jdubs··on PostgreSQL 10 Beta 1 Released
Every time I see a job post mentioning mysql I realize they just haven't discovered postgres, or they have some really gross problem. :/
jdubs··on Breaking a large AWS spend into understandable pieces
If you have the money to spend, Cloudcheckr, cloud health & cloudability are great. Some of their APIs are lacking which makes going with the DBR ingestion solution a good idea for large organizations.
jdubs··on Breaking a large AWS spend into understandable pieces
They're letting their partners work on it.
jdubs··on Spotting a million dollars in your AWS account
Great write up. Working with the DBR can be painful when trying to track down funky costs like EMR and bandwidth consumed by EMR jobs. My company investigated at extending terraform to do some kind of tag check when applying however we decided it would be difficult to maintain this plugin and integrate with future versions of terraform. Now I have about 5 different lambda(* x accounts) jobs that tags things & leveraging cloud custodian for event based tag management.

As I've been looking for a vendor that could take over tag management for me and roll this out to new taggable features(lambda), I'm fnding no one in the industry has extensive tag automation. When I talk to vendors, they think I'm using tagging for organization, while it's really for cost management/reporting. Very strange. I wish AWS had a better tagging tool set than what they currently offer.

It's not xml!!!!

There's just opening and closing tags for a stanza. Look at a basic virtualhost config.

Not sure why a carrier is shooting a blue beam at some planet, but what ever.
jdubs··on Ask HN: Please AWS team, make links work with control-click
Oh jesus, Today I was messing around with Athena and S3, very cool product btw. In the new s3 control panel, I was having the hardest time selecting the bucket and path I was on so I could copy it. Its 2017, wtf?
jdubs··on Site Reliability Engineering
I used to be on call, the on call team consisted of 3 people. The site would constantly go down and I would get paged 3-5 times a week, typically around 4am or 11pm. It felt like I was never free of the burden, it ruined my ability to have any kind of life. The folks I worked with insisted on receiving informational alerts 24/7. I set hangouts to have a special noise for it. That noise still makes me jump. For some reason some folks were absolutely against raising the threshold or removing it entirely. The alert in some situations had a valid reason but would randomly go off at all hours of the day or night to remind you you that you were on call and fuck you.

I really miss that job but the oncall was just fucking the worst and has caused me to turn down future jobs because of I was burned by doing on call.

jdubs··on Reddit overhauls upvote algorithm to thwart cheaters
Too much signup friction, that would go against the status quo of growth = revenue.
jdubs··on Ask HN: When did you feel to resign/leave your last job?
It's amazing how some manager's words can have such an impact on a team.
jdubs··on Ask HN: When did you feel to resign/leave your last job?
When I realized the product manager was finding features on wikipedia and had no real customers in the pipeline. A VP told me to lie on an expense report, while managers & architects were able to expense 1k+ meals.

I knew something was up when a different VP told me to care less about the product, company and the work that I was doing.

Err, the file browser area.

Interesting that they're devoting screen real estate to something that can be found in the data section.
jdubs··on Creating a PostgreSQL Cluster Using Helm
When I looked at it two months ago, I was having issues getting it to build and deploy on my cluster. After having issues trying to dissect the simple examples, I eventually wrote something similar with python & bash wrapped up in a docker container.

My requirements were deploying 30 different apps using pretty much every kin do k8s objects and deploy custom consul configuration. It could have been done with helm, but the quick and dirty was jinja2 to the rescue.

They're targeting different segments on different business requirements. Their numbers will never be comparable.

They've done amazing things for the community. I can only hope that Apollo group continues the local outreach!

jdubs··on AWS Elasticsearch Service Woes
It's a crappy service. When the cluster autoscales to deal with load the cluster becomes unavailable for a minute or two while it restarts. In my previous role we had a very large cloud search cluster that was always under high load and very frequently threw 500s when the environment scaled up.
