jedc··on Apple is sued for telling you that you're “buying” movies
I'm surprised to see nothing on this thread about Movies Anywhere. You can use it to meld the IRL DVD purchase with the online ease of access - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Movies_Anywhere

If you buy the DVD, you get a little code to enter in the Movies Anywhere site/app. Once you do that (and connect your account to Apple, Google, etc.) then you can access the movie you purchased anywhere.

I've done this a few times - I buy the DVD but never actually watch it. Instead I have it registered with Google Play and watch it that way because it's just more convenient with my TV.

KEY - NOT ALL CONTENT is available this way. But enough is to make it a pretty nice experience. (Movies Anywhere is owned by Disney)

jedc··on France cuts two nuclear-powered submarines in half to make one new one
The US did the same thing with the USS San Francisco after it collided with an undersea seamount in 2005 and nearly sank.

From: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_San_Francisco_(SSN-711)#Co...

"In June 2006, it was announced that San Francisco's bow section would be replaced at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard with the bow of USS Honolulu, which was soon to be retired. San Francisco is four years older than Honolulu, but she had been refueled and upgraded in 2000–2002. The cost of her bow replacement has been estimated at $79 million, as compared with the estimated $170 million to refuel and overhaul the nuclear reactor of Honolulu."

jedc··on Justice Thomas suggests regulating tech platforms like utilities
100% this. Before the top layer (apps) on the internet get regulated as utilities, the deeper layers (ISPs) should.

jedc··on Launch HN: Aviron (YC W21) – High-Intensity Peloton for Rowing
I'm an OrangeTheory user and complain to my rower friends that OT doesn't use Concept2's. But it's not like I have any hope of getting OT to adopt a different product, and it's a relatively small part of an OT workout.

jedc··on Deep underwater, submariners are likely unaware of pandemic
Oh, yeah, that's a good point. My experience is also fairly old, but I vaguely remember picking up enough info during port visits, occasional NYTimes digests (when we had bandwidth to grab them), etc. that I didn't feel really out of touch. But given how much news happens every damn day lately, sailors definitely aren't getting that.
jedc··on Deep underwater, submariners are likely unaware of pandemic
Couple things - they're surfaced in the straight near Brest not because of the reactor, but because it's too shallow to operate. For example, US East-coast submarines have to transit for hours on the surface to get to the dive point because of the continental shelf. On the US West coast (Hawaii, San Diego), they can pretty much dive shortly after leaving port.

More people than the Commanding Officer and Executive Officer would know their position, though. Whoever is the French equivalent of Officer of the Deck and the on-duty navigator would need to know their position. But yeah, there are times/situations where the position of the boat is MUCH more closely held - and that may be all the time on French ballistic missile submarines.

jedc··on Deep underwater, submariners are likely unaware of pandemic
you recognize... I'm the one who spent years in the US Navy operating submarines?
jedc··on Deep underwater, submariners are likely unaware of pandemic
Key point - the variation only applies when a ballistic missile submarine is "on patrol". Which is definitely not the same period of time as when they're out at sea.

When a ballistic missile submarine is NOT on patrol they operate just like a fast-attack submarine.

jedc··on Deep underwater, submariners are likely unaware of pandemic
Former US Navy submariner here. This article seems... overblown.

Now I was on fast-attack submarines (versus ballistic missile boats), but we regularly got email roughly every day when at sea. During certain operations, we would even regularly get an abridged NYTimes PDF news summary sent to us. And my grandmother died when I was underway on deployment - I got notified immediately. (Though obviously wasn't able to travel back.)

One important thing is that the IT admins on the boat had various scripts they'd run against all the email sent/received to help ensure that classified information didn't leak out, or troubling information (I think like family deaths?) leak in. But it never felt invasive.

Maybe the French Navy operates very differently than the American Navy, but... I call BS on this article.

jedc··on What happened to Mint?
I can't believe no one here has mentioned Buxfer (YC W07) yet! - https://www.buxfer.com/

I've tried a bunch of these apps and they're either too expensive, don't support multiple currencies (a deal-killer for me), or don't work well.

I highly recommend them. The founders have kept it alive and even launched a much better account syncing feature in the last few months - I happily pay for their $5/month Pro account.

jedc··on “Why We Sleep” Is Riddled with Scientific and Factual Errors
You're making a hell of a lot out of something that could be a mis-memory or easily explained. Either way, he's still the person with two decades of experience in the field, and as near as I can tell you're not. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
jedc··on “Why We Sleep” Is Riddled with Scientific and Factual Errors
Speaking for me, I believe Matthew Walker because he's been working in the field for almost twenty years, has published numerous peer-reviewed papers, etc. (Not that I believe everything but by default he gets a huge amount of credibility from me.)

You've clearly put a lot of time into your research as your post cites. But you don't have twenty years experience in the field. Why should we believe your analysis? Your criticisms could also be tangential or taking things out of context.

jedc··on This week’s dead Google product is Google Trips
Except TripIt hasn't seemed to have made any advances in their product in 5+ years. (Getting acquired by Concur certainly didn't help that.) It feels like it's 10 years old, and I'd LOVE to find a good competitor.
jedc··on Golden: Mapping human knowledge
Hi, Jed from Golden here. I'm obviously biased, but our query tool is really powerful. :) You can both include specific things in your search, but also exclude specific things. For example, show me companies that went through an accelerator, is in FinTech, but not based in the US or UK. jedc··on Homeshare Shuts Down Today
"I’m thankful we had the opportunity to turn this simple idea into a business that made a difference."

That doesn't help when they can't/won't provide refunds for stuff like room dividers. Instead they're "transferring ownership" to whoever has them.

jedc··on FCC fines Swarm $900K for unauthorized satellite launch
"Earlier this month, SpaceX launched three more satellites for Swarm on a Falcon 9 rocket after winning FCC approval."

This feels like a pretty important point - Swarm got slapped for their mistakes with that launch, but they're already back on track if the FCC already granted permission (what must have been months ago) for their most recent satellites. I wonder if it was just down to confusion on Swarm's part on how the rules applied.

jedc··on U.S. considers adding nuclear cruise missiles to destroyers and submarines
Speaking as a former Navy submariner, this isn't going to happen. The surface Navy doesn't have the background or training to handle nuclear weapons - nukes are (and should be) taken extraordinarily seriously. They're not just an add-on weapon, they simply have to be the core of what that ship does in order to be treated properly.
jedc··on Google, You Creepy Sonofabitch
When I lived in London I once read a text from my wife to a black cab driver with instructions of where I was supposed to meet her for dinner.

Even though I didn't have the correct name of the street (and didn't have the name of the restaurant at all!), the driver got the right street and the right restaurant. (The street had probably 10+ restaurants on it.) I was astonished, and have never forgotten it.

jedc··on Dropbox Files Confidentially for U.S. IPO
To me, the interesting thing about Dropbox going public is how comparisons to Box could/will drive Dropbox's valuation. Any investor can easily check out Box's financials https://finance.google.com/finance?q=NYSE%3ABOX&fstype=ii&ei... and easily compare Dropbox's numbers to that.

So Box suffered the pain of being the first in the easy consumer/business online storage category to IPO -- but Box's numbers are now driving valuation of their competitor.
