jcyw··on Functional core, imperative shell (2012)
The idea of functional core is cool. I find domain-driven design a better guide for implementation. In a nut shell, there are three types of objects: value, entity, and service. Both value and entity are functional and stateless objects. A service object maps between stateless objects and may cross the domain boundary (such as network, IO, etc). When I do this in java, a service object would have interfaces returning CompletableFuture of Value or Entity objects.

InfoQ has a very nice summary of DDD book: https://www.infoq.com/minibooks/download/domain-driven-desig...

jcyw··on SQL vs. NoSQL Databases: What’s the Difference?
There should be mentions about CAP theorem, and tradeoffs about consistency vs availability. Sometimes you dont care as much about CAP-consistency than availability or scalability.
jcyw··on After reading “Rails is yesterday’s software”, I need to reply
I found this equally true for the other side of argument too. Some people choose to ignore that Polymorphsim is a dynamic typed behavior. (Its general being multiple dispatch.) And the faith to compiler seems not come from the understanding of what a compiler is. The author of the original post doesnt seem to recognize Java is also a slow, interpreted language. Haha.

jcyw··on AlphaGo beats Lee Sedol 3-0 [video]
We had Godel on the limitation of logic and Turing on the limitation of computation. I think AI will only change the way human calls intelligence. We used to call people who can mentally calculate large numbers genius. Lots of that has to be re-defined.
jcyw··on Beijing is banning all foreign media from publishing online in China
Ban the sea trade and the tea. History repeats.
jcyw··on Write code that is easy to delete, not easy to extend
I stil think it would be better to guide programming using principles, not practices. To avoid fragile code, remember the open closed principle. To avoid wrong abstraction, think single responsibility and substitution principle. The author is right about interface segregation. :)

jcyw··on Chinese Markets Halted, Equities Plunge Another 7%
Interesting. Considering they stop people selling stock last time. Ha. Lets keep an eye.
jcyw··on China stock trading halted early after 7% plunge again
You have no idda how China controls media and press. Recent incident in Hong Kong revealed China abducted 5 bookstores staff because they publish book about political gossip of the communist party. Journalist and Newspaper were directly controlled by the Party in China. Media companies are required to have a Party Secretary in their board. Comparing that to Fed is vastly irrelevant.
jcyw··on China stock trading halted early after 7% plunge again
They are not lacking experience. Communist believe in centralized control, not free market.
jcyw··on Starting a tech startup with C++
The argument is you do not need a load balancer because performance of one host is good enough. But that would become a single point of failure. And thats why AWS is so awesome. Start with an autoscaling group when you create your ec2 instance, you dont really need alot configuration.
jcyw··on Starting a tech startup with C++
Its more like, with 2gb ram and 2.0ghz cpu, how many requests can you handle? Its not surprising language like C++ would win.
jcyw··on Starting a tech startup with C++
No one doubs the performance of C++. What I would really like to see is arguments about speed of development, ease of testing, etc. This articles argues alot about language features or libraries, but what about the bigger picture? It is not enough for the HTTP server be fast. It also needs to do REST API, auth, etc. How does that compare to for example node/js.

I have some good experience with qwiklab. Their self-paced lab starts with UI, then turned to aws cli. They also give a nice lesson on CF.
jcyw··on The long process of creating a Chinese font
The most well known ones would be Sung and Ming, and Ching. Emphasis are on ratio of width of horizontal or vertical strokes. And they are always sans, with little triangle at the end of strokes.
