one typo in the post is Bitcoin uses secp256k1 (not sicp256k1)

Agree and I think if Caruana has the passion to be the best, he will be better than Carlsen.

"Caruana is earning a reputation as the most prepared player of his era—a man who studies everything and forgets nothing."

"If there’s a rap on Carlsen, it’s that he’s the anti-Caruana: He doesn’t prepare as diligently as he could."

"It’s as though he [Carlsen] serves underhand to just get the point started because he knows he can beat you in the rally. But Caruana has the booming serve."

Caruana has been in the top 10 for 2.5 years though [1], and hopefully he can breakthrough and firmly be someone who can give Carlsen a challenge. As a data point [2], it took Kasparov 2 years to get in the top 10, another 2 years to become #2, and another 2 years to become the best.

Thanks (I did use the searchbox here and didn't see it listed in the results. I guess I somehow missed the post last week.)

Just noticed application is open and didn't see it posted before. Also, wasn't sure whether to make this TellHN.

I agree with you, esp since it seems you were a solo presenter. It is good to have at least one teammate if you can find, because again, the statistics do not favor lone founders.
jc123··on Garry Kasparov, the Man Who Would Be King
Probably better to stick to admiring his masterpieces. From his twitter, here's one "innovation": http://www.kasparov.com/chess-archeology-in-montenegro

He had many innovations and this last one is in quotes because apparently it was discovered 35 years ago.

jc123··on Ask HN: Will YC ever fund another YC?
I think it's possible that they could fund an innovative, perhaps decentralized, somewhat crowdfunded, YC-like DAO (decentralized autonomous organization).
jc123··on BitcoinJS
Bitpay does like your work. Will you sometimes contribute to one of the existing projects or prefer that they keep integrating your work? The former is sometimes more efficient, possibly more impactful. I don't think it will be great for community if there are too many JS bitcoin libs: 3 might be ok but IMO it's close to a reasonable practical limit.

jc123··on What Is a Bitcoin, Really?
> "A private key is nothing but a large pseudorandom number roughly between 1 and 2^256

Note: Nearly every 256-bit number is a valid private key. Specifically, any 256-bit number between 0x1 and 0xFFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFE BAAE DCE6 AF48 A03B BFD2 5E8C D036 4141 is a valid private key.

The range of valid private keys is governed by the secp256k1 ECDSA standard used by Bitcoin.

Source is the Bitcoin wiki, https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Private_key which surprisingly isn't listed as one of the references in the post.

jc123··on What Is a Bitcoin, Really?
> You can make the argument that the long term value of BTC is zero because there's nothing that guarantees it continued existence, like US law guarantees the existence of the dollar.

The Internet guarantees the continued existence of BTC.

jc123··on Git 2.0
Git is remarkably deep in its functionality that its possible to learn something new about it on a weekly or even daily basis: if you have the time. Whenever you are trying to manipulate code, there is usually a clean way of doing it in git if one takes the time to master its power. Next time you have such a problem, if you have the time, take the opportunity and you'll probably pleased at learning something new instead of using what you currently know about git plus a workaround or two.
