jeffjose··on LendingClub Loan Buyers Retreat After Shakeup; U.S. Probes
Can you cite that claim of Google has a stake/partnership with LendingClub?
jeffjose··on Introducing WhatsApp's Desktop App
No linux version. I was almost convinced that this was going to be another Electron app (after slack went that route)
jeffjose··on The Sad History of the Microsoft Posix Subsystem (2010)
This is not outsourcing. I'm an Indian and I know for a fact that Microsoft India employs the very best talent. Yes, there are cost benefits for having engineering done in India, but for companies such as Microsoft there shouldnt be a quality difference. However where you'd see quality difference is if you try to build an app for $50 with a company you found on a job website. Those employ regular run-of-the-mill, copy-paste-from-stackoverflow developers.
jeffjose··on Google.com partially dangerous
Google is entitled to their opinion. Its upto users to see whether they want to consume that opinion or not.
jeffjose··on “Make HTML Great Again”: Campaign site teardowns
So using Wordpress gets 2 thumbs down?
jeffjose··on Arxiv Sanity Preserver
Looks like the site is down.
jeffjose··on LIGO Gravitational Wave Data in iPython Jupyter Notebooks
As a python fanboy this makes me really happy. Great job, folks at PSF and Jupyter
jeffjose··on Petitioning Facebook: Don't Shut Down Parse.com
This makes me sad. I understand where people are coming from, but at this point people should realize that you cant build business on someone else's free products. Its for a reason that big companies pay money to get, sometimes even open source software (Red Hat) or get certified machines (from Dell/HP).

Building a business/livelihood is very different from experimenting. Experiment all you want with free products, but if you're gonna do the former be very sure of what the risks are.

jeffjose··on How I fixed a bug in Atom
Ofcourse it was regex. Regular Expressions: Now You Have Two Problems

Good job!

jeffjose··on Viewer.js – JavaScript image viewer
Its there, all the way at the top right.
jeffjose··on VMware Confirms Layoffs as It Prepares for Dell Acquisition
What departments/roles are these targeted at? Are they more support roles - HR/Training/IT or are they more engineering/products - engineers, PMs etc?
jeffjose··on Apple Reports Record First Quarter Results, Slowing Growth in iPhone Sales
This. Its the growth trend that's flattening, which should be worrisome to investors if you ask me.
jeffjose··on How Microsoft Plans to Beat Google and Facebook to the Next Tech Breakthrough
If anything, the race to attract top minds has actually forced these companies to open source their proprietary libraries. (TensorFlow, CNTK etc). While they might not be working together, there's definitely a greater good that has happened as a side-effect. I'd argue that the open sourcing of libraries is better than 2 big companies working secretly.
jeffjose··on Colorizing black and white photos with deep learning
This could become, but I believe the author intended to show a usecase with this blogpost. If you look closely, the results are far from satisfactory. As methods and techniques evolve, this can become a cloud service.
jeffjose··on Block ads on home devices using a Raspberry Pi
Can you elaborate on what pdnsd does? I understand how editing the hosts file work, but this pdnsd thing is new to me. Thank you!
jeffjose··on Real-time GIF images
You're right. Google changed the way they did images a while back to prevent email image marketers who used to track when the user opened an email using a 1pixel transparent image downloads.
jeffjose··on Real-time GIF images
Dont dismiss something just because the current usecase doesnt suit you.
jeffjose··on Netflix socks detect when you've dozed off and pause your TV show
What was this app?
jeffjose··on Move Fast and Fix Things
In the pursuit to get-things-done, we forget fundamentals and more often than not its the sound fundamentals that come in handy when your product has grown beyond your 1 or 2 member original tech team.
jeffjose··on Sundar Pichai: Let’s not let fear defeat our values
Nicely written! Also interesting how this essay is on medium and not on a Google owned property. Medium has become a place for serious long form essays.
jeffjose··on Google Begins Rolling Out Google Play Music Family Plan
With ad revenues drying up (Adblock, general lack to interest to ads) Google is forced to look at other avenues to make money and selling stuff to people is a great way for that.
jeffjose··on India’s Economic Growth Accelerates
Step 1 - search for the article on Google - https://www.google.com/search?q=India’s+Economic+Growth+Acce...

jeffjose··on Linux Performance Analysis
glances. Mentioned elsewhere in the thread.
jeffjose··on Firesheep
Yup. I was confused as to why Firesheep was resurfacing today.
jeffjose··on GNU Guile site redesign
Nicely done. Interesting how a website design will make people take a second and consider that's being presented. I remember going to the old website and immediately dashing out thinking this was something beyond me. The current design is tasteful, and well executed.
jeffjose··on The Black Box of Product Management
I go to Wharton, and can weigh in from an inside perspective. There's a lot of interest for tech generally, and PM role is probably the most coveted one. This is because most companies favor people with a background in technology (or at the very least a passion for technology). You might be able to get a job/internship in a tech company in Ops, BizDev, Corporate Strategy or Finance with a whole lot of background in tech, but PM roles definitely require one.
jeffjose··on Ask HN: New attempt at mobile markup – keep or bail?
Your screenshot has a different username. Thought I'd let you know.
jeffjose··on Locked doors, headaches, and intellectual need
> Functional programming is for the top 1% of the programmers

That's a little presumptuous, dont you think?

jeffjose··on A lot happens
Humans are social animals, and there's some part us that crave companionship and love. We could probably try and rationalize it and make a pro/con table out of love, but at the end of the day biological factors kick in, and there's only so much your thinking brain can do to control it.
jeffjose··on A lot happens
Ha. As I was reading the Carina announcement [1] yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised to see Jesse Noller as its author and I wondered to myself what happened to him. He was everywhere, couple of years back and I had no idea that you were going through pain.

As a fellow pythonista from far away land, thanks for everything you've done for python. And good to have you back.
