jcims··on How Organizations Use AI: Evidence from ChatGPT [pdf]
Eh.

Prior to her current role my gf spent about a decade as the head of a very elite private elementary school (she's been in education for 35 years now). Certainly ten figure families represented in the student body with names you would recognize as such. The school had access to all of the resources they could ask for and they did very well on paper. However, the attitude of the students was qualitatively different (and in my gf's opinion much worse) than those of her current students.

It's fun to imagine a collection of rock star educators huddled around every child just constantly feeding their intellectual curiosity, but the reality is most of those kids just aren't hungry. They live lives of comfortable inconsequentiality which, on average, seems to rob something from human curiosity and drive.

Granted I didn't comb over it but to me the big issue was that it was just a big data dump without any material attempt at meaningful analysis.

That and all the figures were at the bottom which was kind of annoying.

I didn't scour the text but one thing I didn't see as an explanatory consideration in the paper is that the larger companies they talk about having larger adoption are also much more likely to have reasonably robust controls (and consequences) that prevent mixing personal/corporate use of AI tooling. That's my world.

On the other hand my girlfriend is a teacher and for the past year ChatGPT has allowed her to augment her lesson plans with slides/games/etc that have had a very positive effect on student engagement. She also uses it to help with analysis of testing data against her lesson plans and state standards to find places to shore things up as the year progresses. She runs the english language learning department in her school and also uses it to help ensure that there is representation in her materials for the huge mix of cultural backgrounds of her students.

It's truly helped her immensely and it's all been on her personal account. The district has no program or budget to guide or support teachers and admin on using these tools in education.

jcims··on Show HN: Scroll through all 43252003274489856000 Rubik's Cube states
My scroll wheel covers about 12 states per inch of travel. Did the stubby pencil work and it would take about 9.5 years to scroll through them all if the wheel surface was moving at the speed of light.

>And has a woman ever looked as seductive as Sean Young smoking a cigarette as she's being interviewed by Harrison Ford at Tyrell Corp?

It really is for me a pinnacle. I sometimes wonder what it’s like to be part of something like this. Do you even know? I’m just some random fifty something among billions and your comment resonated because it was a shared experience. I have no idea if my grandchildren could watch the movie and come away with that but my cumulative nature and nurture sure as hell did.

Yes.

Agreed. I've started calling our non-production infrastructure environments 'engineering' rather than dev, and nobody's invited. We'll pull in platform teams that are exposed to this shame environmental offset issue, but no customers.

Indeed. Likely a bit of both.

The wild thing is that, if I understand it correctly, if you were floating in a spacesuit at the same spot you'd also see that resolution (likely highly distorted) with the naked eye.
jcims··on Satellite Tracker – Live Map of Starlink and 30k Satellites
Yeah if the lower 48 states (~2800 miles) span the width of my entire screen (2560px), each pixel represents just over a mile. The satellites at that level were rendered with dots that are ~3px or just over 3 miles/.1% of that width.

The Starlink v2 is 100ft on it's longest dimension. This means that the actual size of the satellite relative to the dot is on the same order of magnitude (.6%) as the dot is to the size of the US when it takes up my entire screen.

What a goofy comment.

Pedestrians are *also* subject to right-of-way rules, just like everyone else on the road. Many examples of people running between parked/stopped cars and getting smoked when they hit an open lane with a vehicle they did not expect to be there.

Not the driver's fault.

jcims··on Africans Are Turning to Starlink
It’s also surprisingly reliable given the physics of it all. I built a house out in the country in 2007 and 10Mbps DSL was all that was available for terrestrial connectivity up until literally yesterday.

The DSL would go down for hours a couple of times per month. I got on an early starlink pilot program and had a dish up in early 2021. Aside from momentary blips on the leading edge of a stormfront and occasional network issues a couple of times per year, it’s been rock solid with half the latency and 20x the bandwidth.

Great comment!

>I thought was kind of the most fascinating part of the damninteresting article was the revelation that the evolved programs were inseparable from the single physical FPGA used in the training.

100% agree with this!!! It gave me this weird feeling the first time i read it, like the onset of some alien intelligence. xD

I definitely think a simulator is the way to go, but I'm guessing tools like that could find problems and edge cases in the simulator that nobody thought to test for.

I'm just glad they still have the article up. I bet I've shared it 50 times over the past 20 years lol.

Vendor diversity is a longstanding risk management principle. For it to work you need to invest in it as you build, not when the rug is pulled.
jcims··on I built a mmWave material classification radar (2025)
Very cool idea.

I'm sure this can be annoying when people do this, but I can't help myself lol. I wonder if you could operate in a different modality and find discontinuities in material properties rather than use it as a classifier. For some reason skin cancer detection popped into my head, but general purpose inspection/detection cases for any discontinuities might be pretty helpful. Depending on the resolution/size of the field it's inspecting a realtime camera overlay might be interesting for correlation sake.

jcims··on Words Are a Byproduct of Consciousness. For LLMs, It's Backwards
I've noticed that more and more of my mental attention while speaking is observing the words that come out of my mouth rather than 'generating' them. I split time between rough pathfinding in my mind to fit a conceptual framework then kind of sit and listen as it comes out to think about how they sound. If I had to guess this happens on a 1-2 sentence chunk at a time.
