jcmhn··on Comments In Code
Why I comment:

When I'm learning a language I write comments for myself. Notes about syntax, idioms, gotchas, and whatever else.

When I'm fixing a problem I leave XXX markers around to easily keep track of what I'm doing.

When I'm writing maintenance code I reference the ticket number, describe the problem or feature, and why we implemented the fix or feature the way we did.

You should never see the first two types of comments in checked in code, but I bet that I've probably saved later maintenance programmers hours of frustration with that last type of comment.

jcmhn··on Wikipedia shuts down Italian site because of Berlusconi's "Wiretapping Act"
I don't think this is a hissy fit. Instead it is a passive aggressive move to show what full compliance would mean.

"You want something stupid? Okay - here's all the stupid you can handle."

jcmhn··on Poll: 25% would trade rights for security, down from 47%
They didn't realize that expanding the powers of the presidency and eroding the checks and balances built into the constitution would apply to the "other party" too.
jcmhn··on Arch Linux moves up to Linux 3.0
Even when pacman gets confused the steps required to fix it are very simple - because the developers don't believe in allowing magic anywhere in the system. It's as minimalist and elegant as freebsd and slackware were 15 years ago, but it's as feature complete and very nearly as easy to use as Ubuntu.
jcmhn··on MIT Unravels the Secrets Behind Collective Intelligence
These studies always leave out the negative side of social sensitivity: bullying and exclusion. In a task worked on for 5 hours everyone still has on their party manners.
jcmhn··on Giving the RIAA the Middle Finger
I don't begrudge artists making money off their early hits for a few decades, but the professional descendants whining about lost revenue don't exactly excite my pity.
jcmhn··on Ask HN: If you could change one thing on the Web, what would it be?
Browser error messages and warning dialogs about POST data and mixed encrypted and un-encrypted data are worse than useless.

Browsers need to be silent by default regarding things that users are not equipped to make decisions about.

jcmhn··on First women computer programmers inspire documentary
Careful buddy, you're edging into misogyny there. Next thing you know you'll be demanding proof regarding feminist statements about wages or health issues - and at that point you're practically part of the Talliban.
jcmhn··on Banned from buying iPads... for life.
Factor in the innate hilarity of anything involving the iCult with the soup nazi reference and you have what the kids call "comedy gold". There isn't any outrage here, just slightly amused contempt for the ridiculous way the retail drones handled things.
jcmhn··on LastWordsLeft: Unregistered One-Word Domains
I checked a few that looked too good to be true and in every case the registrar was godaddy. I'm guessing that they probably block scripts that run mass queries against their system, or maybe they return results in a way that made the script choke.
jcmhn··on Two simple tricks for better shell script error handling
If your script is a daemon, a runlevel or service script, an at or cron job, or just needs to spawn or control processes then trap will make you hate unix and your life.
jcmhn··on Would You Pay a Girl to Play Halo With You?
Lonely deluded males spend money to impress girls paid to be there. Heartless mercenary females pretend they might be interested in the lonely deluded males if only they spent another $20.

So it's an online strip club slash chuck-e-cheese. Too cool.

jcmhn··on Brute force way to prevent the "Terminate Batch job (Y/N)?" prompt
I switched to the cygwin urxvt a few months back and I've not seen a single "batch job" complaint on ctl-D since.

(As an added bonus I get the best terminal emulation compatibility since... well, since ever)

jcmhn··on Psychopaths among us
It appears more like a subtle joke than propaganda: a right-wing conspiracy story told in the style of left-wing sociobabble.
jcmhn··on Making out is its own reward
But by the late 70s to early 80s (when I was of the age), this wouldn't have been tolerated. You can only be "dating" one person at a time.

My time was a bit later, late 80s to early 90s - but at that time the general rule as I experienced it was that above-average women and exceptionally attractive men could get away with multiple dating partners, but it was off limits to the majority,

jcmhn··on [dead]
That said, its discussion and moderation system is still one of the best out there.

The system was a decade ahead of its time, but imo the owners broke it by continually fiddling with the rules in an attempt to keep people from turning karma and fans into a way to keep score.

jcmhn··on Seen Not Heard: How Obscure Security Makes Schools Suck
You can't get much more direct access to human motivation than with child safety issues. A reasonable argument can be made that child health and safety is pretty much the point of human civilization in the first place.
jcmhn··on Road to the Nut House
Is the fact that McCain is an empty suit and a handshake news to anyone? Or that Clinton is a moody castrating bitch? Or that Obama is kind of arrogant? Or that Palin is vapid?
jcmhn··on I'm a Barbie Girl in a CS World
I'd like to think adults are more mature than kindergarten-level exclusion, fellow hackers most of all.

People who aren't into geek things often display contempt of them, viewing rpgs and sci-fi as immature and weird. My guess is that she didn't even see that she giving off a "listen dorks, don't invite me to play pretend wizard with you" vibe. Because my experience is that geeks are enthusiastically inclusive.

jcmhn··on No. You Can’t Pick My Brain.
Some women believe that being polite or kind is tantamount to being a doormat. Such diseased thinking is apparently caused by a course in women's studies or speed reading self-help books.
jcmhn··on No. You Can’t Pick My Brain.
Don’t undervalue either. As women (and compassionate people everywhere) we like to help and can get trapped in giving our time and ideas away for free because we’re afraid to ask for compensation.

Your time is valuable, and needs to be protected from people who want to take it without giving you anything. Ideas, OTOH, are worthless without ability and perseverance to actually turn them into something. Don't be an idea rat - share your stupid ideas and the person you share it with might improve it for you.

jcmhn··on Patriot Act Renewed Without Any New Civil Liberties Protections
> Their spinelessness and willingness to be the Bush-lite party could cost them dearly in the mid-terms and 2012.

The republicans could pick up some disaffected democrats as single issue voters on hot-button topics. But the social conservative agenda that the republicans are married to is fairly distasteful to people who regularly vote democrat - even if the parties are 95% identical in practice.

jcmhn··on Why the Windows Registry sucks … technically
IMO the "standard" of /etc is an explicit non-standard. It consists of free-form text and a filesystem - and all the tools that existing for dealing with those things.
jcmhn··on Google Interview Questions
I'm not sure that the riddle questions were ever "real" interview questions.

I got the "12 balls, find the fake" question at an interview once. It seemed to be more a tension killer than anything anyone in the room really cared about. The actual interview was a series of questions along the lines of: "how would you go about doing X, sketch code or pseudo-code on the whiteboard and then explain it".

jcmhn··on Is ChatRoulette the Future of the Internet or Its Distant Past?
Because gay culture is 10 years ahead of everyone else in using the internet to hook up. This ap is already 7 years obsolete in gay internet years.
jcmhn··on Sarah Silverman is brilliant
Now I'm just plain confused. I had finally figured out that the tooth fairy, bigfoot, jimmy carter, and women with a genuine sense of humor were all just made up by my parents. And now you tell me that at least some of them are real?
jcmhn··on People Searching for "Cancel Google" End Up on Wrong Page, Add Comments
I remember seeing that page the other day during the RWW facebook thing and being pretty sure it was going to fill up with those sorts of jokes.

Real users are way funnier than troll-wannabes could ever be, because they sometimes manage to mangle and misunderstand things in a way that reveals that they live in a completely different universe than you do.

jcmhn··on Why Java Sucks For Sysadmins
> Much of it is just "I haven't learned to do my job."

The point of the article is that java makes his job harder. There are standard tools (syslog, truss, ldd) that he uses to troubleshoot problems under unix, and java supports zero of them.

jcmhn··on Why Java Sucks For Sysadmins
> - he equates uncaught java stacktraces with properly displayed error messages from command-line tools

Maybe that isn't fair, but there's something about java that seems to make programmers think that uncaught exceptions are an acceptable standard error exit.

Or maybe I'm just really unlucky in happening to run into the problem over and over and over again.

jcmhn··on Why Java Sucks For Sysadmins
Preach it brother.

Maybe java itself doesn't suck - I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt because a lot of fairly smart folks seem to like it. But a large number of real life java tools and programs suck. It's to the point where I shudder in revulsion every time I see the telltale indications that a solaris (or even worse - linux) tool is written in java - it promises a future that involves playing with 50 levels of shell wrappers to get a remotely meaningful error message.
