jdiff··on Why Is Sam Altman a Free Man?
Everything goes into the training data. What is prioritized and what behavior is targeted out of that data is something that comes from OpenAI.
jdiff··on Nvidia wants to put a watchdog chip next to every AI agent
It's perfectly reasonable to think less of an individual who is so sheltered that they are incapable of caring for themselves. Whether it's your mother or your maid doing your laundry and cooking your meals for you.

jdiff··on Spain orders blocks on Archive.today and its mirrors
Archive.org is not archive.today.
jdiff··on ChatGPT now knows what you do on other websites via ad collector
In an embarrassing display, the manager over my arm of the company got told off by his manager for spamming him (and clients) with AI slop emails. And then was told by one of the regional managers for using Copilot generating a bunch of client-facing posters and images with phrasing that had not passed any sort of legal or basic fact checking.

The people going all in on it don't realize the downsides, limitations, or understand how they come off to other people with it all.

jdiff··on What happened to the Snowden archive
It's really never been the worst thing. From MKUltra to Operation Sea-Spray and many, many more.
jdiff··on The LLMentalist Effect (2023)
Superhuman abilities are not "intelligence." 8bit microprocessors exhibit superhuman abilities in different, smaller ways.
jdiff··on Chat-based Large Language Models replicate the mechanisms of a psychic's con
I haven't seen any statements from them on that topic. Have they actually made some?
jdiff··on Astra for Law
So those lawyers will likely want to know about the likeliness of it, strategies to work around it, and overall mitigations.

It might be helpful if the company launching this product included such information in their blog post instead of ignoring it in a field with such a high cost of getting it wrong.

jdiff··on Astra for Law
The blog post makes no mention. If the rate isn't 0% it should be mentioned for a field like this.
jdiff··on I Don't Like LLMs
Much advice is meaningless, baseless post-mortem correlations from people trying to justify their own success.
jdiff··on GLM Built Its Own Inference Infrastructure
Nah, they're fine making that small leap. RSI is the new marketing term for the sci fi singularity.
jdiff··on GLM Built Its Own Inference Infrastructure
This introduces other incentives to cut corners and over-quantize.
jdiff··on Cartesian – AI 3D Modeling for Design
They're saying it as if it were contrary to what's being claimed. The tagline says "for architecture and product design." The supported file formats are not video game formats.
jdiff··on Show HN: An e-ink frame that hears birds and draws them as 1800s illustrations
What is "the new one"? The old one used AI, and this one seems to as well.
jdiff··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
You can convict a human. What do you do when your LLM blows all your money on paperclips?
jdiff··on What will our economic future look like?
Hm, also not responding here. I don't think this thread is well-trafficked enough to have hugged it to death, but here's a PDF alternative link: https://milweesci.weebly.com/uploads/1/3/2/4/13247648/mannap...
jdiff··on What will our economic future look like?
Marshall Brain really nailed it back in 2003 with Manna. https://marshallbrain.com/manna1

AI leaves humans as the limbs of the machine, with less and less thinking or comprehension required on their part.

jdiff··on Trusting-Trust Attack against an Entire Linux Distribution
Absolutely true, but even tentacles and eyes will struggle to fit in a system compact enough. Even on larger systems, there is an upper limit on how many tentacles you can cram in something before you can't continue the facade that there are none. And an upper limit on how esoteric the tentacle is before it stops being worth it.
jdiff··on LibreOffice breaks download records after declaring it has no AI features
Didn't people find it bundled with a bunch of other things in a single runtime? Downloaded as part of a whole runtime would suggest it wasn't downloaded directly from the source.
jdiff··on LibreOffice breaks download records after declaring it has no AI features
Not really. One entity embedding the software into another will only account for at most a handful of downloads.
jdiff··on Trusting-Trust Attack against an Entire Linux Distribution
This automated analyst isn't going to be able to run usefully on hardware that is still otherwise useful, giving you a clear path to choke it out or identify its presence when your hello world is taking 3 months to finish compiling.
jdiff··on Trusting-Trust Attack against an Entire Linux Distribution
Break expectations. Bootstrap it through an esoteric-enough system. Write an Uxn emulator in assembly targeting the cushy environment that UEFI has and you've got a system with graphics, a text editor, a spreadsheet editor, an assembler, games, and maybe even more. I have a Z80-powered email appliance that can be loaded with programs from a connected device. Whoever is breaking my trust in trust surely won't have planned for that.
jdiff··on Smartphone makers don't bother to comply with EU repairability requirements
Minors were involved. People were responding to pictures of minors and prompting Grok to sexualize them. People were uploading their own photos of real minors and asking Grok to make modifications to them.
jdiff··on Cloud in a Bottle: making self-hosting accessible to everyone
This is Zack.
jdiff··on Show HN: TERMy – A fast terminal assistant that does not use LLMs
That's reproducible, I wouldn't call it deterministic. Small, semantically meaningless changes in the input can still result in wildly different output.
jdiff··on Sony makes bold claim about game ownership
Yeah. But we're talking about software licenses here. It was more weird hunting and drivers licenses ever got brought up.
jdiff··on Ask HN: Why were OpenAI, Claude, and Grok simultaneously down?
You did this when you ran into an issue with a third party. The developers building this tool, throwing them at their own APIs are significantly less likely to run into a similar issue that may inspire similar action.
jdiff··on Sony makes bold claim about game ownership
Software licenses are bought all the time.
