jdnenej··on How many jobs can be done at home? [pdf]
I'm surprised so many people here don't have a desk/keyboard/mouse/multi monitor at home as well. I thought that was a pretty common setup.
jdnenej··on Costco will not allow returns on high-demand items like toilet paper, water
I think it started in china/Japan, hit Australia a month later and now has become almost global.
jdnenej··on Netflix to cut streaming quality in Europe for 30 days
It's more than that, Edge has far more DRM in it.
jdnenej··on Open letter from Italy to the international scientific community
The difference is china could have contained it with minimal disruption. The only option italy had was to shut down all borders for the next 6 months.
jdnenej··on United Kingdom to introduce security labelling on connected devices
Why even allow the sale in the first place. We don't allow the sale of faulty seat belts and say "well the consumer knew when they got it"
jdnenej··on United Kingdom to introduce security labelling on connected devices
Because technology progresses faster than laws and by the time the laws catch up there are already powerful corporations established based on the lack of those laws.

For example its an obvious public and environmental benefit to require that all phones have a user replaceable battery but until recently they almost all did and now it's too late because every phone maker would lobby against it.

jdnenej··on Haven: turn old Android phones into security cameras
It's not difficult to fix. It's just that corporations want you to throw out and buy a new phone every year. This is what happens when you let the same company make the software and the hardware.
jdnenej··on Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080, RTX 3070 Leaked Specs: Up to 20GB GDDR6 RAM
Good VR is absolutely worth it. After getting a VR setup I haven't touched a single none VR game. I recently upgraded to a rx 5700xt and love it.
jdnenej··on Climate threats now dominate long-term risks, survey of global leaders finds
For the last point I saw that to heat the oceans as fast as we are it would take a nuclear bomb worth of energy set off every second for the last few decades.
jdnenej··on Climate threats now dominate long-term risks, survey of global leaders finds
Literally anyone who lives in the bay area has a choice to live somewhere else or work remote.

It's a copypasta. OP didn't make up the number 2 but I'm guessing it comes down to 2 being a tolerable number to most people.
jdnenej··on We’re approaching the limits of computer power – we need new programmers
I doubt it. My new gpu released in 2019 is 3x as powerful as my 2013 gpu but the new CPUs are mostly only improved in core counts.

Rendering is also an insanly parallelizable task. In the worst case we can always slap 2 of the same gpu on one card and get them to render half the screen or for vr, one gpu per eye.

jdnenej··on Climate threats now dominate long-term risks, survey of global leaders finds
It seems that people seriously struggle to understand how significant a single degree change in average temperature is.
jdnenej··on Climate threats now dominate long-term risks, survey of global leaders finds
It would be cool but they haven't done it and we don't have time to sit and wait. If we start self enforcing these rules on ourself then when it comes to election time people will be more open to voting for a government that does this.

Australia had the hottest year on record in 2019 as well as breaking the hottest day on record multiple times in the same week
jdnenej··on We’re approaching the limits of computer power – we need new programmers
I'm doing VR on a 6 year old i7 and it runs perfectly fine. Improvements come almost entirely from updating the gpu

How is google docs a terrible word editor? Do you mean that it lacking the advanced but rarely used features of word?
jdnenej··on Goodbye, Clean Code
This is how some humans work. No one on my current team has ever expressed disatisfaction when their code gets changed.
jdnenej··on Goodbye, Clean Code
Every time I have seen a feature that was written general to handle possible future uses, after a year of sitting unused there will certainly be modifications or surrounding code that doesn't support the planned extensibility. So it can never be used without a lot of work changing things anyway.
jdnenej··on Comma Two Devkit
The comment points out the rediclousness of the parent comment stating that you either pay $500 for medication or get run over by diy cars.
jdnenej··on EA is permanently banning Linux players on Battlefield V
Vote kicks rarely seen to work because the rest of the players don't know what is going on. A vote starts and you think "wait what, what did they do" even if someone says "they were cheating" most people playing wouldn't have seen it and have no idea if this is true.
jdnenej··on EA is permanently banning Linux players on Battlefield V
Also virtually all cheaters will try to claim that they did nothing and the system just failed.
jdnenej··on What are those grids of glass in the sidewalk and why are they purple?
I had no idea these were an actual thing. I just figured it was some whacky street decoration. The ones in Adelaide, Australia are mostly cracked and ruined and seem to be filled in with concrete when they break. I wonder if everyone decided it's easier to use electricity for lighting now.
jdnenej··on Wildfires Are Raging Outside Every Major City in Australia
The policies have not changed. The fire department has said the weather has been too dry for too long and they are unable to do controlled burns like they used to.
jdnenej··on Wildfires Are Raging Outside Every Major City in Australia
The solution is obviously to punish and prevent all crimes even if none of them individually have much of an impact.
jdnenej··on Libcamera – A complex camera support library for Linux, Android, and ChromeOS
Because all or nothing forces someone to compromise. By default almost all vendors would pick to keep things proprietary. If going open source is the only possible option then some vendors will release the source and if they don't then hobbyists will write their own drivers since the work is very useful.

Wikipedia faced a similar issue when considering using https everywhere. Some countries were blocking certain pages on Wikipedia and https would break that so it was uncertain if they would just block the whole of Wikipedia now. As it turns out they mostly did not block the whole website and those selected pages became unblocked because the alternative was given by the all or nothing approach was too far.

jdnenej··on Using an /e/ phone as a desktop or laptop
No, if you restore the factory OS and the problem persists then in most countries your warrenty is not void. The company has to prove that the custom OS is the issue and if it is no longer installed then it can't be the issue.
jdnenej··on Using an /e/ phone as a desktop or laptop
The efuse doesn't actually do anything last time I checked. It just pops when you root.
jdnenej··on Using an /e/ phone as a desktop or laptop
Flash is long dead and gone. Chrome OS probably also doesnt support floppy disk's.
jdnenej··on McDonald's holds communities together (2016)
Last time I went to the counter an employee said "let me serve you from here(the self serve)" at that point they are just educating you on how to order yourself next time.
