jeffgreco··on YouTube TV removed from Roku channel store amid Google contract dispute
Unfortunately the exact same thing is happening with Apple TV right now. A really great box but they are absolutely jamming Apple TV+ down their users’ throats.
jeffgreco··on User tracking inspection result for about.gitlab.com
> On the site you are inspecting, information entered in the name, family-name, given-name fields were logged.

That doesn’t sound like “autocomplete purposes” to me.

jeffgreco··on DDT dump site off L.A. coast much bigger than scientists expected
Very strange to me that the name of the responsible company (Montrose Chemical Corporation) is nowhere to be found in this article.
jeffgreco··on DreamWorld (YC W21) MMO raises all red flags
I can’t stress enough how objectively terrible this game looks.
jeffgreco··on Are top websites using WebGL for fingerprinting?
Is fingerprinting not trying to uniquely identify a user?
jeffgreco··on Webamp: Winamp 2 in the browser
Check here? https://skins.webamp.org/?query=Yaxay
jeffgreco··on I made a mobile app for my significant other and she won't use it
FWIW tools like Firebase Auth make the development piece fairly negligible (and also have the concept of anonymous users).
jeffgreco··on Brave disables Chromium FLoC features
Why are you spending time on websites you don’t find useful?
jeffgreco··on Brave disables Chromium FLoC features
I would respect the Adblock crowd more if they didn’t run around describing their actions as brave or “morally responsible.” It’s ok to admit that you’re taking something without return!
jeffgreco··on Is that ship still stuck?
How many copters are you assuming?
jeffgreco··on The Internet has been cut in Myanmar for the 36th consecutive night
Further background on the western tech the Myanmar military is using to maintain power: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/01/world/asia/myanmar-coup-m...
jeffgreco··on The Internet has been cut in Myanmar for the 36th consecutive night
When they’ve cut during the day they disrupt the whole economy, as well as their own communications. Great background here: https://www.newyorker.com/tech/annals-of-technology/in-myanm...
jeffgreco··on Debranding Is the New Branding
Why does the author equate removing embellishment to “debranding”? All of the examples (save the fashion lines) are still distinctly of a brand, no less than the previous shiny versions.
jeffgreco··on Insect Has Gears in Its Legs (2013)
> Wait! It gets better. These gears are training wheels!

This is very cool, helps the young bugs coordinate both legs for jumping before letting them lose the bumps and graduate to precision jumping.

jeffgreco··on SF poop-testing startup, once compared to Theranos, charged in $60M fraud scheme
Adult Swim had the best take on Silicon Valley poop tech: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DJklHwoYgBQ
jeffgreco··on Blake 32
YouTube link for those of us without DOS handy: https://youtu.be/kM2i2s4ItiA
jeffgreco··on AARD Code, or how Bill Gates finished off the competition
Wow:

> On July 6, 1994 Kildall, 52, walked into a Monterey bar. He was wearing motorcycle leathers with Harley-Davidson patches;a would-be biker. There were some real bikers in the bar. Something was said. There was pushing and shoving, and Kildall died from injuries sustained to his head. An inquest called the death “suspicious,” but no one was charged.

jeffgreco··on The Design of Forms in Government Departments (1962)
Love these illustrations of a form being revised: https://design-of-forms.online/the-form-in-print/alphabets/

And a nice selection of typefaces! Times Roman, Gill Sans, even Rockwell for some headings.

edit: these are great too https://design-of-forms.online/the-form-in-print/rules/

jeffgreco··on The Invention of a New Pasta Shape
Hot take: I prefer eating pasta to eating sauce. A bit of sauce, sure, but “maximum saucibility” makes me think you should just grab a spoon and eat sauce.
jeffgreco··on What I learned in two years of moving government forms online (2018)
Boston has a number of ways to access online services, including free public wi-fi, libraries, and even a mobile City Hall that brings services directly to different neighborhoods: https://www.nationalcivicleague.org/promising-practices/bost...

More accessible than requiring someone to go to a City Hall basement!

jeffgreco··on Learnimprov – Just the first improv game site
They have a pretty interesting "Deprecated" section to document games that they no longer recommend. Some are because of changing cultural mores, but others are because of danger to self and property!

> Toilet Roll: This scene must be completed before a burning length of toilet paper reaches the player’s pants.

jeffgreco··on Hubble Space Telescope is back online after software glitch
I’m continually impressed by space missions that last several times their original life expectancy - the Hubble was expected to last 10–15 years and yet here we are 30+ years later expecting at least that yet to come.
jeffgreco··on Baserow.io – Self-hosted Airtable alternative
Though they’re already laying the groundwork for “premium” features like admin tools, role based permissions, kanban and calendar views which would be paid subscriptions for self-hosted options too.

I always worry that essential features for tools like these will get bumped into one of those paid tiers.

jeffgreco··on Based Cooking
Nope, people got recipes from books and magazines, which were considered reliable gatekeepers.

Looking back at some of the gelatin casseroles of the 60s, of course, casts doubt on some of that reliability.

jeffgreco··on Investigating how the New York Times A/B tests their headlines
In several of these the shift is due to a headline written about an upcoming event being changed during and after the event, especially the Trump and Cuomo examples. Interesting tracking but not really A/B, which would be testing two different headlines roughly simultaneously.
jeffgreco··on Thanks HN: Lessons learned after Google nearly killed my site
Whose should it be? Why would they be better than Google?
jeffgreco··on Video CD
Late 90s/early 00s anime piracy sense tingling...
jeffgreco··on Can’t use iCloud with “true” as the last name
I’ve found voice dictation surprisingly useful in these situations - you can instruct which case to use as well as using military alphabet.

https://support.apple.com/guide/tv/use-siri-dictation-atvb21...

jeffgreco··on Wealthy alumni supporting “Eyes of Texas” threatened to pull donations
One of the emails says the student athletes need to “do what they’re paid to do” which says it all about how these gross alumni see things.
jeffgreco··on Demoscene the Amiga Years Volume 1
Does anyone have recommendations for other books/publishers like this? Some combination of tech/game history and beautiful book design?

Bitmap Books https://www.bitmapbooks.co.uk/, Stripe Press, and Read Only Memory https://readonlymemory.vg/ are three I’ve really enjoyed.
