jeffhuys··on Coffee for people who don't like coffee
Same man, be happy you didn’t get as far as me: seizures and dissociation.

It’s just plain drugs. Mass addiction. I mean, look at this thread, and replace coffee with anything else and it’s just junkies everywhere. I understand, but from the other side it’s weird to see.

jeffhuys··on Coffee for people who don't like coffee
And for me, less dissociation and seizures.

It’s still just ordinary drugs everyone is ok with taking.

jeffhuys··on Coffee for people who don't like coffee
Loved coffee. Now gives me dissociation episodes, sometimes leading to seizures. Tried it a few times still, but still happens. I’m not alone in this. Watch out with high dosages. Even low doses make me trip now.

It’s because you either type like an LLM or because you use an LLM. We don’t like that. At least, I don’t.
jeffhuys··on Ask HN: How are you acquiring your first hundred users?
There are so many little things that sets it off. And this… person? sets off 90% of them.
jeffhuys··on Ask HN: How are you acquiring your first hundred users?
The problem with answering this is that they learn how to sound less like a robot.

Just use -, that helps a lot.

jeffhuys··on Ask HN: How are you acquiring your first hundred users?
Look at his blog. 0 spelling error, 2 big articles in 1 day. A LOT of —…

This is just an LLM. I would be surprised if this guy writes like this.

Why do you think he’s NOT an LLM?

Interesting to me how Wernicke’s Aphasia works then (which I have occasionally; my epilepsy stems from there + broca’s area). Could you explain that?

> I'm fearing the day they'll just remove that toggle for good.

Don't. Nowadays we can just re-introduce it, at least all who read this. iOS, macOS, Windows, Android... All have browser extensions, all can be modified.

jeffhuys··on Someone at YouTube needs glasses
You can just... turn it off: https://www.youtube.com/account_playback

I have it turned on, but leave my mouse to the right of the screen if I don't want autoplay. It's habit now.

They call the package LibreOffice though... So... Yeah?
jeffhuys··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (April 2025)
This would be incredible to understand why some queries execute slow; most of the time it's one of the steps in between that takes 99% of the execution time at our company. Do you record the time each step takes?
jeffhuys··on Your phone isn't secretly listening to you, but the truth is more disturbing
That's actually amazing, didn't know that. Do you have an article with some more info on it? Love to read about this stuff.
jeffhuys··on Internet in a Box
I think your original comment was mostly parsed as sarcastic.
jeffhuys··on Your phone isn't secretly listening to you, but the truth is more disturbing
You can’t be 100% confident about what you’re saying and it horrifies me that people go through such lengths to protect these… ad companies? Oh you’re just bringing some sense to the situation, right? Ad companies are the sleaziest of them all and I would not be surprised if they did stuff like this. Smart tvs, dishwashers that NEED wifi to get full functionality, phones always with me and (especially android) users accepting everything willy nilly…

Your phone might not be listening to you straight out of the box. Might. You don’t know for sure, nobody here does. Why err on the side of blissful ignorance? And then you accept 10 end-user-agreements you don’t read, install dozens of apps you don’t read the small letters of… and you think nobody had been listened to?

It’s a bigger chance it happens than that it doesn’t, in my mind. I haven’t been able to catch it using mitm proxies, but I’m not the best at that, and I haven’t a pretty virgin iphone on purpose.

jeffhuys··on Your phone isn't secretly listening to you, but the truth is more disturbing
“Hey Siri” is activated by the mic, which is always listening, but only for the key phrase. It’s not going through the OS in the traditional sense, hence the “light” only comes on when it starts to listen through the OS.
jeffhuys··on Your phone isn't secretly listening to you, but the truth is more disturbing
That’s cool, but on iPhones, there is no indicator LIGHT. Only part of the screen indicates it. And if they can trigger stuff on your phone, maybe a daemon that accidentally covers that part with black also appears, and you wouldn’t notice.
jeffhuys··on The effect of deactivating Facebook and Instagram on users' emotional state
I didn't mean to correlate the guy I'm replying to with the people I was describing, and I apologize if it seemed that way.

What does "ghaff" mean? I can't find a definition. I'm not a native English person.

jeffhuys··on The effect of deactivating Facebook and Instagram on users' emotional state
I have the complete opposite experience. I now get the aha moments I got from reddit before its private api downfall. I get actual discussions. There’s an equal split between opinions.

I think the difference here is that you were already “in” it, and it changed. I wasn’t “in” it because I hated the vibe and fakeness and just denying of my experience, but now I get the opportunity to join in a “resetting” environment. It’s refreshing and just way more real.

I blocked a few political accounts at the start and now I don’t see that at all btw

jeffhuys··on The effect of deactivating Facebook and Instagram on users' emotional state
And you all made place for guys like me; I don’t get booed away by 90% of the users anymore when engaging in discussion, more often I get an actual discussion out of it. Before that it was just a highly toxic “noo my opinion is the right one and I’m rigid on that and you’re an idiot” ambience.

Funny how things shift like that. Also never engaged with political stuff.

What browser prevents this actually? None of the browsers (even mobile) I just quickly tested just... worked? No extensions.
jeffhuys··on MeshCore, a new lightweight, hybrid routing mesh protocol for packet radios
There’s a lot of space between “file transfer” and “toy”.

If power goes out, or the internet, or both, I can still contact my entire family spread all around my city, because I gave them all a node to set up in their attic / on their roof. Additionally, they all got a t-deck charged and ready to go.

When shit hits the fan, at least we can find each other.

jeffhuys··on MeshCore, a new lightweight, hybrid routing mesh protocol for packet radios
To provide another perspective: where I live, I can basically reach the entire country if I’m lucky (Netherlands) or my entire city when I’m extremely unlucky. It totally depends on the amount of people / nodes strengthening the network. I’m deploying nodes near dead spots up in trees and the like, with solar panels and batteries, to work even better and without power.

jeffhuys··on LLM-hacker-news: LLM plugin for pulling content from Hacker News
I'm not really sure actually. But to be honest, I'd rather see these tools be public instead of private; you can't really block this kind of thing anyway. Better have it out in the open where others can benefit/learn...

This whole thing is a Pandora's box. We can regulate, forbid, anything, but we all already have models downloaded locally (you did too, right..?). So unless there's some client-side "computer says no" we will never be able to block this anymore.

jeffhuys··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU

jeffhuys··on Why I don't discuss politics with friends
Oh, like that! Yeah, fully agree. This is one of the reasons the conspiracy theory "they both answer to the same group of overlords" is so big. I still wish I lived in America, though.
