jean_valje4n··on An Experience with Modafinil
Neurotransmitters are often synthesized from amino acids. They have different functions in the body, often either inhibiting or exciting the neuron that it targets.

There are a bunch of different aspects to being awake. Caffeine works on adenosine, which has to do with wakefulness. But also things like adrenaline have a different aspect of wakefulness that amphetamines target. Modafinil targets orexin receptors I believe, which involve wakefulness as well as eating.

jean_valje4n··on Write shitty code
Data Science is all about writing shitty code. Most of the time you're just digging for data in a notebook, and then you can write things out proper once you've got something that could work.
jean_valje4n··on DNA seen through the eyes of a coder
There is abstraction though. It's just fuzzy.

3 DNA base pairs abstract to an amino acid which has chemical properties. It's just theres some redundancy which 3 base pairs get converted to an amino acid. And if there's a single mistake somewhere with just one amino acid, the structure of the thousand amino acid long protein probably has some fault tolerance there.

Those amino acids are arranged in a way in the DNA code to make bigger motifs, alpha helices, beta sheets, active sites, coordinating complexes with inorganic ions.

It's all in the DNA code, though I suspect this train of thoughts is influenced by epigenetics. Parts of the DNA code also responsible for the regulation of how much the protein itself is expressed. That can still abstract to conditional and loop structures.

Yes some of the base pairs strongly bind together in the double helice which can influence stability of the DNA strand. The GC pairing has 3 hydrogen bonds, where AT has 2, but I think this influences the distribution of junk DNA, as you still need codons to make proteins which is the central dogma of biology.

I still switch it back to the XBMC-ish theme on Kodi. I think its called confluence.

Did you get it off #xbins? I think that was the only place to find binaries of it without building it yourself.

jean_valje4n··on Ask HN: How do you get articles/papers/talks recommendations?
I recommend searching for stuff in google scholar, taking into account how many citations a paper has had by other papers. This isn't foolproof, but one can read a lot of interesting primary literature that way.

Also look for review articles that summarize the studies of multiple primary literature. Review articles are amazing in that they can sum up a lot of different ideas with citations to the primary work of others.

Can someone tell me if these vector search things have anything in common with postgres's text search vectors, which have been implemented in postgres for quite a while now?
jean_valje4n··on Ask HN: Social/Mental Health
Maybe this is the right time for a rant. Or to be really real, if that makes any sense.

I often wonder how people who are sentenced to prison manage to deal with social relationships. In a situation like that, I would imagine people try to create social relationships with whoever is around. Even if the people they have a chance to speak to are, let's say, unsavory.

When covid started, it started to become difficult to maintain social relationships with those who were more acquaintances and less so friends. I have someone I would call a best friend though, who I've known since 11th grade, and we've maintained talking to each other a few times a week usually.

I think polarization of ideas has become a problem for everyone since covid. Or maybe since Trump. I'm not really sure. It seems like everyone wants to fight for a team, and I guess that is part of what comprises a human being. I get it, I like to play fighting games, which is by nature, zero sum.

I think the question is how does one stay sane given the nature of society with covid. Given the climate, it's hard to say anyone behaves in a sane manner anymore. I feel like playing into the zero sum game has become some sort of addiction, one that isn't quite fully understood yet.

I've always thought that the internet was some sort of new addiction that hasn't had any research into it. I remember AOL and I would be online for long periods of time, preventing my parents from using the phone since it was a 56k modem. And later in life when I had my issues with alcohol and marijuana, I saw strong parallels with my behavior with the internet.

I suppose this has gone on a tangent, but I think it's very relevant to mental health. Social contact is just a single aspect of mental health, and I think it's less necessary than one might presume. At least from my perspective, I feel like I behave saner than others who may be addicted to the internet, or god knows what.

In my opinion, I think to maintain mental health, one must practice brutal honesty, give others the benefit of the doubt, or at least a chance to correct their thinking which could be influenced by various gods that the machine creates. All of us are only human, myself included.

You sleep on an idea, really think about how involved you are in the lives of your peers, and what role you are assuming and what role you really have. And try to correct that cognitive dissonance that seems all too rampant these days.

It doesn't hurt to be optimistic about the future either. Pessimism is bad for the soul in my personal opinion, though it seems to be quite the addiction these days.

jean_valje4n··on Some thoughts on writing
4. Read a lot.

I've found reading lots, especially from revered authors from all nationalities, Steinbeck and Doestovsky I hold in great esteem, has had a great impact on my writing style.

I suppose we all try to emulate those we hold in esteem, and I think reading a lot from authors we like, can have a great influence in our ability to convey meaning through words.

jean_valje4n··on Opt Out of Cynicism
And then there was Caesar who promised the pirates who captured him that he would be back. And he did come back for them.

I suppose his ending wasn't the greatest, but Dante placed his betrayers into a special place in literary hell.

jean_valje4n··on Ice shelf holding back keystone Antarctic glacier within years of failure
How many years though? How many years?

I mean, the way we're going now, an end is inevitable, but it always was.

But, are the number of years within the parameters that we, or I expected? Who knows, some of us are more optimistic about the future, and others less so.

jean_valje4n··on Ivermectin for Prevention and Treatment of Covid-19 Infection
Well a lot of people with biochem background also have a lot of skepticism about it too.

Ivermectin works by interrupting nerve function of helminths(parasites). covid is a virus, not a multicellular organism with nerves.

I'm not saying ivermectin is useless, but why it would work for covid doesn't make sense (yet at least). Maybe it has some other mechanism to slow down covid that isn't fully understood.
