jcarrano··on Chat Control: EU states want to legalize comprehensive mass scans indirectly
The only way out would be to either pass a law that makes chat control illegal (which is not going to happen) or for chat control to pass and be struck down by the courts.
jcarrano··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
BYD trucks haven't won a war yet, so at least in that segment Toyota is safe for now.
jcarrano··on Why is the liver so weirdly regenerative?
Nature's solution for all these problems so far has been to die, as harsh as it sounds. You try to get the important stuff (whatever that is to you) done before that happens, and then you are supposed to pass on the torch to whoever comes after.
jcarrano··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
I'm guessing they could, in theory, attack open source projects, but it would not be very effective as those could be infinitely forked. That's the reason why governments will actually support an encourage an oligopoly of proprietary platforms via regulations (e.g. mandatory automated scanning) which only companies can practically comply with.
jcarrano··on Ubuntu 26.10 completes transition to Rust-based coreutils
Debian packages are ancient, unless you use "testing", which will be broken. That being said, Ubuntu is horrible too. The problem comes when you have to use proprietary software made by incompetent vendors, and that only works in Ubuntu.
jcarrano··on Leak: EU Commission to pitch social media restrictions for under-15s
I feel society is going in a direction where there is no longer any individual responsibility. Instead everything is delegated to the state. Can't limit your kids screen time? Not your fault, it is the evil algorithm and it is up to your government to discipline your children. Being a parent will be reduced to providing your gametes.
jcarrano··on Automattic's board forces CEO Matt Mullenweg into leave of absence
My impression was that the major argument against static site generators is the unfriendly UX for non-technical contributors to the site, and with LLMs that problem is completely solved.
jcarrano··on All grown-ups were once children, but only few of them remember it
Destroying things is part of human experience. Kids got to have that.
jcarrano··on Async Rust vs RTOS showdown (2022)
AI is trained with an overwhelming amount of web-related code that is open source. For embedded, not only is the training set smaller, but much of what's publicly visible is not of great quality.
jcarrano··on Cheap GPS jammers are filling the world with navigation dead zones
It is called "Reggaeton be Gone"[1]. I think the author had too many problems with his neighbor.

jcarrano··on Fastpotify
If it can transform into Winamp I don't care if the code is LLM generated, typed by infinite monkeys or found in some ancient scrolls.

Jokes aside, how can you be sure that the official Spotify app (or any app, or Windows) was not written by a LLM without supervision?

jcarrano··on C2PA Cameras Do Not Survive Contact with Reality
If this could be made to work reliably, it would imply that cameras would have the ability to doxx users.
jcarrano··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
Regarding the Egyptian messages, if you care about these things you simply avoid doing business (especially in regulated industries) in the third world. The fact is that, even before the incident with the messages, cell providers had to sit down with the "men with guns" to even be able to operate in the country.
jcarrano··on We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility
According to the article, the scanning facility has been there for a while, so it may well be that they have been destructively scanning books for a while, even before AI. It makes sense for the major book retailer to have digital copies of every book so that it can begin selling those as soon as it can negotiate the rights (if there are any).

In any case, all the indignation about destructive digitization misses the point that rare books takings space in a warehouse for years without being bought will eventually be destroyed anyway.

jcarrano··on GIMP Development Update
Plus, it almost does not change between releases, so you need to learn it only once.

The few times when I tried to use a recent version of Photoshop, however, I could not figure out even basic stuff like layer masks,

jcarrano··on I was accused of using AI in my dissertation but I wrote it all myself
18 years ago I was accused of plagiarizing an unnamed online monograph (I was never told which one) on an English literature exam that I wrote with pen and paper inside a classroom. It was a very weird experience.
jcarrano··on The German Mittelstand
What I don't get in these cases is why they do this if they are not looking for a bribe? Just for sport?
jcarrano··on Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM
What if they had usb drives with Linux installers in blister packs at electronics stores?
jcarrano··on Show HN: Isopolis – Isometric pixel map of SF
The same "fair use" as when Google trained its model on everyone else's photos.
jcarrano··on Measuring developer productivity with the DX Core 4
Did anyone here ever worked under these sorts of "metrics"? I can't even imagine what a torture it would be.
jcarrano··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
The problem with this feature is that the agents could realize the phone was being wiped. For the duress pin to be 100% effective, it would have to log in normally to a default install.
jcarrano··on Never Enough
> Increased tactile stimulation of the hind legs causes an increase in levels of serotonin. This causes the locust to change colour, eat much more, and breed much more easily. [1]

Fascinating.

jcarrano··on 'VPNs are lawful technical tools,' says EU Court in landmark copyright ruling
You could jump on a train from NL and be in Belgium in 15 minutes, get a "bootleg" physical copy of the diary and head back to NL. No one is suing for that.
jcarrano··on TS-2026-009: Insecure argument handling in Tailscale SSH permitted root access
> usernames were passed as arguments to getent(1) to retrieve the corresponding passwd entry

Always try to use actual API/system calls (in this case getpwnam) instead of calling sub-processes.

jcarrano··on Actegories
Watch his lecture series on YouTube. We you started programming, you had to adapt your brain to the way of thinking of computer programs. Think of this as an continuation of that evolution, were you acquire new methods of reasoning that can abstract many apparently different problems into the same concept.
jcarrano··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
> life is short—play naked!

Such a concise way of saying what I've been thinking for a long time.

jcarrano··on Every new car sold in the European Union must include a driver monitoring camera
Meanwhile in Germany I see, quite literally, 12 traffic signs on a 100m stretch of road. I'm pretty sure that looking at all those signs adds up to a few seconds at least.
jcarrano··on Microsoft Can Track Users via a Windows Device ID
In dbus, it seems the feature is intended for two processes to know they can access the same shmem and other system resources. I'm struggling to understand in which circumstances would that be useful.
jcarrano··on Full Writeup of the Windows GDID
Aside from the writeup, how stupid must one be to commit cybercrimes from a Windows 11 computer full of spyware?
jcarrano··on Thomann takes legal action against Fender
If signals were based on low impedance current loops as opposed to voltage-based like they are today, interference could be much reduced. This would break phantom power, so power to preamps would have to be send through another set of conductors, which would make the design of the electronics easier as well as safer.

Of course, none of this will ever happen.
