jconley··on Men who stare at walls
This was the name of my blog, back when I wrote one. I often do that when I need to think deeply. https://blog.jdconley.com
jconley··on Ask HN: Who else is self-hosting AI and apps at home/office?
I wrote some code with an IMAP lib. Wasn't too happy with out of the box things.

The smaller Deepseek models are most interesting for self hosting LLM's at the moment. Impressive! Many other ML Things need a lot less compute, though. Like facial recognition, spam filtering, etc.

jconley··on Ask HN: Who else is self-hosting AI and apps at home/office?
awesome! how do you do email delivery? i still have to route things through an external service to get that to really work. oh yeah, i gave my son access and he hosts Rust and Minecraft servers.

i'm looking into doing security cam + AI. just canceled my Nest subscription.

jconley··on The "3 standup questions" are terrible and need to die
The standup questions are awkward motivation killers. The people that look good in those meetings are usually just pandering. I'm convinced standups have stuck around because they make managers feel like they're adding value. If people are waiting until the next workday to be unblocked your team is moving too slowly.

On the flip side having the team chat regularly is a value add. Maybe you can talk about upcoming product things, ideas people have, the market in general, and any other thoughts people have top of mind. But forcing everyone to talk about what they're working on is counter productive. Everyone on the team knows if they want to know. If there isn't team visibility to what everyone is working on then something else is broken.

jconley··on McDonald's ice cream machine hackers say they found 'smoking gun'
It seems to me that this is the risk you take when you create an unofficial add-on to any product.

I've helped reverse engineer vehicle ECU's to reprogram the fuel injection, turbo pressure, and spark timing systems. But, we wouldn't have expected the manufacturer to do anything except officially discourage the use of the aftermarket tools. That is the name of the game with unofficial add-ons with access to sensitive control systems.

Disclaimer: I did work for a Middleby subsidiary at the time but I don't know anything that isn't public about this situation. We were all very separate companies.

A 2.5% royalty will make them unprofitable? [0]

jconley··on Unity's oldest community announces dissolution
Unity's just outgrowing the early adopters. The starving indies will move on to the next up and coming engine. Professionals will continue using Unity (and UE, which also charges royalties) because of the breadth and depth of the toolsets.

I first used Unity when their WebGL system was in private beta. IIRC they tried charging royalties early on but then reverted that for marketshare, but I don't have time to look it up. In any case the royalties aren't burdensome at that scale. I don't think it'll affect much. Vocal minority, yada yada. Maybe it'll even get them to profitability next year!

jconley··on Growing scientific interest in vagus nerve stimulation
I'll have to try this! I have reflux or heartburn daily if I don't do things right. A few things help me.

1) Don't have an empty stomach. My stomach goes crazy. 2) Don't overeat. Large portions cause it nearly every time. 3) Don't eat anything within 2 hours of bed time.

So, basically, if I eat small meals often I am usually fine. And then there are trigger foods like too much coffee and alcohol and red sauces, and garlic and other things that cause indigestion.

jconley··on Ask HN: React Native or Flutter for a new app in 2023?
Yeah this is my experience as well. You can share a ton of code if you think about it up front. But the UI is not worth it. So different.
jconley··on S.F. says incidents by Cruise, Waymo driverless taxis are ‘skyrocketing.’
@garry did a rebuttal video to this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjgUPUKD-Sc
jconley··on Ask HN: React Native or Flutter for a new app in 2023?
React Native. TypeScript. NestJS backend, NextJS frontend. The ability to easily share code across the full stack is underrated. Of course you need someone that thinks at that high level building it.
jconley··on Ask HN: What boosted your confidence as a new programmer?
The biggest confidence boost as a new programmer was the first time I wrote some software on my own, other people used it, it worked, and they liked it. This happened within about a year of starting out. I suggest everyone try to build products and give them to people. Nothing more validating to me than building stuff people want.

jconley··on I saw RealPage's crappy rent-jacking-up software so you don't have to
Housing is not a right in the US. It's a for-profit endeavor. Unless that fundamental thing changes expect rents to go up as much as the market will bear and landlords to do everything to make as much profit as possible.

Side note: I doubt this is actually "AI". Probably some heuristics.

jconley··on Ask HN: I’m falling out of love with coding
I feel the same way when I'm in a position like that.

It's why I gravitate toward small pre product market fit startups as either one of the first employees or founder. There is only process where I make process and everyone is executing as quickly as possible. I get to learn a ton and feel productive. I'm much more motivated by intrinsic factors than things like a large salary so it works for me.

jconley··on Show HN: DriftDB – an open source WebSocket backend for real-time apps
Can I get in on that beta? Submitted the form yesterday. Currently building something that could use it. ;)
jconley··on Ask HN: Do you hate software engineering but love programming?
I'm definitely a hacker/artist type vs engineer. I like shipping things, stumbling around, finding a path, not planning them out and executing that plan. By the time I've planned something I have to use all of my available executive function to force myself to do it.

So I tend to gravitate to early startup life where it's all chaos and unknown and getting things done quickly is most important.

jconley··on Ask HN: How does a hobby programmer get hired?
Ship stuff.

Build something, anything, and put it in the wild. Make it open source. Repeat.

Startups will hire you.

jconley··on Ask HN: What are the best open source TypeScript projects I can learn from?
Nest is impressive. Especially if you came from .Net or Java. I just started a new project with Nest recently and it was a breath of fresh air. It has all the bits I had to add manually to other Node projects in the past. I feel like they go a bit over the top promoting design patterns in their documentation, though I appreciate how methodical they are with them in their own code.

jconley··on I record myself on audio 24x7 and use an AI to process the information
This is a cool project. One of my pet ideas that I haven't done is to build a home assistant where all data is stored and processed by a home "server". The biggest benefit I see is that it could truly be omnipresent. There in the background, answering questions, jumping into your conversations without prompt. And it's much less creepy if all that data isn't going to someone else's computer.

Also piping in and processing the data from my mobile would be cool, but I wouldn't want to invade other people's privacy if I'm in public.

jconley··on Ford F-150 Lightning: Fast Truck, Slow Computer
A bigger concern for me is the charging speed/infrastructure for what an F250/350 might want to do. For me, that's tow a 5th wheel or trailer a UTV for hundreds of miles. Need better infrastructure and much higher voltage packs to make that viable without spending hours at the chargers blocking parking lots.
jconley··on Ford F-150 Lightning: Fast Truck, Slow Computer
This is highly dependent on how you drive, elevation changes, weather conditions, load/trailer weight/aerodynamics, and average speeds. So... I've seen both better than EPA ratings and worse than EPA ratings. It's rated at 320 miles on the 131kwh battery, which is about 2.4 mi/kwh. I've driven at times ranging from 1.5mi/kwh to 3.5 mi/kwh. So, I think it's accurate for their mixed highway/city test. If you're doing pure highway and thinking about a road trip, that is worst case scenario. At like 70 mph it's going to be around 2-2.1 mi/kwh unladen, so it'll be less than EPA rated, faster speeds get worse due to aero. At 2 mi/kwh that's 262 miles of range.

On a road trip I'd also keep the truck between 10-80% state of charge for optimal charge speeds, so I'd only get 70% of the range, or 183 miles. So I'd plan to stop every 150 miles or so.

This is actually similar to my real world results driving a Tesla Model 3 and Y. For the most optimal total trip time you're usually stopping every 150-200 miles or so.

jconley··on Ford F-150 Lightning: Fast Truck, Slow Computer
Can confirm. I have an F-150 Lightning. The UI sucks and is slow. Much worse than my Teslas. It takes like 30 seconds when I get in the truck and turn it on before it's even usable. Switching between CarPlay and the native interface is ridiculous. It's a great truck though. Love it. :) AMA.
jconley··on Ask HN: Who's tired of upgrading React Native?
That's a nice approach!

The chain of libraries to update is usually the hardest part for me, especially something like that react-navigation jump. That one sucked. Of course, you often have to update RN to support the latest OS versions properly so there is often no choice but to update libraries too.

jconley··on Ask HN: Who's tired of upgrading React Native?
Expo with the managed workflow I assume? Not a bare project? :)
