jchrome··on Ask HN: Why don't startups outsource/offshore development if salaries are low?
"a very smart friend"

People who are comfortable making such mass generalizations I wouldn't deem intelligent.

jchrome··on Ask HN: Why don't startups outsource/offshore development if salaries are low?
It's not so much as arrogance as it is just being honest about the quality of outsourced work. If you were worried about offending people, you would come up with all sorts of excuses for not outsourcing work. But honesty is not always the nicest thing to hear. I've been working with our outsourced team in Bangladesh and their quality of work is much less rigorous than that of our in-house team.

"Indians devs are levelling [sic] up fast and I predict that in 4-5 years the quality gap will become almost non existent."

You may be correct but the Original Post is talking about now*. Also, you seem to agree that there is a "quality gap".

jchrome··on Dirty lens article
If only this was true for dust on the rear element of the lens as well.

Maybe I don't see a lot of good photos because I'm not looking hard enough. But the problem with "GAS" is that it puts all the focus on the gear and takes attention away from technique/lighting/composition etc. You can make great photos with a pinhole box camera if you wanted to (and I'd probably want to see them more than some rich shmoe with a brand new DSLR with 400 mgpx's photos).

Spend your money on books, classes and prints. Not on cameras/lenses.

jchrome··on Update on Sony Investigation
"And the general conspiratorial narrative is that the US is trying to blame a blameless North Korea to achieve...something. Not sure what."

To assume the US Government's PR team won't use anything/everything to reinforce, reiterate or bolster it's own agenda is just idiocy. There are far too many examples throughout history where it has.

Whether or not that means that this investigation is a farce, is another question.

jchrome··on Skinny Puppy demands royalties from US govt for using their music in Guantanamo
So if my mom tortured me by blaring Skinny Puppy music for 12 hours straight they couldn't sue her?
jchrome··on Keurig 2.0 DRM Bypass
Not to mention that pouring boiling water through cheap plastic leaches industrial chemicals into our coffee, thereby increasing our chances of cancer.

Plus Keurig tastes like a cup of monkey-poo. French press is the way to go (or iced coffee).

jchrome··on The Internet is Shit (2003)
"Fiction is self-perpetuating."

I've found really interesting ways that this manifests itself.

I'm a film-camera lover. Well, my Fuji GW690 mk3 is fantastic, except that when I trip the shutter, there's an awful "ping" sound that it makes. I read forum after forum and watched youtube videos that all said the same thing: "Remove the counter assembly and it will remove the ping."

Getting a hair up my derrier, I decided to do this and found, after much work, that the ping sound was in the shutter assembly and could not be mitigated.

Check the work here. http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1447...

Anyway, just one internet myth amongst millions I'm sure. I was just so surprised that people would parrot other peoples lies like that. If that's the case with something so minor, I can only imagine the amount of misinformation out there (where people have something to gain).

jchrome··on Where Are the Hardest Places to Live in the U.S.?
> Which passage in the Bible tells Christians to shun higher education?

- He/She never said that any biblical passage tells Christians to shun higher education. Nice straw man.

He/She said "many in this area continue to shun higher education in favor of strict adherence to the bible." But, since you are asking the question, lets look at an answer:

- How about all of the passages justifying rape/slavery/violence in the Old Testament? All of these, while not outright shunning higher education, do so implicitly. Just one example among many:

"However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way." (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)

Something else to look at - "Anti-intellectualism in American Life" (Richard Hofstadter). A great book. His tale begins with itinerant Baptist ministers traveling through the bible belt, denouncing those "New England intellectuals". Anti-Intellectualism and organized American religion in the South are very good and old friends.

jchrome··on 2 years with Angular
I never understand an article that is only negative and never presents a viable alternative.

OK - So you think Angular is not good for "professional" work. Then what is? Present an alternative and compare and contrast them. Then we will tear it up and come to our own conclusions like the ruthless masses that we are.

jchrome··on Human vs. Squirrel: The Battle of Wits Is On
Do you eat them?

According to Uncle Eddy from Christmas Vacation, they're high in cholesterol.

jchrome··on Human vs. Squirrel: The Battle of Wits Is On
Awesome. So the writer writes about how he might not have a story because a cat moves in next door. Problem solved by kids chasing it away. But, uh oh, no story because Fall occurs and acorns are on the ground. But that's no problem because he already has 700 words.
jchrome··on Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
I don't really support trying to get a broad understanding of philosophy. It's much better to get in-depth with a specific philosopher and then move on to the next, chronologically.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that often, Philosophers of a certain generation are building their theses in reaction to the previous generation. So there's a great reason to read Ancient philosophy, starting with the pre-Socratics.

I highly recommend "Retrieving the Ancients". David Roochnik (the author) was my professor for both Ancient and Modern philosophy. Trying to be unbiased here but this is a great introduction to the pre-Socratics and it even connects their ancient issues with modern ones.

jchrome··on A Leica T Review
The M series is Leica's defining camera series. These offshoots are just more revenue streams.

Sony has really come out strong. I still shoot film but if I made my way back to digital I would go with a A7.

jchrome··on A Leica T Review
Yea. Leica makes jewelry. They are great cameras. But they are also jewelry.
jchrome··on A Leica T Review
I don't think "Point and Shoot" is the correct term. Those refer to cameras with fixed zoom lenses.

This has interchangeable lenses and therefore is within the "mirrorless" category.

jchrome··on Why Can't the United States Build a High-Speed Rail System?
>The best example of public transportation the US has is probably NYC and it really isn't all that great. It's dirty, slow, unreliable, crowded and surprisingly expensive. (at 100$/mo owning a car in almost any other city in the US is cheaper)

You obviously don't live in NYC for saying such things.

I love the subway and love the fact that I don't have to take a car to work. It's green (runs off of electricity). I don't have to worry about oil changes, tires, gas, insurance, the initial outlay of a lot of cash for a car... etc. Did I mention its faster than a cab?

I'll give you that it's dirty and crowded (depending on the time). But nothing else.

jchrome··on A Reminder To Investors
Well, putting it that way, it is an insult. This is why companies have someone who is intelligent craft delicate messages.

There are a lot of common sense things in this world. Washing behind your ears, changing your sheets... etc.

jchrome··on We got our first Delaware tax bill: $74,018.74
Hmmm. So you don't think that this is front-page worthy. That's interesting.

Here's something to take note of - your opinion doesn't matter. The magic of a democracy is that a group* of opinions do matter.

Also, 2 second google search will answer all the questions one might have about his/her opinion not mattering on Hacker News.

Well, I guess that solves that. Next post.
jchrome··on The New York Times Calls for Marijuana Legalization
Are you the real Fred Durst (aka, Limp Bizkit)?

If so, I wouldn't doubt that you have a lot of friends addicted to marijuana.

In terms of a response to your post, I am less than 4 months away from turning 30 years old. All of my friends were "potheads" in high school (and college). Zero of them had their life destroyed by it. They are all productive, upstanding people. If anything, I think the fact that some of them were stigmatized so heavily by being potheads really set them back.

Now, this is just anecdotal and I may not represent a "representative sample". So that's just my experience.

jchrome··on Keep it Simple – A Guide to Minimalist Photography
I could agree with that. I use instagram as well and like it for the reasons you mentioned. But what your hitting upon is that it's not necessarily photography, but more a social experience. As you put it:

>A different art form altogether.

So I don't think it should be categorized as photography. And you mentioned that looking at it was a good way to learn how to be a photographer. Which I still don't think it is.

The greatest photographers (those who we should be studying) did not use instagram. And for the highly skilled contemporaries that do use instagram, I highly doubt they post their best on the service.

jchrome··on Keep it Simple – A Guide to Minimalist Photography
I agree. I was disappointed that they emphasized minimalism with light, shadow, composition etc but then made these photos to look heavily post-processed. Much too much contrast here.
jchrome··on Keep it Simple – A Guide to Minimalist Photography
If I seriously wanted to learn about photography, I wouldn't look at instagram (over-saturation, higher contrast... in other words, a lack of subtlety). That sounds much more akin to backdrops for hipster startup home pages and blogs.

If I wanted to take good photographs, I would practice photography a whole lot. Then read a little bit. Then practice a whole lot. Then read a little bit.

Reading about photography can never match the practice of photography (but it can help... a little bit). I would also shoot film (many in photography school talk about the "film mindset"). You need to believe that your photos are a limited resource and therefore save each shot for the best moments. "Spraying and praying" with digital rarely comes out with anything good.

And now for some shameless self promotion: www.stillthrill.com
