jeff18··on Skype IP Lookup
There is a pretty substantial difference between a few Blizzard employees knowing your IP address and the entire public knowing your IP address.
jeff18··on Skype IP Lookup
Most residential internet connections don't have any sort of DDOS protection, so privacy issues aside, at the very least you are open to a simple denial-of-service attack. This was a huge problem for the popular progamer "Destiny" in the Starcraft 2 community.
jeff18··on Whitelist Your Routes, "match" is Evil
Just FYI, the entire HTTP request is encrypted with SSL, including the URL. Otherwise https://www.google.com/?q=sensitive+query would be pretty pointless!
jeff18··on Mailcheck.js - How we decreased sign up confirmation email bounces by 50%
"Almost never" is not good enough when you silently send someone's sensitive files to the wrong person.
jeff18··on Kara Is Self-Aware
Because a live action performance would be a pretty terrible tech demo of real-time rendering on a popular gaming console.
jeff18··on How casinos distract
If we can't give peer-reviewed, easily repeatable experiments the benefit of the doubt, we are in trouble.
jeff18··on Wheres the pixel?
You should partner with a screen cleaning vendor.
jeff18··on The Humble Bundle for Android (and Mac / Windows / Linux)
That video is certainly a poor representation of Anomaly's gameplay since it is just a cutscene. I will make a note to find a better one. Thanks for the feedback!

> I understand that you consider your app distribution needs special, but each time a large, active and popular company/developer does this, it hurts the platform as a whole.

They are special. :)

You can indeed by clicking the disclosure triangle to the left of the charity slider. Perhaps it is too small?
jeff18··on The Humble Bundle for Android (and Mac / Windows / Linux)
Yes it is :)

We are currently beta testing an app that will organize your downloads and provide updates in a central spot for Humble Bundles (like the Amazon Marketplace), which should be ready for the public in the next couple of days.

Additionally, the apps themselves will notify you if there is an update, akin to how Sparkle works on Mac OS X (Adium, et al. use this).

Finally, you can download updates from our website similar to how it works for PC.

jeff18··on Apology to 37signals
The Sharebooster logo is actually stock art: https://twitter.com/#!/launchbit/status/163328570364669952

jeff18··on Convore (YCW11) is reborn as Grove.io, a chat service for businesses
It is, because there are a number of popular IRC clients that don't support XMPP.
jeff18··on Convore (YCW11) is reborn as Grove.io, a chat service for businesses
It is based on IRC, so you can seamlessly use Adium, etc. to use it, in addition to the web client.
jeff18··on Namecheap to Donate $1 to EFF for Every Domain Transfer on December 29th
I wish you could just give namecheap your GoDaddy credentials and have them move your domains properly for you. I am definitely not looking forward to figuring out GoDaddy's UI for all my domains.
jeff18··on Want Smarter Kids? Space Them (At Least) Two Years Apart
So in other words, it is not responsible to ever use the word "smart" in a headline?
jeff18··on Yelp Hires Goldman and Citigroup to Lead I.P.O.
> Beyond that, what's the point of contributing all this content to Yelp?

What's the point of writing a long comment on Hacker News? ;)

jeff18··on When Indie game development gets a black eye
It's not like when you are constructing a house and a tornado happens to knock out months of your hard work. Programming is less like laboriously laying thousands of bricks, but more like very carefully laying a small handful of bricks in just the right places after a lot of thought.

I have a feeling that as they start re-developing what they have lost, they will find that the work goes 1-2 orders of magnitude faster than it went when they originally did it and in just a few weeks they will be caught up.

I think the way that they are handling it (treating it as pretty much a project ending blow) is pretty questionable.

jeff18··on Google Analytics Blog: What’s happening on your site right now?
I've been using GoSquared for this and it has been working really well: http://www.gosquared.com/ It will be interesting to see how the new Google Analytics features compare. If they offer a GoSquared style API, that would be pretty fantastic.
jeff18··on Noca - Payments Simplified
It was indeed too good to be true. I think you guys should mention that on the site.

It's not really fair to compare yourself to Amazon's micro transaction fees but not actually accept micro-payments.

jeff18··on Noca - Payments Simplified
A flat 3.49% (not even including the 20% discount at volume) for credit cards is substantially better than PayPal and Amazon for micro-transactions.

Is there some kind of hidden fee or limitation I'm missing?

jeff18··on Humble indie fumble: an XBLA horror story
My heart skipped a beat when I saw the headline!
jeff18··on How GitHub Works: Be Asynchronous
It should read as

> I tend to loathe meetings even more than 37signals loathes meetings.

(assuming you are not being facetious)

jeff18··on The Bitcoin Lottery
That's actually 0.06% per year. I wish it was per week... there was a time when it was over 5%!
jeff18··on Before Driving a Zipcar, Consider Liability Insurance
I like how he proudly claims to have been advocating this issue since 2005, then begrudgingly writes that it has never been an actual problem in ZipCar's history.
jeff18··on Appcelerator Titanium: From a developer's perspective
Here's two "show stoppers" that made me stop experimenting with Titanium.

1) If you have a custom UI, dragging the window around is painfully slow and erratic. Resizing the window is actually so slow it's unusable.

2) The built-in zip function doesn't seem to work with files over ~200 MB on Mac OS X.

I tried reaching Titanium, failed, and moved on.

jeff18··on Skype 5 for Mac
There is still no way to turn off birthday notifications on Mac OS X. That is, any time it is any one of your contact's birthdays, Skype sends you a mandatory message about it which requires user action to dismiss.
jeff18··on The HB Gary Email That Should Concern Us All (Sockpuppet Management Software)
Do you have any evidence of this? [not a suck puppet]
