jeffhuys··on SponsorBlock – skip sponsor segments on YouTube
The sponsors don't pay less if you skip the segment. They won't know.
jeffhuys··on Verso – Web browser built on top of the Servo web engine
Wow. Every single day I’m still amazed by people.
jeffhuys··on Argdown, like Markdown for argument mapping
There was a website called (I believe) Arguman (way) in the past, that used this kind of thing. It allowed everyone to add arguments, rebuttals, such a thing, and up/downvote them. Last time I looked at it, it was down (still on wayback, but it was a webapp, so it never really loads anything).

Edit: it's... "up", but suddenly Turkish and broken: https://arguman.org

jeffhuys··on Structured Outputs in the API
FYI you can just hold down the “ button and get a ".
jeffhuys··on Robot dog cleans up beaches with foot-mounted vacuums
Do you have a use for a highly specialized vacuum cleaner with 4 hoses 40cm each?
jeffhuys··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
But my attention span! Nooo!
jeffhuys··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
Netherlands is the worst at this. More and more “PIN ONLY”. Also more and more tight rules about how much you're allowed to have.

Luckily I can just give someone a paper wallet containing crypto. No transactions, no traceability, no rules.

jeffhuys··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
Dude. SO MUCH STUFF runs on Windows.
jeffhuys··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
They should’ve been.
jeffhuys··on Show HN: 30ms latency screen sharing in Rust
Then how does something like moonlight, parsec, or Geforce Now work? Sub-10ms latency, sometimes even sub-5 depending on time of day and network congestion.
jeffhuys··on Aya: A minimalist version control system with fewer than 6 commands
> Here's an example of a confusing error in Git that you won't encounter in Aya:

> > ! [rejected] main -> main (fetch first) error: failed to push some refs to 'https://github.com/Mohamedjcali/aya'

> > hint: Updates were rejected because the remote contains work that you do not

> > hint: have locally. This is usually caused by another repository pushing to > > hint: the same ref. If you want to integrate the remote changes, use

> > hint: 'git pull' before pushing again.

> > hint: See the 'Note about fast-forwards' in 'git push --help' for details.

1. So you don’t see it in Aya, why? Because it just doesn’t check, or because there’s a more sophisticated way to fix discrepancies like this in large codebases?

2. I really don’t understand how this error can be confusing. The only times I’ve seen someone be confused by this is because they didn’t actually read the error, but got an unexpected message and immediately gets their senior (me) to read it for them…

jeffhuys··on I Received an AI Email
That is the giveaway for some of the high-profile LLMs. The ones I run locally with ollama can be VERY close to perfectly human, subtle typos and all
jeffhuys··on Pattern of brain damage is pervasive in Navy SEALs who died by suicide
> why is one not free to die?

For the very simple reasons: it costs money and resources to grow up (and to die), and it’s a life that capitalism could’ve otherwise maybe used.

jeffhuys··on Apple found in breach of EU competition rules
That would actually be pretty nice; devs would maybe not update every day but once a month or something, and have actual changelogs, AND the review queue would be way shorter.

jeffhuys··on Chimpanzees 'self-medicate' with healing plants
> humans would have picked it up looong before modern medicine

We did. All modern medicine has its roots (heh) in plants. We might have distilled it down to its active compound(s) and increased the dose, but nature has it all.

200 years ago in the West it might’ve been all placebo (and literal snake oil), but the East had it figured out.

Modern medicine is good, but we’re standing on the shoulders of giants.

jeffhuys··on Why your brain is 3 milion more times efficient than GPT-4
You’re holding on to a lost battle. We are biological computers. Maybe there’s something deeper behind it, like what some call a soul, but that’s hard to impossible to prove.
jeffhuys··on Loop: Open-source macOS window manager
Super handy! I regularly work on multiple projects at once. Have 3 phpstorm windows open, but working on project A, I can just CMD+Tab because project A is focussed. I switch between browser, terminal, editor, etc. Then, when switching to project B, I do CMD+` once in every app, and I’m done.

To me, this makes windows feel like a maze and macos feel natural.

jeffhuys··on Client-Side-Scanning: Chat Control Is Pure Surveillance State
Tempted to create a device for me and my friends with just a screen and a blackberry-type keyboard.
jeffhuys··on Show HN: XDeck – An ad-blocking client app for macOS, like TweetDeck
I think the original question is valid here - I also don’t get any right-wing ads. I guess that is because I never interact with those kind of post, also not negatively, exactly BECAUSE I want to see less of them.

Please be aware that the both of you don’t know, unless you’re not mentioning any studies on purpose. You’re both projecting your own subjective experience onto an entire community.

jeffhuys··on How to copy a file from a 30-year-old laptop
I also love how they required this to always know the sender of the fax, but then not requiring you to fill in a name…
jeffhuys··on How to copy a file from a 30-year-old laptop
Just program directly on the macbook! :D would be fun to experience imo
jeffhuys··on How to copy a file from a 30-year-old laptop
`cat file > /dev/com1`, or something like that.
jeffhuys··on Intel's anti-upgrade tricks defeated with Kapton tape
Still, when you’re due for a new car and look for the newest of the newest, would you go with manufacturer A, who released their latest car 8 years ago, or manufacturer B, who released it 1 year ago?

Incremental upgrades get so much hate around the internet (mostly about phones) by people having the version before it. Saying things like “ah they changed almost nothing! Why would I upgrade?!” While for instance me, only on my 3rd smartphone EVER, would love all the incremental updates over the years when I finally decide I need a new one, because I always get the latest and greatest. If a company then doesn’t release anything for a few years, I’d go somewhere else.

jeffhuys··on AI headphones let wearer listen to a single person in a crowd by looking at them
That’s a shockingly high latency for a major city! Getting 3ms to google.com here, big city in the Netherlands. Probably close to a data center.
