twitter's ToC.
jeggers5··on RFC: Blanking all Wikipedia as SOPA protest
At the moment - just by doing a find 'support'/'oppose'; there are 161 'support's and 62 'opposes'
jeggers5··on RFC: Blanking all Wikipedia as SOPA protest
To be honest, I really can't see Google doing that.

In a much more likely situation, they would put some kind of banner on Google.com expressing their distaste for SOPA. The same for other big companies like Facebook. I thought what Tumblr did was cool, they managed to get many people calling their local reps.

Also, I think we're concentrating too much on the big companies (not that it's really a bad thing). The little ones matter, too. Marshaling them would be somewhat easier due to their lack of hierarchical politics to make every decision.

Although you do have the problem of the multitude of people who just access the internet via Facebook's walled garden. They also have no idea what SOPA is/means.

So, if we can get the giants of the internet to do something - that's fantastic, but we need to get the smaller blogs/websites on board too.

jeggers5··on "Invisible Electrostatic Wall" at 3M adhesive tape plant (1996)
This happens because of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coulomb%27s_law.

Mythbusters should definitely try this!

jeggers5··on Facebook claims it does not track users, but files patent to do same
or, a different browser on a proxy :P
jeggers5··on I've Noticed a Major Flaw with Viral Coming Soon Pages
Totally agree with you.

To be honest, Launchrock are just being ridiculous at this stage. They actually seem to be going backwards. I signed up for their beta over a year ago, still nothing except several "coming soon emails".

jeggers5··on Comcast cuts off customer for going over 250GB of legitimate use
Oh come on. You're completely abusing Comcast's Service and now you're telling some sympathetic story about how it's unfair. 250GB/month is massive, and you knew full well that you were on your last chance, and it's not surprising that they measure upload data as bandwidth (what on earth did you expect?).

If you were going to be using the service like that, you should've asked first. Don't try and tell us you 'forgot' that you had a server down stairs moving gigabytes of data around. I wouldn't want you as a customer either.

jeggers5··on Why can't Facebook sue Google when most of UI ideas in G+ seems to be copied?
As @ig1 said, Facebook don't own ideas. (unless they patent them).

They do have a very (very) specific patent on the News Feed if I remember correctly. Google does seem to have the same implementation as Facebook. I haven't heard anything about it though so I assume it's not an issue.

jeggers5··on Do Robots Take People's Jobs?
Yes. But they create new jobs too. Who has to fix the robots?

You see in Tesco, those new (well not anymore) self checkouts, there's 4 checkers jobs gone. I doubt Tesco actually fired them though. You get my point :)

jeggers5··on Ask HN: How much stock do you place in the Design of a site?
+1, Interesting, thanks.
jeggers5··on Ask HN: Why isn't there a 'Number of Users Online' feature on HN?
Many. You could for instance use it to post a submission when lots of people are online.

Suppose that would just create a huge influx of new submissions though now I think about it.

jeggers5··on Rudimentary GooglePlus API
That's fantastic, well done.

Is there potential for Google to block me for too many requests? I somehow doubt they'd block me unless I was hitting the servers with massive load.

This G+ engineer mentioned an official API is in the Pipes:http://anyasq.com/79-im-a-technical-lead-on-the-google+-team

jeggers5··on How does Google know what other accounts might be yours?
Google is basically a massive brain - the know everything about the internet.

I'm sure they have lot's of methods of figuring out who's who on the Internet. They know a huge amount about you (well they try to anyway).

Besides, they've got my LinkedIn A/c, Facebook A/c, Twitter A/c all linked to my G+ Profile now because I told them.

jeggers5··on Treating Students as Gifted Yields Impressive Academic Results, Study Finds
Weird. Guess it's completely dependent on the person's personality then.
jeggers5··on Treating Students as Gifted Yields Impressive Academic Results, Study Finds
I observed something similar with dyslexia. A friend of mine is dyslexic. However he was only told that he was dyslexic a few months ago. Before he was told, he could read fine, and was quite good maths. Almost immediately after he was diagnosed, he started stumbling over words, and skipping sentences; he also dropped down to the 2nd last maths class from the 2 highest.

It's v. unscientific I know but it's an interesting observation all the same.

jeggers5··on Ask HN: Best way to accept payments online?
Thanks for the Tip :-) will likely go with @stripe then :)
jeggers5··on Ask HN: Best way to accept payments online?
Ah ok. I that case I'll try them first :)
