While different places define "literate" differently, I've seen figures that say 20% of adults in the USA are functionally illiterate.

Since Windows 11 incorporated libarchive back in October 2023 there is less reason to use 7-zip on windows. I would be surprised if any of my friends even know what a zip file is let alone zstd.

I remember years ago when digital projection was just becoming the norm. I saw a movie (I don't remember which one) and during the opening scene I remember thinking "why are the credits jittering around? Oh. This is actually being projected on film!"

He's always seemed very frustrated with the gaming industry and I hope he's happy in his day to day life. I remember running across Crawford's works and storytron back around 2000. I may be cynical but I think this is all marketing. From what I've seen there is so much upselling built into the concept that if this ever comes out that I don't think many people will be driving around the 20K model.

in 2021 my beloved Honda Fit got totaled. I bought it new in 09 and only had 80K miles on it. They don't sell new ones in North America any more. So I bought a Kia Rio. They don't make those any more. I don't really like it but with the current chaos in the economy I'm not trading it in any time soon.

I was in the UK for the first time last month and was struck by how many hatchbacks and sedans they have that we don't in North America.

Same here. I am in a small midwestern USA city of less than 100k people. Someone got a grant to build some housing. Instead of building affordable housing they tried to build a huge "luxury" apartment complex with rent way above average for the city.

Unless it is something really really good I don't think they do. The one that was in my town a couple years ago would post pictures on facebook of all the best things they had in order to entice people to come in.

There was one of these in my town. I went two different times and There were tons of cheap clothes (mostly women and children sizes), replacement parts for random appliances, as seen on tv crap. It is no wonder it went out of business: They get so much crap that no one wants that they can't even sell it for a dollar so they have to figure out what to do with it.

I found season 1 so underwhelming that I haven't gotten to season 2 yet.

I teach at a community college and unless it is sports, most people, especially (but not limited to) young people, don't watch much tv or movies at all. I try to give examples from current tv shows and rarely have any of the students seen them.

I am curious what is so different about Keynote? I tried using it once for a few minutes in a computer lab years ago and while I remember some of the ways of doing things were different, I don't remember it being different. I don't get what people love about Andor. The prison break episode was good but the flashbacks to the kids in the jungle were horrible and the funeral with instruments straight out of Fat Albert's junkyard band were laughable.

The dollar amount may be higher but the phenomenon is nothing new. In undergrad I remember scavenging a bunch of lumber to make a bad frame. In grad school the end of the spring semester was a time for me to go drive around the undergrad apartments looking for stuff.
