jd24··on A Japanese glossary of chopsticks faux pas (2022)
You do NOT want to use the opposite side of the chopstick. If you use chopsticks correctly, you shouldn't be touching other food you don't intend to take. Also if you are with company that you're close with people care less about you touching the food, but otherwise you'll want to use a serving utensil.
jd24··on CIA to Sunset the World Factbook
I agree. People use "soft power" as the reason the US should do so many things for free, but the benefits aren't coming back to the US.
jd24··on Late night pizzeria nearby The Pentagon has suddenly surged in traffic
They probably don't care. By the time the pizza signal was out, the operation is over and the dude was captured.
jd24··on MinIO stops distributing free Docker images
Surprised by the entitlement of some people. This was FREE labor they were providing, it was never going to last forever.
jd24··on A motto for programmers: "Tuere usorem, data, veritatem"
cringe, just use english

why would programmers be the gatekeepers of truth?

jd24··on Nintendo Switch 2 account bans continue: warning after buying old copy of Bayo 3
This is a gaming console, so for games obviously?
jd24··on DeepSeek-R1: Incentivizing Reasoning Capability in LLMs via RL
gmail works
jd24··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
How does an app like this work in the beginning when you have no/few users? Were you ranking images yourself or hire people to it?
jd24··on Chegg Is on Its Last Legs After ChatGPT Sent Its Stock Down 99%
I can't image it is worth much for training. A lot of student submissions are going to be incorrect bull or only worth partial credit at best.
jd24··on Building My Resume in HTML Using Eleventy
save yourself some time and just write your resume in a google doc and export it to whatever format you want
jd24··on 4B If Statements
> To date, I've created more than 1,000 open source projects

This dude is counting each one as a project hahaha

jd24··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
I do it sometimes when I don't feel like using my pinkies to hit shift. This happens more often on laptops where the keys are flat.
jd24··on Actors Strike Ends with a Deal That Will Impact AI and Streaming for Decades
> Writer can elect to use AI when performing writing services, if Company consents and provided writer follows applicable company policies. Company cannot require writer to use AI software (e.g., ChatGPT) when performing writing services.

Seems like a loophole: a company could increase the workload to the point GPT tools are needed and claim a writer is not performing (when compared to a writer that does use GPT).

jd24··on Bored Ape conference attendees wake up with eye pain, vision loss
Where's the yacht?
jd24··on EU tells Apple to open everything up to its rivals
Just use android if you care about things being open. Apple products are good because of the walled garden. Most people just want things to work out of the box, not to tinker with options.
jd24··on Show HN: My husband quit his job to build a new social audio app with Flutter
He should have kept his day job. What is going on with these "check in" icons on the globe? Is this just a site for people to say they're lonely? How will he monetize this site?
jd24··on Getting a job at Apple without going to college or doing LeetCode
ehh... feels like click bait. when people say "job" they generally refer to fte, not internship.
jd24··on Luck be a Landlord is now banned in 13 countries on the Google Play Store
I'd guess his app was reported by his competitors. If the author wants to make things fair he'll need to report the other apps and have them investigated under the same policies.
jd24··on Reddit subs with millions of followers plan to extend the blackout indefinitely
I'm saying it probably doesn't take much man power to moderate these subreddits as you might think. Bring in a team of 5-10 full time workers would probably be enough, tbh.
jd24··on Reddit subs with millions of followers plan to extend the blackout indefinitely
there was a stat "92 of the most 500 popular subreddits are moderated by the same 5 people"; unpaid people at that

i think they can afford to replace the mods. it'll likely be their last resort though

jd24··on MrBeast has become a viral sensation for his acts of altruism
Is it altruism or is it business expense
jd24··on ChatGPT app for iOS
Jeez, the app is impossible to find among all the fakes. I had to go to openai's website and use the link there.
jd24··on The D.E.N.N.I.S. system: Résumé tips for Senior Devs
Disagree with the latex point. If you are using latex just to put your resume together, you are wasting your time. Just do it in google docs or word. Anyone reviewing your resume won't even care unless you brought it up for some reason.
jd24··on Pause Giant AI Experiments: An Open Letter
Can't image any company actually agreeing to this. You're just signing yourself up to be 6 months behind and have your stock tank.
jd24··on Ask HN: Why do many CS graduates lack foundational knowledge?
there are plenty of talented new engineers with the knowledge you listed, but you need increase the salary if you want to attract them
jd24··on Twitter will open source all code used to recommend tweets on March 31
wtf is froth zone? it can't even handle the traffic. just link to twitter

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1636835209587949570

jd24··on LastPass says DevOps engineer’s hacked computer led to security breach in 2022
imagine trusting a company with multiple incidents with all your passwords
jd24··on MIRC ended its lifetime license agreement with all who purchased it 10 years out
Seems like a scumbag thing to be honest. You can't entice people to pay for a "lifetime" license and just take it away. Now people who expected to have lifetime access to the software need to periodically beg him through email?
jd24··on A message about Stadia and our long term streaming strategy
That's a shame, I played a few games on Stadia and thought it worked great.
jd24··on React I love you, but you're bringing me down
Depends on what you are learning for. If it is for a job, then react has the most openings by a large margin and will likely stay like that for a while.
