jeff_carr··on Mercedes is the first automaker to offer Level 3 self-driving in the US
Exactly. More like they are selling vaporware. I paid $7500 for the self driving mode _a full year ago_ and it I definitely don't expect it to ever work now. They clearly sold customers something they didn't have.
jeff_carr··on Valve is paying open-source developers to work on Proton, Mesa, and more
Punishing people living under totalitarian rule might not be a good idea.

+1 for Cloudflare
jeff_carr··on VPN by Google One security assessment
> Google was never going to get what it wanted/needed <with the CCP>

That is not at all accurate. The CCP attempted to infiltrate Google's internal systems by having spies get jobs inside of Google. The CCP also blocked all google services and then developed identical ones to compete with Google globally.

The CCP is extremely nefarious. Any government that blocks children from reading an encyclopedia should be considered to be committing a crime against humanity.

jeff_carr··on Building a Virtual Machine Inside ChatGPT
You deserve to be credited with this idea.

That might be a lot harder than the Turing test. If not only for the sake of argument that only human that could come close would be Fabrice Bellard.

jeff_carr··on Ask HN: What is the most impactful thing you've built?
You win. I'm only the co-founder of Digitalocean. I tip my hat to one of the giants we all stand on the shoulders of.
jeff_carr··on GitLab 15.5
Wow, lots of gitlab hate here but at thee same time lots of love. Everyone loves gitlab. I think the core issue is when things become so complicated, you can run your own git server. As I mentioned in another comment, projects like gitea are designed for complicated problems like this. If you are as savvy as you seem to be, spin up a VM and run gitea. A normal VM at digital ocean at $1k a month could handle any conceivable load. Don't 3rd party something you can do yourself for free.
jeff_carr··on GitLab 15.5
Have you tried gitea? It's super hard core. Also, it's written in golang.

The only thing that will cause gitea to fail, as far as I can tell, is the hardware. It's basically a daemon on top of the linux kernel.

Stand on the shoulders of giants.

When you can.

jeff_carr··on Did an NYU professor get fired because students hate organic chem?
> The students didn't petition to get him fired, they didn't ask for that

If this is true, this isn't being reported widely enough.

jeff_carr··on Did an NYU professor get fired because students hate organic chem?
> I had an O-Chem professor who explicitly set a curve and > gave incredibly difficult exams, such that only a few people > in the 100+ person class could get an A.

Isn't that how an 'A' grade is supposed to work? I'm not suggesting you curve it to deliberately fail people, but an 'A', 'B' and 'C' should have some meaning. If 90% of a class get's an A, the grading is meaningless and might as well just be pass/fail.

God forbid Google let the free software world actual make free software builds for the android reference developer hardware.

Bastards.

jeff_carr··on Debian votes to include proprietary firmware, amends social contract
Some hardware firmware is a binary blob because THERE IS NO KNOWN WAY TO COMPILE IT.

Certain chips are manufactured with an initialization code sequence that is generated very similarly to how an FPGA floor planning works.

It should be made clear this Debian Vote is to include Proprietary Firmware in the installer so it is possible for new users to install and try Linux. If it's not in the installer, new users just perceive that free software / Linux just doesn't work at all. That doesn't help anyone.

jeff_carr··on Outlook.com is silently discarding email messages (2015)
If you are running a business and have customers having emails that are silently being dropped, adding a "verify your email address" page in your process is probably a good step to have anyway.
jeff_carr··on Upscayl – Free and Open Source AI Image Upscaler for Linux, macOS and Windows
You deserve credit for this tool. I used it on a 35mm slide taken in 1982 that was scanned using a Nikon SUPER COOLSCAN 9000 ED. The original image was around 4000x3000 pixels. I ran it through and resized it back down and it's impressively better.

The binary at 160MB ran flawlessly on a HP Dev One laptop with Debian sid and processed the image in about 10 minutes. The difference is remarkable.

You have done a brilliant job of getting a simple front end on top of a huge pile of complicated under the hood by doing the smart thing: using your time efficiently so you can focus on the hard parts of the puzzle.

jeff_carr··on Facebook says Apple is too powerful – they're right
I just purchased the new HP Dev One to give it a shot. I'm quite happy with it so far. $1k. Also has a nipple mouse. https://hpdevone.com/
jeff_carr··on Waymo begins driverless rides in San Francisco
For readers that have not watched the TED talk about Google's self driving cars (now Waymo): https://www.ted.com/talks/chris_urmson_how_a_driverless_car_...

It's worth noting that TED talk is from 7 years ago and it's still much better than what a modern Tesla appears to be able to determine.

jeff_carr··on Why might you run your own DNS server?
It's unclear. Do you know what CA's you currently trust on your machine? I bet you can't even identify 1 tenth of them.

There are so many CA's installed by default that it's truly a massive man-in-the-middle attack whenever you might think you are safe, you are not.

I would assume the CCP & the KGB control at least one of the CA's your OS currently trusts. (No doubt the NSA has one too)

In debian: dpkg -L ca-certificates

jeff_carr··on Which version of JDK should I use?
> Use whatever vendor happens to be most convenient to install

Yes -- do what everyone else does.

> Generally go with JDK 11

Seconded.

User rococode is dead on correct here.

jeff_carr··on Firefox 90
The biggest annoyance is the bookmark toolbar icons not transferring or syncing between machines.

I don't care about the theoretical tracking issues of favicon.ico. There should be an option to turn on syncing of the bookmark icons.

jeff_carr··on A2Z: A computer designed and built from scratch. Custom CPU on FPGA (2017)
Also, RiscV has matured and had upstream gcc and linux kernel support. It is also completely GPL'd and you can run it on an FPGA.

This project is cool and done with the correct intentions by the author, but there are other projects with the same correct intentions that are already much farther along.

jeff_carr··on Apple and Google Face Growing Revolt Over App Store ‘Tax’
The most scary part of this story is a minor line item:

... except China. In other words, China is just stealing EVERYTHING FROM EVERYONE and not even Apple or Google can stop it from happening.

This article is about pushing Google and Apple to lower percentages -- perhaps 5% from what once was 30% and that these two giants are the dangerous entities in the world? Let me know when Google and Apple shut down the wikipedia or block news about Tienanmen Square or block pictures of Winnie the Poo.

Until then I hope Apple and Google get stronger. If you want a balance against the central state, then capitalism might be your best option.

jeff_carr··on Issues with corporate censorship and mass surveillance
Why would someone put a tor server behind cloudflare in the first place? If you are using cloud flare, you are using it to protect yourself from abuse (DDOS, etc). Doesn't allow GET requests mean you can DDOS things behind cloudflare then?

I'm skeptical that cloud flare can somehow be roped into 'corporate censorship' -- they IMHO clearly were not founded or intended to enable some sort of nefarious intent. Quite the opposite in fact.

TLDR: The title of this article is dubious or even trolling

jeff_carr··on Ada 2012: A New Language for Safe and Secure Software (2012)
"Ada: A New Language"

Haha. Did I just take some acid and end up back in 1973. That would be cool if this is true. Now I can really see Pink Floyd live.

jeff_carr··on Potential security flaw in network (digitalocean.com)
I'm very surprised by this. I see (or assume I see) the server you used to have. Nor can I find a ticket related to this issue. I don't want to flat out say "Will not fix -- can not reproduce" but on the other hand, I can't fix it if we can't reproduce it.
