jcloud_dev··on A day in the life of Lloyd Squires, Vermont's 'best' bagel maker
Still, 15 hours of manual labor a day. I worked in a bakery and this is a hard sell for anyone. Assembly line work in a factory is much easier occupation (I did that too).
jcloud_dev··on How Britain beat the odds to achieve space flight, and then abandoned it
The British are thankfully regaining the ability for space launches. There is a new spaceport being built in UK and a number of companies that plan on using it.
jcloud_dev··on WW2 Spitfire Pilot Mary Ellis Dies
Russian Air Force had a number of female combat pilots during WW2. Some flew fighters and even Pe-2 dive bombers. The last one had controls so hard to move that two women (pilot and navigator) had to join the forces to pull the stick back on take-off.

Another interesting Civ clone is C-Evo: http://c-evo.org/text.html

For a long time it was small enough to fit on a 1.44 floppy!

jcloud_dev··on The Great Apple Keyboard Cover-Up
Spill drains? I once spilled an entire cup of tea on my T440 - almost half a liter. Didn't even need to power down the laptop to continue working.

I believe I went through 3-4 batteries over this time. So every 5-7 years. Funny enough, the wristbands were wearing out faster than the batteries.

A Casio watch was given to me as birthday gift in 1998. It is still on my wrist, showing time.

I can't think of a better tribute for that man.

jcloud_dev··on Ask HN: ZOS/Cobol Development in Canada?
RBC in Toronto is using COBOL on IBM mainframes. They have plenty of in-house developers.
jcloud_dev··on Science’s Pirate Queen
I wish your comment was higher. You describe her personality quite accurately, based on what I know. That being said, "borderline crazy person with no fear of consequences" is the exactly the type of people that can push humanity forward.

Richard Stallman is another example of such a person, I think. You have to be an extremist to make other players in the field to yield.
