jeffnv··on AirPods Max
I think the comparison is far more drastic than that. I would compare $100 headphones (like your Sonys) to amplifier speaker set up of at least $2000. That depth of bass response and accuracy is quite an achievement for speakers.

I say this as someone with both Sony MDRV6 headphones and a home borderline audiophile stereo setup retailing for over $3k.

jeffnv··on How Normal Am I?
It didn't compliment my face!
jeffnv··on Is a Turtle an Animal or a Fish?
Are fish not animals? Thanks a lot American Public School System.
jeffnv··on I thought I would have accomplished a lot more today and also before I was 35

jeffnv··on Ask HN: How to Become a Music Buff?
I definitely consider myself a music buff. Here's my suggestion: start with what you love and explore the graph from there.

Consider an album a node in the great graph of music. The links to other nodes are plentiful and will likely lead to other things you love. Explore other artists on the same label, other groups composed of members of the group, other albums recorded in the same studio, etc.

Don't just listen to the music but get interested in the context, just like any work of art, the significance is often relative to the context in which it was created. Learn about the history of the members, read reviews, etc.

Learn an instrument, you don't have to be good, but a little knowledge of how to play some of your favorite music can really help to understand the craft.

Find some of those '500 best albums of all time' type lists and do my graph exploration for the ones that resonate with you. It's fine to not like everything but awareness of the really impactful landmark albums will help you understand the evolution of music. It can be interesting to learn about what an album is a _rejection_ of as much as it is a homage to.

tldr - bread first explore from what you already like

jeffnv··on The War on Drugs Is Far More Immoral Than Most Drug Use (2013)
The New Jim Crow is a great book if you want to learn more.
jeffnv··on Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner on their 70-year friendship
Does that make Deadpool the spiritual successor?
jeffnv··on Ask HN: True Apartment Costs in SF?
I pay $2800 for a lovely 1br in SF, but the bus ride in door to door is always over 45 minutes. If you have the option to work from home a couple days a week or love bicycling, it's fine.
jeffnv··on Four-in-one pill prevents third of heart problems: study
Guess what: fit people die too. Every day. As an athletic clean eater with heart problems, ignorant comments like this raise my BP even higher. All bodies have issues. We're complicated. You'll develop your own set of troubles at some point. When you do I'm sure you'll cherish the advice of ignorant strangers on the internet suggesting you just exercise, eat healthier, drink more water, etc as though that will literally prevent all health issues.
jeffnv··on Mac DeMarco on Anxiety, Alcoholism and the Mitski controversy
I liked it.
jeffnv··on Live Share now included in Visual Studio 2019, available for VS Code
I LOVE Live Share! We use it extensively at App Academy to allow people from all over the world to pair on projects! It's so great! Would love to have a conversation with you about all those things you are keen on learning!
jeffnv··on Show HN: App Academy Open – Free Online Coding Bootcamp
I think one of the main values and unique components is that this is a curated and cohesive program. A new learner never knows what they need to know to learn the next topic and any random resource is likely to be a mix of confusing and tediously boring because the author has their own opinions on what the student should and should not yet know. This entire course is put together by the same group of people, so if you are following it linearly, you are being taught exactly what you need to know to move forward. You don't have to explore the graph of knowledge hoping to learn enough on your own.

Incredibly selfish opinion. If you want more money for yourself, become a better asset to an employer and learn to negotiate. You don't move up by holding down the rest of the world.
jeffnv··on Ask HN: What keeps you going?
After being in the industry for around 10 years, my view has now expanded beyond just the projects im working on and into what I am contributing to the company. I am less motivated by 'programming' and more motivated by how it affects the business goals which in turn affects my livelihood and that of my colleagues.
jeffnv··on [dead]
This article is pretty pointless. Glad you didn't have a heart attack, though, buddy.

jeffnv··on Volkswagen overtakes Toyota as the world's biggest carmaker
I guess the whole 'cheating on the emissions tests' scandal didn't hurt them too bad. Here I thought it would destroy them. Silly me!
jeffnv··on Magnitude 6.5 earthquake hits off Northern California coast
How much danger is there really? The risk of being injured during an earthquake in the modern era is pretty low, all things considered.
jeffnv··on Married to someone with anxiety
Easy to say for someone that doesn't rely on beta blockers. Take it from someone that does: 'beta blockers me' is the one I want to be forever.

Mindfulness in Plain English by Bhante Gunaratana
jeffnv··on Ask HN: What new skills are you learning?
