jeffalbertson··on US Federal Reserve raises interest rates for first time since 2018
Grocery stores were emptied but i'll agree that people weren't starving. Maintain housing? I am knee deep trying to buy my first house and completely priced out of my home state. We've had 5 offers on houses now go ~100k over asking. It is brutal out there on housing. Moving to another state means leaving my extended family and taking a pay cut due to company pay scale policies for out of CA workers.

25bps wont help 7.9% inflation. We cant substantially raise rates like the 80s because there is too much debt. The current war will cause trade & commodity issues that wont reveal themselves till late this year. The current admin just signed another 1.5 trillion. And they will keep creating money to finance war or bail out bad situations they themselves created. Middle class and lower are screwed

Not trying to be a rude but why even make this comment? Just saying something is bad and inferring people are amateurs without offering any insight yourself is just as useless as the opinions you think are uninformed

so many people in this thread will play the common HN intellectual and exclaim how the fed is obviously trapped, or what they did wrong to do get us here.

And in a different thread will trash bitcoin only focusing on its energy consumption and not its potential sound money properties.

If Bitcoin is bad, and the Fed (and every government ever) created a situation which will only lead to poverty & widening wealth gap, whats the solution?

jeffalbertson··on US Senate votes unanimously to make daylight savings time permanent
Being from CA, Daylight savings is the closest thing I have to seasons. I find the clock changing to be festive and fun :(
jeffalbertson··on Advice on JSX Conditionals
its rare but im ok with a nested ternary when its being passed down as a prop. dont wanna use a function in that situation.

sidenote - I discovered vladimirs blog a while back and love it. high quality content

jeffalbertson··on An insane baseball proposal: Dual league restructuring
the XFL missed an opportunity to focus on baseball instead. NFL is too strong on the marketing front and dynamically changes their rules to meet new needs.

Baseball is poorly marketed and is extremely slow to change (not always a bad thing). But an XBL, or something like it, would have been a stronger challenger to the MLB than the XFL was to the NFL.

jeffalbertson··on Explain the first 10 lines of Twitter's source code to me
this is such a dumb, mediocre gotcha interview question.

I prefer take homes to live coding questions but ffs, ask me questions that will pertain to my day to day responsibilities and have me explain my code sample. No FE dev in 2022 is creating a bunch of HTML pages.

jeffalbertson··on Attacking an Ethereum L2 with Unbridled Optimism
I mean they just disclosed a 1.6mil hack 40days ago.

I like polygon and unfortunately feel like hacks/stolen funds are part of the maturing process for blockchain projects but im not yet ready to say they are building a reputation for solid secure code.

jeffalbertson··on Career advice nobody gave me: Never ignore a recruiter
Very much agree with this comment. Just had an awful experience with a Jobot recruiter and will 100% never work with anyone affiliated with that company again.
jeffalbertson··on Badger leads archaeologists to hoard of Roman coins in Spain
cant even imagine how exhilarating that must be to find a lost treasure. Im well aware these probably don't have much value but still super cool
jeffalbertson··on More than 1M fewer students are in college, the lowest numbers in 50 years
in addition to cost, there is also a feeling I didn't get ANY value from the curriculum. Some majors are great but many give you 0 skills for the real world. I majored in communications cause I had no idea what I wanted to do in life. By the time I figured out I loved software, I had graduated.

The best lessons I learned in college were off campus and developing my social skills (which is important).

jeffalbertson··on Kosovo bans cryptocurrency mining to save electricity
crypto evangelicals are either get rich quick folks or sound money advocates. The former sucks but they are in every investment cicle.

The latter's religion has been based in seeing governments bailout bad actors with 0 consequences & devalue a currency astronomically over a 100 year period. Salaries are not keeping with the rise in asset prices which means the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Buying a house in CA as a millennial is laughable.

Bitcoin or a gold standard is the only system that encourages a thriving middle class economy and keeps the government from poor policy decisions. Bitcoin seems to be better than gold since its mobile, transparent, finite. But i'd welcome a return to a gold standard with open arms.

I believe that 1) not all solutions can be 100% perfect for all problems an 2) a medium of exchange created by the people is our only hope to keep the gov/fed from enslaving with us debt forever 3) Judging what should/should not be able to use electricity is a slippery slope.

jeffalbertson··on Poll: Which FAANG is the most likely to decline in the years ahead?
im going netflix. the sheer amount of services the other companies provide is staggering compared to netflix. The streaming space is very crowded, and netflix has the most expensive pricing while shifting to being dependent on shows they create vs a catalog of others.
jeffalbertson··on Stanford requires booster shots for all students
Fascinating honesty in a lot of comments in this thread. HN trends liberal and the sentiment here feels growing frustration with how gov, corps, schools are handling things. I sense the general population is turning a corner, where despite what your politics are on the vaccine, everyone is over it and will demand life prior to covid.
jeffalbertson··on Ask HN: Why doesn't YC list compensation for their own open positions?
Agreed. At the end of the day you pay X for job Y. Adding a "where you live" variable makes no sense in the context of the work required for job Y.
jeffalbertson··on Ask HN: Are most of us developers lying about how much work we do?
you're not alone. I probably work the same amount as you. I ship stuff the org feels customers love, I get promotions, and get paid well. I could grind so much more but I like to spend my day in other ways. I like to read the news in the morning, clock out at 5 etc.

We have the ability to "work" this little and still be valuable because writing code has a very high barrier to entry. That 5-10 hrs of work took years of learning.
