jck··on Production Twitter on one machine? 100Gbps NICs and NVMe are fast
I once built a quick and dirty load testing tool for a public facing service we built. The tool was pretty simple - something like https://github.com/bojand/ghz but with traffic and data patterns closer to what we expected to see in the real world. We used argo-workflows to generate scale.

One thing which we noticed was that there was a considerable difference in performance characteristics based on how we parallelized the load testing tool (multiple threads, multiple processes, multiple kubernetes pods, pods forced to be distributed across nodes).

I think that when you run non-distrubuted load tests you benefit from bunch of cool things which happen with http2 and Linux (multiplexing, resource sharing etc) which might make applications seem much faster than they would be in the real world.

jck··on Petals: Run 100B+ language models at home bit-torrent style
To be fair, so was the question.

This is a language model, not an oracle or an interface to weather forecast data.

There is no workaround: https://github.com/mozilla-mobile/fenix/issues/7546
jck··on Show HN: Portable Secret – How I store my secrets and communicate privately
On Android. It is a known issue which Mozilla don't seem to intend to fix: https://github.com/mozilla-mobile/fenix/issues/7546
jck··on YouTube Transcript – read YouTube videos
I am not a fan of this pattern - if I'm understanding correctly, you would have to part with all of yt-dlp's niceties like playlist/channel handling, quality selection, file naming, logging config etc.

Why not just use the whisper cli on yt-dlp CLI's output for videos with bad or no subtitles?

jck··on Ask HN: Is Google becoming useless as a search engine, or is it just me?
I think google has reduced their weights for github drastically. The other day, I googled a github url verbatim (without the https:// - Firefox Android somehow didn't have the option to open the url when I selected it) and the repo was nowhere in the search results.
jck··on Why does zsh start so slowly?
You can use a plugin manager like https://github.com/marlonrichert/zsh-snap to cache the output of these commands. Using something like the packages version number as the cache key will ensure that it gets regenerated only once per package update as opposed to every shell launch.
jck··on AT&T Syntax versus Intel Syntax (2001)
I wonder if it would have been more ergonomic to have the labels be % prefixed instead of registers.
jck··on Taxonomy Is Hard
How are "labels" different from tags?
jck··on Reddit begins to force users to use app on mobile
Thankfully, unofficial apps still work. I use relay on Android - it's a great app and one of my favorite Android apps. It will be a sad day when/if reddit gimps their public api and breaks these apps.
jck··on In Praise of FFmpeg
The GPL doesn't force you to give anything away if you've just modified the code for personal use. You only need to provide source code if you're distributing your modified software.

You're free to avoid using GPL code if you disagree with the philosophy but it is undeniable that GPL greatly improves software (for users, not corporations) like linux and ffmepg.

jck··on Under anesthesia, where do our minds go?
Yeah death sucks and most people aren't ready for it. We can't really know if "afterlife" exists but imo, it's not wise to live life assuming that that is the case. It might be better to do your best assuming you can't tell if there is an afterlife. If there's no afterlife, you did your best and if there is one then it's a bonus.
jck··on Under anesthesia, where do our minds go?
And how does life being infinite suddenly make it meaningful for you?

Life means nothing in the "grand scheme of things". It just is. You exist because of a long sequence of random events and then it just sort of ends. There's no deeper meaning, it's just how our universe works. In this brief moment when you get to exist, you can choose to do things which make you feel good.

jck··on Fake Dog for Home Security
Obviously, crime sucks and society needs criminals to face some sort of consequence but your take (vengeance) is pretty sad and lacking to me. You need to understand that most of these sorts of crimes are committed by people in terrible socioeconomic conditions and you seem like you have the privilege to not know what that sort of despair feels like and how it can break people.
jck··on Under anesthesia, where do our minds go?
Some would argue the exact opposite - that the ephemeral nature of existence makes being alive that much more special. That our finite existence here is a gift to treasure and enjoy and not just something you tolerate while you wait for the "real thing"(eternal existence in heaven or whatever)
jck··on SQLite Internals: Pages and B-trees
It looks like sqlite is not much faster than fs on Linux.

I've also found that ripgrep performs surprisingly well with folders containing large numbers of text files - this makes raw json on disk more convenient for many simple usecases which don't require complex queries.

jck··on Permissive forwarding rule leads to unintentional exposure of containers (2021)
Podman 4 rootless uses a different network stack: https://www.redhat.com/sysadmin/podman-new-network-stack

It is performant enough for my usecase: services used by me and a few friends.

I don't use the root mode, but I was under the impression it doesn't have the same well known docker issue where it exposes everything on the public interface(and using a firewall on top of it is complicated)

jck··on Permissive forwarding rule leads to unintentional exposure of containers (2021)
Securing docker, with it's weird iptables shenanigans is a nightmare. I prefer to use rootless podman, and also avoid exposing ports (by using internal routing and if needed, a reverse proxy with only one published port)
jck··on A lightning bolt would be worth only about a nickel (2015)
Let's say a person outputs 500W and we can somehow capture all of it. That would be 10cents worth of electricity in an hour.

Note that these are very generous estimates, but it does demonstrate how silly the idea of trying to generate electricity by capturing exercise output is (in a purely economic sense).

jck··on LaMDA is not sentient
Pharmacists are bound by clear rules and regulations which dictate what drugs they can dispense and when. It has little to do with your "prompt engineering" and more to do with whether your doctor actually filed the prescription correctly.
jck··on Last public payphone removed from Manhattan streets
Former NYC resident. Those things are everywhere in Manhattan and in surprisingly good condition most of the times.
jck··on How to professionally say
Sounds like BSG and frak
jck··on Typing.io: Typing Practice for Programmers
I've had great luck with https://www.keybr.com/ in the past. It's algorithm was really good at fixing my weak spots fast.
jck··on Van life (cancer edition) finale
Please don't involve another human if you have to do it.
jck··on PipeWire: A year in review and a look ahead
I've had good luck with this method: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PipeWire#Sharing_audio_devi...
jck··on Trapped in Silicon Valley’s hidden caste system
You are right. This anti "affirmative action" rhetoric is quite common among upper caste people in India. Unless OP managed to get faked documents and pretended to be from a lower caste, they absolutely did not gain anything.
jck··on Show HN: Container registry on a budget using AWS S3
It sounds like you're just describing a build server and it's filesystem.
jck··on Show HN: Test your shape rotation skills
Much like super hexagon, I found that "turning my mind off" and going on instinct/intuition is a surprisingly good strategy for this game - till it isn't.
jck··on Show HN: Test your shape rotation skills
Thanks for this. I was a huge fan of super hexagon and enjoyed this too.
jck··on MonoLisa – A font designed for developers
Thanks for the victor mono recommendation. It looks really good! I was blown away by how narrow it was compared to other forms in the comparison tool.

Side note: it's a bummer that you never see Monaco on these comparison tools. Monaco has been my monospace font of choice for many years now despite never owning a Macbook: https://github.com/cseelus/monego
