jdavis703··on FAA investigating how counterfeit titanium got into Boeing and Airbus jets
Spirit believed it was buying a specific, certified titanium alloy.

Imagine the rabbis at Hebrew National were out sick, but Hebrew National continued churning out “Kosher hotdogs” that hadn’t been properly vetted.

Sure it’s still a hotdog made with kosher ingredients. But it’s a major violation of trust. And trust is what consumers expect when flying.

jdavis703··on Air Purifier vs. Positive Pressure Fresh Air System – An Unfair Battle?
My experience from west coast wildfires and taking indoor air pollution measurements is if I put 3 air purifiers in one master bedroom and keep the windows and doors closed I can go from code purple air outside to code orange air inside… So it’s not perfect, but it does kind of work if you’re in a situation where you can’t integrate a positive air pressure system.
jdavis703··on 12 horses die from injuries over the past month at Churchill Downs
Yes, 22 horses died at Berkeley in 2020. Several hundred workers also came down with COVID during that time. The sport is hard on labor and horses.
jdavis703··on Why are there no antitrust claims vs. GitHub Copilot, when there is a precedent?
Has anyone just requested access to GitHub’s training data? In other words, maybe GitHub will send a drive with all the data.
jdavis703··on FCC orders phone companies to block scam text messages
Yes, as someone who has done volunteer telemarketing, we mark the call status. For example if you’re angry/rude, non-English speaking, disconnected, etc. Campaign managers can then target call sheets accordingly (e.g. for a Spanish-speaking line, have the Spanish team do a follow up call).
jdavis703··on No more airplane mode? EU to allow calls on flights
The “quiet car” on medium-haul passenger rail routes (e.g. Acela in the US.) or a sleeper car on long-haul rail or a first class “private room” on airlines like Emirates.
jdavis703··on Ask HN: How do you start a startup in your 30s when you have wife/kids/mortgage?
> I have a well paying job now, and I am pretty sure I would throw my marriage into chaos if I told my wife I was leaving my job to pursue a start up.

This is a conversation you should have with your spouse. Many spouses go back to school or pursue a financially risky entrepreneurial path. The other spouse supports the family. I've also seen this blow up, as the fiancee/spouse that supported the partner gets dumped after shortly after success... If you do this, I strongly encourage you to offer your spouse a generous postnuptial agreement (i.e. more than CA family law defaults to.)

jdavis703··on Potential Issues of Using a USB Powerbank as a UPS (2021)
In London security will sometimes specifically ask if you or anyone else has made repairs or modifications to any electronics. Depending on how honestly you answer, this could still be a hassle.
jdavis703··on Why are McDonald’s Self Service Kiosks so hackable?
I have seen legacy companies with security rules so tight they can’t ship anything cool. On the flip side are legacy companies that ship great user experiences, but apparently just totally ignore the security people. Does the security professions have a “human centric security design” capability? It’s something the non-tech Fortune 500s to desperately need.
jdavis703··on Nikon to stop making SLR cameras and focus on mirrorless models?
I have the latest iPhone 13 Pro Max, shoot RAW and with acoustic filters mounted on my phone and what not. Both my photos and iPhone photos that I’ve seen at “iPhone photography” art exhibits are clearly lower quality.

Now one could argue about whether the tiny censors on smartphones in of itself is just another dimension of artistic expression.

But my personal aesthetic preference as a hobbyist photographer and art consumer is that unintentional censor noise is not good.

jdavis703··on Dems propose raising taxes on couples making more than $500k
I don’t consider myself wealthy, and I make less than half that… But I’m also not poor. I have no problem chipping in or 1 or 2 percent more if it means keeping the masses from revolution… As happened to my step mom’s parents in the Chinese cultural revolution.
jdavis703··on Police Can Trace Cameras Thanks to Sensor Imperfection ‘Fingerprints’
Yes, but it sounds like forensic researchers envision this tool being the equivalent to bullet striation. So in other words, law enforcement finds a suspect, captures their camera, photographs RAW images, and then compares the sensor imperfections in the seized camera to known illicit materials.

Of course this breaks down with used sales and camera rentals, especially since those aren’t tracked as intensively as firearms sales.

jdavis703··on OneTrust lays off 25% Workforce
Most of these jobs hire software engineers, not programmers. The job is more than coding.

Software engineering is writing technical design docs. Gathering business requirements. Gathering technical requirements. Negotiating with stakeholders like InfoSec, legal and accounting. Discussing user research and new features with UX practitioners. Etc.

jdavis703··on We don't show typing status
IME many large, non-tech companies are so bureaucratic they essentially have an async flow. Which perhaps is fine, there’s already a defined process for what needs to be done. But for a startup where even the next two weeks are foggy, async work can be detrimental.
jdavis703··on The Collison Brothers Built Stripe into a $95B Unicorn
What is the board supposed to do then? Dilute Bezo’s and everyone else’s holdings?
jdavis703··on S.F. population fell 6.3%, most in nation, to lowest level since 2010
Rents are up 15% YoY, which is probably a leading sign that demand is back. I know some folks might blame higher rents on greedy landlords… But it’s quite clear that at work this year’s class of new grad hires is moving to the Bay Area.

What I think we saw is people left SF because there’s no point in doing remote work from a cramped, expensive apartment. So yes, it was a vote on governance. But for all SF’s problems it’s more nuanced than “people are fleeing a sh*t-hole city.”

(And even funnier, I live in Oakland. There was a noticeable surge in people parking bikes with Caltrain tags in the bike room. I’m back to being the only bike with a Caltrain tag now.)

jdavis703··on The Collison Brothers Built Stripe into a $95B Unicorn
The CEO of Amazon has a $212mm compensation package. That’s what I based my estimate off. And I’m sure we can all agree that $212mm is more than “hardly any salary.” I could retire on that amount, have my alma matter name a building after me and still have more money than I know what to do with.
jdavis703··on The Collison Brothers Built Stripe into a $95B Unicorn
If Amazon’s board decided to reallocate the CEO’s compensation package and grant it to employees, it would increase the entry level salaries of warehouse workers from $18/hour to $18.45/hour.

Not a bad bump, but also historically low by Amazon pay bumps. But it’s also not going to solve income inequality… And very likely there are few people qualified to be CEO of Amazon who’d do the job for $18.45/hour.

jdavis703··on Taking a break from social media makes you happier and less anxious
My Twitter feed is basically the news. The first 4 of 5 posts are from established news organizations or about current events. Social media vs news media is a distinction without a difference.
jdavis703··on Jabra denies support for Elite 85t Bluetooth earbuds on computers
I don’t trust Bluetooth for video conferencing. Having everything hard-wired is much more reliable. It’s why work from home video conferences are janky in a way that in-office VCs weren’t. If you can get a dedicated microphone or webcam and combine it with wired headphones or speakers.
jdavis703··on Twitter CEO fires two top executives, freezes hiring
Many states in the US have family leave (including paternity leave). California is more than 10% of the US population and the rules for paternity leave are extremely broad:

- Welcomed a new child into the family in the past 12 months through birth.

- Paid into State Disability Insurance (noted as "CASDI" on most paystubs) in the past 5 to 18 months.

- Not taken the maximum eight weeks of PFL in the past 12 months

Insinuating that 99% of the US lacks paternity leave is disingenuous.

jdavis703··on When negotiating a price, never bid with a round number (2016)
The answer is to make it clear what the tradeoffs are. For example it could be more cash and less stock. Or lower price but longer lead time. Just offering a range without any other variables would be foolish, and complicated negotiations usually have more factors than just price.
jdavis703··on Boeing looked for flaws in its Dreamliner and couldn’t stop finding them
I’m not expert enough to know if this is dangerous are not. But an aircraft is a combinatorial explosion of complexity. For example, innocuous sounding changes for the 737 Max caused several hundred deaths.

If the tolerance was indeed too strict I would expect Boeing to go through a engineering review and seek approval from the FAA.

People who work on assembly lines are really good at keeping the line moving. But I don’t want someone who’s perf bonus relies on pushing out aircraft determining on-the-fly if something that’s outside of the spec is safe or not…

And this isn’t a knock on blue collar labor, almost no one at Boeing has the knowledge to work through all the potential side effects like this.

jdavis703··on Why Pessimism Sounds Smart
I’m not sure. We’re on a hedonistic treadmill. Yesterday’s inventions are todays problems.

It’s easy to look at polluting transportation, addictive social media or unhealthy processed foods and extrapolate that the future will be worse.

But I believe someone in the 19th century would see a F-150; near real time, global news; and tasty, semi-nutritious food that’s shelf stable for years as amazing!

jdavis703··on Hacker News Guidelines
I don’t want your limit for “sizable” is, but yes, but they’re semi-hidden on places like Slack, Reddit and Discord.
jdavis703··on Ask HN: What’s a good laptop for software development at around $2k?
Sounds like the poster is having power management issues. Could be a dirty fan or a bad chip. I’ve dealt with the latter and it was fixed under warranty.
jdavis703··on I Bond’s variable rate will rise to 9.62% with the May reset
Are you using ad blockers, tracking protection or enhanced browser security? Consider using a stock Google Chrome installation from a desktop computer.

I’m not defending the “good enough for government” mentality but merely suggesting some workarounds (FWIW it works on my computer.)

jdavis703··on Top Mac app store dev abuses free with in-app purchase for bait-and-switch apps
Sure I’d have liked all these features on March 2020. But at least where I live the pandemic is still very much raging on. We still have mask mandates and vaccine passport checks. Having masked FaceID and vaccine passports in the wallet still makes daily life better.

And also, the pulse oximeter helps build a better image of overall cardiovascular fitness (basically they can estimate VO2 max). This is important for keeping the body in shape to fight off SARS-2 and whatever comes next (people with cardiovascular problems were more likely to die or be hospitalized.)

jdavis703··on Intuit asked Mailchimp employees to pay medical costs out of pocket
> The employees Business Insider spoke with said they would be covered retroactively only once the paperwork was finalized, which left them on the hook to pay upfront fees.

This seems like many responses on HN are over reacting. Employees are not on the hook for previously insured medical expenses.

Almost all medical offices are happy to work with patients if the situation is explained before hand. For example my HMO has printed signs at every intake counter reading “Can’t pay? Call this number to discuss payment options.”

This situation sucks, but it’s really not much different from forgetting your insurance number and needing the front desk to front you the copay or deductible.

jdavis703··on Is my advice too mercenary?
As people age they do get “free” insurance from Medicare. And if a white collar worker experiences downward mobility they can qualify for free or cheap insurance through the Medicaid and Affordable Care Act provisions.
