jdsully··on How to deal with receiving a cease-and-desist letter from Big Tech
The premise of this article is that you somehow have to respond to it which is nuts. If the letter is ridiculous (e.g. citing terms of service you did not sign) then you're better off to ignore it and not waste money on legal fees. Also everyone who suggests getting a lawyer has probably not had to hire one in the past. With very few exceptions they will tell you it "depends" and maybe give you a few legal terms you can google. If you are lucky a good lawyer will give you their opinion on the merits of the letter but many will be so guarded it's not useful.

A C&D costs the sender almost nothing and is not the same as actually being sued. Very rarely are they serious enough to actually file something. If that does happen you should get a lawyer at that point, but doing it before is just a waste of money.

One car has 4,500 cells - bigger cells than most of the vapes. So it really is a matter of scale.
jdsully··on The $500M Dollar Typo
From the article:

The second problem is, they have to get all that money back. If a federal employee is accidentally overpaid, the government can only recoup 16.67% of the amount of the overpayment per paycheck pay period. You can’t take it all back at once. So then they had to write a special payroll job to pull all this money back. It took ‘em like four or five months to get it all, but finally it was all accounted for.

A sudden inrush of water from a dam overtopping can be much worse than a consistent flow even if the absolute quantity is the same.

Starcraft was doing that in the 90s including the tweaks to balance the different races. IMO it made the game better as clear imbalances got fixed over time.

jdsully··on UK plan to digitise wills and destroy paper originals "insane" say experts
Paper records of wills are not going to have any impact on "social stability". The connection is so tenuous that using this line of argument there is almost no expense that the government shouldn't pay for.
jdsully··on Economic Effects of State Bans on Direct Manufacturer Sales to Car Buyers [pdf]
Thats a far cry from when they used to check your oil every fill up (because your car was definitely consuming it). You had you had to grease mechanical joints on the body and suspension every 1k miles - now those are all sealed.

Old cars needed a ton of work frequently.

Ford made me sign a contract similar to this when I bought a Bronco sport. I was annoyed the dealer sprung it on me at the very end when I was getting the keys, but didn’t plan to resell in the first year anyways.

jdsully··on Review: Framework Laptop finally gets an AMD Ryzen config–and it’s pretty good
I did a DDR3 layout, sure there's a lot to think about if you want it to work in extreme temperatures or with lots of EMI. But for hobbyist use its essentially get the right trace width for the PCB material using an online impedance calculator, and then length match and match the count of vias for all your traces of the same bus and don't exceed the length restrictions. Don't forget to have a good ground plane. This will work 99% of the time.

Its time consuming and annoying but not rocket science.

jdsully··on Why SaaS prices are still going up when companies are spending less

> For US companies registered in Delaware (which is most of them), the doctrine of shareholders primacy holds. Shareholders can and have sued corporate boards/execs for not acting in their best interest. It goes back to the 1910s when Henry Ford very loudly and explicitly announced he was cutting shareholder dividends to pay workers the famous $5/day wage (double what any other factory workers were paid), and minority shareholders sued and won.

That's because he had the explicit goal of starving out the Dodge brothers who owned a competing automotive manufacturer. If it was just about the pay of employees the suit likely would have failed. You cannot prejudice minority shareholders even if they own competing companies.

jdsully··on Ham radio enthusiasts vs. High-frequency traders: A battle for the airwaves
The “or better” is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here. Your choice of counter party has a large impact on the price improvement.

The problem with conglomerates is they tend to be inefficient over the long term. They use winning businesses to subsidize losing legacy businesses that management has an attachment too. This eliminates the pressure they would normally have to fix the underperforming business and investors lose some of the benefit of the well performing business that is siphoned off.

Even tech isn’t immune to this, Amazon would be way more valuable if it split into separate retail and cloud businesses.

That is very sad to hear. It’s a shame how badly VBA was neglected and this is a poor surrogate if it won’t run local.
jdsully··on There Is No Housing Crisis
If you ever go through the process of buying vacant land you’ll find the biggest risk is whether the city will ever let you build anything on it. Even a house being there once before isn’t a guarantee. It could be the green belt, too close to an airport, or just zoned wrong.

At least in Canada land is not that scarce (even in desirable areas like the GTA) you just aren’t allowed to build on most of it.

This is why land development is so commonly associated with corruption. The best way to make money is to buy up artificially restricted land and bribe the government into letting you build.

jdsully··on Car Bloat: “Huge Cars Are Terrible for Society”
Fleet economy standards are based on the footprint of the vehicle. The bigger it is the lower the MPG has to be. It’s an unintended side effect of regulation.
jdsully··on JPMorgan Chase now says a recession looks unlikely
The downgrade is related to US debt not the economy as a whole. Parts of the economy can have trouble without having a recession.
jdsully··on Charger outages leave northern Ontario EV drivers stranded

jdsully··on Ford to lay off workers as it focuses on electric vehicles
Ford Credit (loans to purchasers of their vehicles) is on Ford's balance sheet while the others had to spin off those businesses in '08. So the debt situation is a bit misleading if you just compare the top level numbers to industry peers.

jdsully··on LMDB: The first version of Redis, written in Tcl (2009)
Sorry it didn't work well for you. In the 6.3 release we tried to pack in too much although we've ironed out most of the issues. The hardest change has been moving away from fork() for background saving which has historically caused a lot of pain for running it in production and makes it difficult to do persistence.

I definitely would have paced things out better if I could go back in time.
