jeauxlb··on Stranger Things creator says turn off “garbage” settings
It is a well-known description for what each brand calls something different. As I wait in a physiotherapist office I am being subjected to a soap opera against my will. Many will have seen snippets of The Bold and the Beautiful without watching a single episode, but enough to know that it looks 'different'.
jeauxlb··on Pebble is officially Pebble again
Kind of amazing that calling their product "Core 2 Duo" was considered their safe branding choice before this.
jeauxlb··on The force-feeding of AI features on an unwilling public
Search, music streaming, books: heavily consolidated markets where the value-based offering has supremacy (Google vs any paid search; Spotify/Apple Music vs Tidal; Amazon vs anything). It's the market supremacy that generally allows this.

If quality were a sufficiently motivating aspect, Google's deteriorating search wouldn't be a constant theme on this site, and people on the street would know where to download and play a FLAC file.

jeauxlb··on The force-feeding of AI features on an unwilling public
You might be conflating capitalism (owning things like factories) with consumerism (buying things like widgets).

If all of the factory owners discover a type of widget to sell that can incidentally drive down wages the more units they move, it's unlikely for consumers to be provided much choice in their future widgets.

jeauxlb··on Show HN: BunkerWeb – the open-source and cloud-native WAF
NPM will automate Let's Encrypt certificate generation but you're right about the other listed features.
jeauxlb··on LooksMapping
I can go into an art gallery but I may not touch the works. Often there aren't physical barriers but we all understand some behaviours are not acceptable.

Similarly, publication of an image on the internet is not implicit permission to use it for any possible purpose, however technically feasible. For example, deepfakes.

jeauxlb··on Solving climate change by abusing thermodynamic scaling laws
This is easily solved. Particularly as industry is such a large contributor to GHG emissions, imposing a carbon tax on industry and possibly even allowing grandfathering allows the costs to be baked in to (only) future considerations, and makes cleaner companies more competitive compared to dirtier ones.
jeauxlb··on I Received an AI Email
Why are you happy that people are out of a job here? You still suffer the ills of the product, now infinitely more incessant, at a marginal cost of $0.
jeauxlb··on Australia's spies, cops want accountable encryption- a.k.a. access to backdoors
At least one Australian law outlaws them https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2015/03/australia_out...
jeauxlb··on Cataloguing my vinyl collection with computer vision
I wonder how this compares to using Discog's API [1] and searching by barcode with a USB barcode scanner. Almost all of my record covers have some sort of barcode on them and I find the accuracy of searching Discogs to be quite high for records with reasonable popularity. Given the examples shown in the video, I would expect no problem.

jeauxlb··on Use Plaintext Email (2019)
It's not that ironic; it's a web page that contains far more information that one might expect in any but the largest of emails.

The web is where the eyeballs are and nobody's going to convince anyone of a new idea by wrapping whole-page content in a <pre> tag, no matter the idealological purity this would reveal. To reduce friction (already created by telling someone to potentially change email clients) with readers the author needs to speak the visual language of the medium.

jeauxlb··on What is the point of a public key fingerprint?
The free version of this software is available at https://github.com/Free-GPGMail/Free-GPGMail
jeauxlb··on Paperless-Ngx v2.0.0
Does paperless have the same support for workflows and indexes as Mayan? I use these two features heavily to automatically place documents into a hierarchy (eg payslips into their financial year). That and the ability to add arbitrary fields like 'parent', which then means I can created a linked list style association between documents, for example a series of correspondence. It's been a while since I looked at paperless and its forks, but I understand it's not quite built to have such extensibility/flexibility?
jeauxlb··on Show HN: Backname.io – every IP address gets its own domain
Some of the utility is that if you're on an IPv6-only connection that uses 464XLAT and are trying to connect to a host, DNS lookups are required for the 4-to-6 translation process.
jeauxlb··on Ask HN: What other news feeds do you read besides Hacker News?
FreshRSS is brilliant. Its ability to fetch full pages, filter CSS elements and utilise session cookies from my browser make it very easy to get a full-text article from most websites I'm interested in. If you're able to spend a little time fine-tuning after you set it up, it can be a very rewarding installation.
jeauxlb··on Bipartisan Bill Would Force Automakers to Keep AM Radio in New Cars
At least in Australia, our national emergency broadcaster is primarily on AM. Commonly in bushfires, floods, etc, all other infrastructure can be knocked out in the initial moments, and AM tends to be the last resource standing.

I do not know what large natural disasters are like in the US, but expect that would only become more frequent and severe, with a similar kind of failure rate across technologies like FM and mobile phone coverage.

As many countries would likely follow the pattern set by large car manufacturers affected by this bill, I am heartened by it and hope it passes.

jeauxlb··on Bipartisan Bill Would Force Automakers to Keep AM Radio in New Cars
The issue is that to satisfy this bill should it become law, the automakers will likely need to address the issue of high noise floors in electric vehicles. That is not something an average consumer will be able to work around/buy as an add-on.
jeauxlb··on YouTube on TVs getting unskippable 30-second and pause screen ads
At first blush I assumed it was an ad for Wikipedia and its invaluable ability to quickly educate people on ideas like the Coastline Paradox [0]

jeauxlb··on A hacker ripped me off. The scam turned out to be brilliant and terrifying
You could nominate a number or bunch of numbers that you trust (possibly with the caveat of them having to be with the same carrier), any of which could validate a request for a new SIM. Valid events would likely be a rare occurrence and so unlikely to annoy your family and friends much, but might significantly increase the difficulty of SIM-swap attacks.
jeauxlb··on Ford to drop AM radio in new models, except commercial vehicles
I’ve never used a wheelchair ramp but don’t mind that buildings that I use have them.

This move is just laziness by automotive manufacturers not wanting to address their negative externalities (spewing RF into the local environment), disguised as efficiency/progress.

jeauxlb··on When management went nuclear on an innocent software engineer
Interesting style of story-telling that seems to flips the chronology of the lie being told about time to fix (2 weeks) and the contractor being fired. Can't help but think if "Ellen" were honest about timeframes --- which a competent professional should be, even in the face of an obvious professional advantage --- then nobody need have lost their jobs for the mistaken attempt to progress the struggling project.

jeauxlb··on A Vicious Cycle: The Dangerous Dehumanisation of Cyclists
Not just this, but you will learn to read and anticipate traffic in a far deeper way, through the human survival instinct: a slight swerve foreshadowing a lane change before an indicator is pressed; an aggressive posture and edging forward indicating unreasonable eagerness to enter an intersection. These are the kinds of things you'll particularly notice as a commuting cyclist, and which I have found to be of great value as a driver too.
jeauxlb··on Things that used to be hard and are now easy

jeauxlb··on National Australia Bank compromises thousands of customer details
Name and address is in the roll. DOB absolutely is not.

Further, suggesting the blame lies with companies accepting "insufficient forms" of authentication obviously does not bear up in light of this. 2FA texts, for example, are easily worked around by SIM-swapping. Performing a SIM-swap in Australia generally does not require 2FA, and the details leaked herein would get you well on your way.

jeauxlb··on Burnout is an official medical diagnosis, WHO says

jeauxlb··on Ask HN: How do you secure your Mac?
yep
jeauxlb··on Man sues feds after being detained for refusing to unlock his phone at airport
How would this even work? I google for local "immigration lawyers"(??) and tell the person who answers a man whose name I don't know yelled at me to call them, and that they get someone down to the airport? I'd like to think if I saw this happening I'd step in to help, but I don't feel like I would have enough compelling --- let alone actionable --- information for a lawyer to be interested enough to intervene.
jeauxlb··on My home lab setup for highly-available Internet
sweet until a backhoe takes out a fibre and your entire exchange/SAM ends up saturating the 4G network, resulting in negligible network connectivity, and two heavily disrupted networks.
