jd_mongodb··on Michael Cahill Talks about the Wired Tiger Storage Engine
Michael Cahill, who designed the Postgres SSI mechanisms talks about the underlying storage engine for MongoDB, WiredTiger, which he helped design.
jd_mongodb··on Ask HN: How do hackers hack MongoDB instances?
We really discourage people doing this, there are so many potential attack vectors. If you want a secure test cluster we provide a free tier in MongoDB Atlas which serves many people's low end needs and doesn't expose all the attack vectors associated with an EC2 instance. Easier to manage and more secure to boot.

See https://www.mongodb.com/cloud/atlas/register2 to sign up.

jd_mongodb··on I must announce the immediate end of service of SSLPing
Ping me at Joe.Drumgoole@mongodb.com and I can organise payment of all those costs if you want to continue.
jd_mongodb··on Ask HN: Why aren't there any real alternatives to Electron?
I have it on good authority from the MongoDB Compass product manager that latest versions of Compass load in around 5 seconds :-) Still an Electron app.

I'm not sure "struggled to pass" is the right characterisation. The Jepsen tests are part of the MongoDB test suite. They have found some bugs in the past and we have fixed them and incorporated into our test suite. Am I about to say Jepsen will never find another bug in MongoDB? No. But if they do we will fix those as well.
jd_mongodb··on Why Don't You Use
Haha, not many people say that to me at MongoDB :-) Early adopters are, I guess, revolutionaries with all that that entails.
jd_mongodb··on Why Don't You Use
MongoDB Zealots I hear you say? Wherefore art these zealots? I watch social media for MongoDB on a regular basis and I can't say I have come across much zealotry in the last 8 years :-)

Most of our customers are reasonable rational people who use MongoDB alongside a collection of other database technologies.

Personally as someone who has worked in pre-sales and more recently developer relations, at MongoDB I find our customers and users are suspicious of zealots.

jd_mongodb··on Launch HN: Hydra (YC W22) – Query any database via Postgres
Aggregations by their nature are designed to work on a substantial footprint of data. As a result changing the query model is unlikely to speed up the operation of aggregation. In fact, as most of these libraries require the data to be shipped to the client (whereas aggregation queries run on the server) you will likely see substantially reduced performance.
jd_mongodb··on MongoDB Atlas Down?
MongoDB Atlas status is always available here http://status.mongodb.com/. Atlas is currently up.

You should ask your question in the mongodb community at http://mongodb.com/community/forums

jd_mongodb··on Ask HN: Do you find working on large distributed systems exhausting?
MongoDB uses the Wired Tiger storage engine internally. The MMAP storage engine was removed from MongoDB in V4.2 which was released in March 2020. The MMAP engine was deprecated two years previously.

In MongoDB conversion to and from raw JSON into BSON (Binary JSON) is done on the client (aka driver) so the server cycles are not consumed.

jd_mongodb··on Show HN: EdgeDB 1.0
MongoDB $graphLookup might do what you want.

From the docs:

Performs a recursive search on a collection, with options for restricting the search by recursion depth and query filter.

jd_mongodb··on HN ran on a single box in 2018 has anything changed?
What version of MongoDB are you running? The mainstream MongoDB storage engine (WiredTiger) only supports 64bit systems.

jd_mongodb··on Why I Enjoy PostgreSQL – Infrastructure Engineer's Perspective
No worries. We have improved over the years. I joined 8 years ago and it is a very different product today. Appreciate your comments.
jd_mongodb··on Why I Enjoy PostgreSQL – Infrastructure Engineer's Perspective
Countless port-mortems or the same post-mortem recounted over and over?

As an employee of MongoDB we treat "catastrophic" failures of our software pretty seriously. If you have experienced a failure we want to hear about. Paying customer or no...

jd_mongodb··on How and why the Relational Model works for databases
Your comment that "fewer and fewer treat it as their go-to database nowadays" seems odd given the continued growth of MongoDB.

jd_mongodb··on Why I Enjoy PostgreSQL – Infrastructure Engineer's Perspective
MongoDB is ACID compliant. Yes, I know someone will post the 18 month old Jepsen report, but the fact is those issues were fixed almost immediately. The Jepsen test suite continues to be part of MongoDB's release testing.
jd_mongodb··on 2021 in Database Startups: Gold Rush
MongoDB 1.0 was released in 2009. ClusterPoint seems to have launched several years later. https://www.mongodb.com/blog/post/10-ga-released. MongoDB the company was founded in 2007.

MongoDB Cloud and Support: Cluster connectivity issues in some regions. Login buttons greyed out. Resolved - This incident has been resolved. Dec 15, 16:38 UTC Monitoring - A fix has been implemented and we are monitoring the results. Dec 15, 16:28 UTC Update - Atlas clusters in AWS regions us-west-1, us-west-2, and us-govwest-1 may have connectivity issues internally as well as with their applications. jd_mongodb··on UniFi Network Application 6.5.54
It's using the WiredTiger storage engine which has good crash recovery support. How does the crash present?
jd_mongodb··on UniFi Network Application 6.5.54
Can you share the command line and/or the config you use to start up. We don't support any single node use of MongoDB in production BTW. It can't recover as you have found out...
jd_mongodb··on UniFi Network Application 6.5.54
Which package? Are you running a replica set or a single node? What specific version? Also which storage engine?

3.0 is a pretty old version. Most 3.x versions are end of life or unsupported.

jd_mongodb··on UniFi Network Application 6.5.54
I would be curious to learn more about your setup. MongoDB should be able to recover in these situations...
