jdright··on Boeing workers vote to strike
This is just malicious. Boing is the exemplar capitalist enterprise, traded, where the sole objective is profit above everything else, including safety and following regulations obligations, something that they can do because they bought politicians (lobby aka legal corruption).
jdright··on Zngur: A C++/Rust interop tool
This is insane.

Is this being used in some codebase? How stable is it? What are the plans for it?

I have so many questions, but will stick with these for now.

I didn't find anything useful related to networked games when looking for "David Lamparter". Now, try yourself quick look for "Glenn Fiedler".

Note that MobyGames is wildly incomplete.

> the real mystery is how a single guy working alone could come up with all this in just a few days

Really not a mystery. This is not that complex for people with low level programming experience (embedded, (older) games, demoscene, performance systems, etc.).

Knowing these tricks and knowing how to apply them is basically a requirement on these areas.

not sure what he means by columns either. but split view on dolphin exists for many years already.
jdright··on The Mana World Classic – Open-Source MMORPG
Not really. Hard to find any decent open source game unfortunately, but also lost interest in using my day job also as a hobby and focused on other kind of software to help when possible.

I had similar experience with TMW. Tried to contribute with a new system in the game, made proposals and first draft implementation. I had 10 years of professional AAA gamedev at the time... I was mocked and kinda bullied.

Never looked back to this project, but explains why this project is basically stuck at the same place as before.

In any case, I didn't let this bad experience affect my passion for foss and I continued contributing to more welcoming and successful projects.

"But I think this borders on the alarmist: "It's worse with video, where switching away from Media Center PC might cost you the footage of your son's first steps, your sister's wedding, your holiday films."

Even the darkest tinfoil-hat conspiracy theorists don't suggest that Microsoft is going to hold my WMV-encoded home videos hostage. But you seem to be taking it even further, somehow tying it to the Media Center itself. Please explain.

same on my end, the biggest issue sometimes is finding the correct torch/torchvision version that go with different projects as AMD users are still rare. So, the problem is still the AMD ecosystem is pretty niche and will be pretty stable unless you pick a dev or wrong version, then it may happen to cause kernel panics! In any case, things looks to be improving, but rocm has a lot to support (xformers and other core ML libraries)

jdright··on NSO group iPhone zero-click, zero-day exploit captured in the wild
it is not that simple, but the scale and impact is different too. You wouldn't download a car, would you?
jdright··on NSO group iPhone zero-click, zero-day exploit captured in the wild
That is the problem, we are not cohesive enough in shaming these people. They are criminals, and criminals don't post openly on linkedin proud of their work.
jdright··on NSO group iPhone zero-click, zero-day exploit captured in the wild
Not entirely true because NSO (or their clients) have very specific target requeriments. If they want to target another Jamal Khashoggi and lockdown mode is used, they have their incentive to buy and create the demand for any 0day that they can then re-sell to their lovelly clients. No need statistics for this, the incentive is purely greed.

You all forget about all the telemetry, which most decent games from the last 5 years have. It is fact of life that they collect all kinds of data to understand better their user base and game usage for future improvements.

jdright··on Meta fires a software engineer two days after he relocated from India to Canada
I was dumb 20 years ago where I thought exactly like you. Also, this kind of thinking is generally coming from people with lack of self-confidence.

I've been on both sides of this, and I saw in the last 20 years and continue to see how this works. Now, I'm on the hiring side for the last 7 years, and there is no way this push down wages, in fact it is exactly the opposite, this pushes wages up. I prefer pay more to bring someone very good, than pay half to have someone semi competent. If I restrict my hiring locally, I'll mostly get low quality workers, the market is satured of low quality which will push wages down, the very good ones are very difficult to hire.
