jdsully··on Malloc() and free() are a bad API (2022)
If you want a mallet you should be using a sledgehammer. Though other smaller hammers can be useful.
jdsully··on OpenAI and Microsoft Azure to deprecate GPT-4 32K
4o is pretty bad in my experience. They shouldn't have used the "4.0" naming for it or said its Lite or something. Instead they are trying to market it as roughly equivalent which it definitely is not.
jdsully··on DAK Industries Catalog, Early Fall 1985
I was into it in the 90s, it was really fun to build your system. You'd dream of how much better it would be with a 3-way crossover or even just that equalizer and it did make a big difference sometimes.

Tighter integration killed it mostly. Integrated amplifiers in speakers and your audio source already has an EQ and everything else you'd want all in one unit kinda takes the fun out of it.

jdsully··on Hospitals that make profits should pay taxes
Healthcare has a cartel restricting supply of new doctors, and new hospitals. Only a small number of new doctors can intern each year ensuring the relative supply decreases vs population. The same for hospitals - even if you have the money and the doctors you can't open one unless the other hospitals in the area agree one is needed and allow you to get a “Certificate of Need”.

But that wasn't enough to juice profits so pricing had to be made as opaque as possible to screw over anyone who isn't a giant insurance company ensuring the little guy without insurance who "pays his bills" pays more than 10x anyone else in the system.

I don't know of any other industry with this level of depravity and greed.

Switches are crazy expensive but optics are easily available... here's a 400G for less than $500

https://www.fs.com/products/110530.html

200G switches are about the cost of a small car, but if your buying this thing that is probably not a showstopper:

> usually obscenely high due to other regulatory and contractual reasons related to the negotiation process

Lets be real its due to greed nothing else.

jdsully··on Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS Zero-Day Exploitation
Just buy a lab unit from CDW. The American website annoyingly has a "call us" for pricing but a PA-440 is $979 CAD for comparison.

jdsully··on NYC Rat Sightings (Daily)
One week of your garbage not getting picked up will change your behaviour.
jdsully··on The simple beauty of XOR floating point compression
How many homes have fibre runs everywhere. Most homes don't even have cat-5
jdsully··on Stack Overflow is documentation, not Q&A
All I see everywhere is autogenerated docs with function prototypes I could have just looked at in the code. Nobody is explaining the "why" anymore.
jdsully··on Do You Need IPv4 Anymore?
They asked for it and at that time you didn’t really need to justify it.

jdsully··on Datacenter Processors for AI is already 78% of Nvidia's Revenue
Cisco was a very similar situation actually. Lots of "routers" out there (way more than other brands making GPUs), but the cisco stuff just "worked" in corporate environments and had the best interop with the rest of the network.

Ultimately though people figured out the other stuff and while cisco is still very popular for core routers they are no longer the only reasonable option.

The stock has only just now recovered 25 years later from the .com crash.

jdsully··on Infinite Mac: Turning to the dark side
75Mhz PPC could just barely handle it.
jdsully··on Microsoft has a new Windows and Surface chief
Windows has been rudderless since Sinofsky lost the power struggle and retired. It was true the rest of the company needed to be freed from the tyranny of the windows org but we threw the baby out with the bathwater, and since then windows has been victim to the whims of the services.

Hopefully the new chief can put some spine back in and start saying no to things that are bad for the product.

jdsully··on Microsoft has a new Windows and Surface chief
Having been a victim of win RT and other "modern" windows APIs the simple truth is the old stuff actually works and the new stuff is crap and gets deprecated after nobody adopts it.
jdsully··on China blocks use of Intel and AMD chips in government computers: Report
The USSR had the same strategy. It didn't work back then because the goal posts moved faster than they could march toward them.
jdsully··on The IRS Has an Answer to TurboTax
Its not possible for the IRS to auto create a return for you from your bank statements full stop. The idea is flawed.

Surveys show as much as half of workers make money outside normal employment so this is not some obscure side effect but the common case.

jdsully··on The IRS Has an Answer to TurboTax
Banks don't report every transaction and even if they did it may not be "income". E.g. moving money from one account to another is a transaction but no income was earned and it is not taxable.
jdsully··on Why the 2% inflation target? (2023)
I pay $1 to buy an apple and eat it. It is gone and tomorrow I will have no Apples unless I buy more. Instead I buy (invest in) an apple tree and now I have apples continuously.

The difference is the spending for a one time use vs production of new goods.

jdsully··on Why the 2% inflation target? (2023)
Defalation has more risk of feedback spirals, it heavily incentives you to wait to invest as tomorrow it will be cheaper than today. This is why small positive inflation rates are preferred. You could target 0% but in practice you will oscillate around it and have potentially long periods of deflation.
jdsully··on Intel puts 1nm process (10A) on the roadmap for 2027
They were generally paid cafeterias though.
jdsully··on Apollo calls AI a 'bubble' worse than even the dotcom era
When comparing to .com the fortunes of Cisco, Sun, and 3COM are really the comparables to Nvidia. Their hardware got commoditized and their valuations went back to reality. Cisco still has not hit their .com peak 25 years later.
jdsully··on Ottawa to create regulator to hold platforms accountable for harmful content
Because its sidestepping this market and using force instead of argumentation.
jdsully··on Ask HN: How to Overcome the Trough of Sorrow?
Don't get married to a project. If you don't get traction you should do something else. Business is ultimately about serving customers not about building the thing you want to build. If the customers won't buy it then its not fit for purpose. The exact time you should spend before pivoting isn't hard and fast but 4 years is well into the "its not working out" territory.
jdsully··on Ask HN: Do LLMs get "better" with more processing power and or time per request?
For inference the common answer will be "no", you use the model you get and it takes a constant time to process.

However the truth is that inference platforms do take shortcuts that affect accuracy. E.g. LLama.cpp will down convert fp32 intermediates to 8-bit quantized so it can do the work using 8-bit integers. This is degrading the computation's accuracy for performance.

jdsully··on The mystery of the garage
The garage was a story of economic mobility for the middle class. It was never aimed at people in abject poverty. There were stories about going from troubled neighborhoods to college as well during the time when America still believed in class mobility.

The world of the 1800s was a world of hereditary title. There was never a promise of mobility and this is what made America and its legends different for all its failings. Going back to this world will not improve things for the better.

jdsully··on Mixed Reality gone in Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26052
The old Microsoft wasn't so myopic which resulted in not one but two of the biggest software dynasties with windows and office and in more recent times Azure.

You can't get a winner if you leave the game early.
