jebblue··on Firefox exploit found in the wild
Browsers are supposed to browse that's all. More and more stuff like this will come up with HTML5/JavaScript and people will begin to wonder why the world is jumping through all the JavaScript hoops to build a web app that is essentially a rich client app when they could use tools that are designed for that. Are they more or less secure, neither, once you can touch the user's filesystem the risk is the same which is why it still baffles me that developers actually want to code in JavaScript and dozens of one off libs when they could use first class tools which are far better designed. Browsers are supposed to browse, that is all they are supposed to do.
jebblue··on Making Netflix.com Faster
For a non-signed in session I can see some advantage in improving the swiftness of implementing supporting changes on the server for the client developers. For signed in sessions, you can't get around the database and an API update for it when the client needs some new feature or access so in the signed in case; I think the benefits of this nodejs part would be diminished.
jebblue··on Making Netflix.com Faster
So node.js can replace Java/Tomcat? I guess I'll have to pinch my nose and somehow start liking JavaScript. Typescript looks good, that might make it palatable.
jebblue··on Making Netflix.com Faster
I don't know what that is but when Netflix got movies working in the browser on Ubuntu I was amazed and very pleased.
jebblue··on Making Netflix.com Faster
Our 8 bucks or whatever per month is hands down the best money we ever spent. I should write a blog article on cutting the cable with OTA and Roku/Netflix.
jebblue··on Hawaii Bans Non-Compete and Non-Solicit Clauses in High-Tech Employment
>> I don't want to be outside in June, July or August though.

There's also rattlesnakes, scorpions and Giant Redhead Centipedes: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/texas-wildlife-offi...

We had a rattlesnake sun bathing in our back yard, we've killed 2 of those centipedes in our garage and 2 or 3 scorpions in the house (always look in your shoes).

There's also the red ants, vicious little creatures then of course the drought years followed by a flood year or two.

And don't get me started on allergies.

jebblue··on How Not to Die (2007)
In addition to not doing other things, I'd like to suggest adding the idea that one also does not have to burn out or be burned out doing a startup.
jebblue··on China to Set Up ‘Security Offices’ Inside Internet Companies
I think it's different than a forced police presence forcing you to run your business a certain way.
jebblue··on China to Set Up ‘Security Offices’ Inside Internet Companies
When the US gets close to election time and there is at least the chance of a conservative win in the White House; the Chinese government gets worried and defensive. They will probably remove the police after a couple of years and the new president (conservative or liberal) has settled in.
jebblue··on China to Set Up ‘Security Offices’ Inside Internet Companies
They can easily communicate through the great firewall so whatever the government allows and now their police force will ensure that.
jebblue··on China to Set Up ‘Security Offices’ Inside Internet Companies
Did you really equate communist forced police presence with voluntary and beneficial government partnerships with the private sector in the US? The Internet exists because of the US Government (DARPA) and US taxpayer; not under its direct police control.
jebblue··on The Most Dangerous Code in the Web Browser
Do you mean if I open tab A on one site and tab B on another then they can read each other's data without any special permissions from me? If so then that's a security breach and not a discussion of which permissions a web app or mobile app should be allowed to have.
jebblue··on The Most Dangerous Code in the Web Browser
>> We found that more than 71% of extensions require permission to “read and change all your data on the websites you visit”.

This is exactly the reason why I install so few extensions and buy none.

The same is becoming true for Android Apps, more of them require more permissions every day. Recently an app I'd run for months if not years wanted to install an update and demanded that I give it permission to view my phone calls and even the remote caller's phone number. This had nothing to do with the purpose of that app, all it would need at most is to know if a phone call came in so it could pause.

jebblue··on Ask HN: Any recommendation for reading glasses?
Thanks, I read some reviews, seems there are some weakness issues with them.
jebblue··on One Way to Fight California's Drought: Desalt the Ocean
Our HOA has a rule against collecting rain water. I remember a man in Oregon a few years ago got jail time for refusing to remove his rainwater bins.
jebblue··on Former Apple rival IBM could become the biggest buyer of MacBooks
Good points though I can't see why anyone would pay to pay solitaire in any form but for those who want to I'm fine with it.

Canonical didn't make Unity to innovate for the user as much as they did to have a unified interface that could run more easily on phones and tablets operating on the same concept as Windows 10. Whether people want that, time will tell though it was innovative thinking even though Unity is still a bad experience for experienced users, we can't even right click a Launcher icon and edit its properties. That's pretty stupid.

jebblue··on Former Apple rival IBM could become the biggest buyer of MacBooks
>> well, the new ms office for osx is really good

Didn't the Mac version of Office get canceled then restarted then canceled then restarted a number of times over the years?

jebblue··on Former Apple rival IBM could become the biggest buyer of MacBooks
IBM used to have tens of thousands of employees and not just technical people, running Linux on the desktop/laptop.
jebblue··on In the US, do you own any of your air space
Who owns the air space above your house? Above 500 feet it's the FAA. "Private landowners retain their right to exclusive use of the airspace for the reasonable enjoyment of their property up to 500 feet above their lands."

Do you really own the lower 500 feet?

jebblue··on A Well Known but Forgotten Trick: Object Pooling
We used object pooling in C++ 2 decades ago in real time applications.
jebblue··on Newegg vs. Patent Trolls: When We Win, You Win
We also need to comply with laws in order to live in a civilized society. Where in the world are there no patents today and that also has any significant positive impact on society as does America and Europe? Europe does have software patents after all.
jebblue··on Newegg vs. Patent Trolls: When We Win, You Win
The point of a patent is to protect your idea from being sabotaged by others so the money goes into your account hopefully and feeds your family and pays for your kids education, etc. Patents are not a block, they are a building block. If you find a patent that makes you think you are stuck and have to abandon your idea; think again. Look for ways to improve on the already patented idea and file a new patent referencing that patent and any others that apply. Patents are not a block; they are a building block. I'm not a lawyer though so my views are not to be taken as legal advice.

Google "build on a patent", here's on example of what I'm talking about:

"Your brilliant idea needn't fall by the wayside simply because you don't want to deal with the patent process."

jebblue··on Newegg vs. Patent Trolls: When We Win, You Win
I'm confused, are you asking if you should be fighting patent trolls or patents? If trolls, then fighting them is better than not. Patents are tools, valid and legal, you don't fight tools, you use them, improve them, complain about them, etc.
jebblue··on Why not to trust them
>> Can a player using Windows 10 Minecraft play along with a person using regular Minecraft? Are the two cross-compatible?

>> Hey there! I work at Microsoft on the Minecraft team. Is there any chance you could let me know on twitter what your location is so that we can look into the error? My twitter is @chupacaubrey. :) Thanks!

>> Minecraft Java PC version and the Windows 10 Edition are not cross-compatible. They are built on two totally different codebases, so you can't take your worlds from Java and then use them on the Windows 10 Edition. Sorry! -https://www.reddit.com/user/chupacaubrey

>> Different code bases isn't the reason they aren't cross compatible though. If they aren't cross compatible it's because the new one was made to be incompatible. -https://www.reddit.com/user/Suppafly

jebblue··on Stop pushing the web forward
Minecraft alone shows your first two points are not valid. Write a hello world app in Java, the startup time is miliseconds, the memory is not humongous.
jebblue··on The Hitchhiker's Guide to Modern JavaScript Tooling
Reading the page then the comments, even as a senior developer who only touches JavaScript when necessary; I don't see much unification in the JavaScript world today compared to 12 to 15 years ago.

React seems to be a theme, if I want to develop a modern (is Web 2.0 still the term) single-page site (is that still a phrase?) using HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript...what environment exists that is cohesive and complete as either Eclipse for Java or Visual Studio for .NET?

Here's my answer, as an outsider, Java dude who only suffers brief interludes with JavaScript...I'd pick jQuery Mobile or DART.

The thing is...whenever these JavaScript tooling articles comes up I don't see those listed. I see names like React, Meteor, Gulp, Grunt, Webpack and maybe 3 dozen more.

jebblue··on YC Fellowship
A patent being worth billions is absolutely not a flaw of any legal system.
jebblue··on YC Fellowship
"This is obviously not feasible, given that these grants are being awarded for little more than an idea."

A patent is an idea, sometimes worth nothing and sometimes worth 10's of Billions.
