jbmorgado··on Is the keyboard faster than the mouse?
For me isn't just the fact that using the keyboard is faster to carry out a specific task, it is also that in Vim (or most places using a good keyboard layout) I don't have to take my fingers out of the home row and then carrying out the next action is also faster.
jbmorgado··on Silicon Valley's dirty little secret: The way it treats women
> "Edit: Ok you guys, point taken, s/insults/flamebait/ above. Late-night misstep!"

Perhaps you should calm down a bit instead of constantly policing HN for thought-crime.

There is a difference between moderating and constantly shutting down everyone that doesn't agree with your strict views of the world (i.e. what you've just did) while giving a stage to the ones that propagate your ideology (i.e. those flags you keep removing from opinionated and non factual posts).

jbmorgado··on A new hypothesis in medicine: give patients drugs they know don’t work
The thing is, homeopathy claims to heal all kinds of illness (cancer for instance), while the author of this study leaves it very, very clearly that it only works on the perception of illness by the mind.

He clearly states that the placebo won't work in quantifiable illnesses because those quantifiable effects don't depend on the perception from your brain.

jbmorgado··on Chicago taxi industry sliding towards collapse
The difference is that when my former cab driver sits to drive an Uber/Lyft he knows he will be rated at the end and he also knows he can't rip me off in the fare or refuse to pass a receipt in the end.

Most of all, is the accountability I care for. The accountability that he didn't had to care about as a taxi driver but that cares very much when he drives an Uber.

jbmorgado··on Advantages of Using R Notebooks for Data Analysis Instead of Jupyter Notebooks
The team working on Spyder (the Python closest alternative to RStudio) have something like R Notebooks in their roadmap for a while now, but it keeps being pushed into the future.

I wish they could use RStudio for a while and understand just how important is the feature for someone using Python for research.

jbmorgado··on [dead]
We use Skype for conferences between my lab and the ones we work closely with.

I try to get them to change to Tox (https://tox.chat/) but it's not easy sincerely, since only very few of us use Linux exclusively and understand the problems with trying to work with Skype (basically we use the web version but can't use video in the conferences) on other OS other than Windows.

jbmorgado··on “Let her speak please”
It baffles me that moderators keep blocking the community and remove flags form these kind of totally non factual and opinionated posts, and then go and themselves flag highly voted fact based posts that make it to the first page of HN - like they did some weeks ago about the code capabilities of IT grads in India.

It is almost like the moderators in HN have a clearly defined and very limited political range of ideological opinions they believe in and that they only allow anyone else to express - or even discuss about - their personal opinions if they mirror those of the moderators.

jbmorgado··on List of Printers Which Do or Do Not Display Tracking Dots
I was actually discussing this the other day at work (I work in a relatively small laboratory of about 50 people and we don't have a dedicated IT department so most of us contribute a bit to keep the IT infrastructure).

It is incredible how fickle printers are, all the hassle they give, printing problems, network connection problems, special drivers to install even on modern operating systems, paper jams (one would have guessed by now they should have at least solved the paper jams) even on our quite expensive printers.

It's like everything but the print quality got stuck in the year 2000 and never again evolved.

jbmorgado··on LibreOffice leverages Google’s OSS-Fuzz to improve quality of office suite
We keep all the finished documents in a document managing system in more than one format. There in no danger of loosing those even if google shuts down Google Docs somewhere in the future.
jbmorgado··on LibreOffice leverages Google’s OSS-Fuzz to improve quality of office suite
In big scientific projects we are now using Google Docs.

Although not a totally Open Source workflow, it does provide the possibility of using it in any system we personally work and makes sharing and editing documents from various parties much easier.

For me, this signals a paradigm shift at least in academia where we would normally use open source in various places, but revert to Office to write collaboration documents and proposals (and even scientific papers in some areas like biology).

jbmorgado··on Browse Against the Machine
Well, using Google docs/sheets the difference is really big. I understand that Chrome should be heavily optimised to use other Google products like Google Sheets, but in the end, as a user it really makes a diference.

On a Macbook Pro from 2015, entering a simple Google Sheets documents and have the page fully loaded and ready to work takes me ~8 seconds on Chromium, but ~17 seconds on Firefox. It's really a huge diference.

Still, I'm trying to use Firefox more and more because of privacy considerations, but Mozilla really should up their game and have more focus in their roadmap.

jbmorgado··on 3D-printed antenna radiation patterns in color [video]
These 3D prints are amazingly perfect compared to what I've been able to achieve. With what methods/hardware can I achieve something similar when it comes to shape/texture?

What about the colours?

jbmorgado··on AMD Announces Ryzen Update: Enables Memory Clocks Up to DDR4-4000

jbmorgado··on The Nature of Code (2012)
This is great, didn't know about p5js. About 2 years ago I was searching for something similar to Processing in Python, but couldn't find anything that was suitable.

Perhaps someone knows some project that has filled that gap.

jbmorgado··on Last major primeval forest in Europe on 'brink of collapse'
You are totally out of your depth, you don't even understand what you are talking about and you are making a ridiculous argument in defence of destroying an invaluable ecological heritage.

This is PRIMEVAL forest. You in Poland DON'T have more protected areas than most of other EU countries already, you just happen to have a small one (relative to other EU countries) that has the special status of being primeval and you still think it's ok to destroy it for some quick profit while the rest of EU is trying to rebuild their own forest (although unfortunately it just can't be primeval again).

jbmorgado··on Which GPU(s) to Get for Deep Learning
The question is not AMD's processing power, the question is the tools available for AMD cards, which are scant to say the best.

While AMD doesn't create something like cuDNN to go along with their cards, no real work will start being done in porting most important DL libraries to AMD cards. And even in that case, it will be a lost generation for AMD, only in the 2nd generation where AMD actually offers a real alternative in DL to NVIDIA, you will start to see some real progress being done with it.

jbmorgado··on Sweden drops Julian Assange rape investigation
You "believe".

I wonder how that comment would work on any other discussion on HN. You know, those ones where you are actually supposed to be rational instead of just going around with virtue signalling.

It is quite telling of the general lack of coherence about social matters in HN when in all cases of supposed sexual harassment against woman, there is a PC crowd in HN that just goes around spreading and enforcing (trough voting) the moto of "guilty until proven innocent", even in cases obviously so blatantly manipulated for political reasons as this.

jbmorgado··on Sweden drops Julian Assange rape investigation
"All he did is use political asylum to avoid facing charges of a sexual assault."

All they did was use sexual assault charges in order to force him into political asylum.

jbmorgado··on To Become a Better Investor, Think Like Darwin
"The Egyptians built some beautiful pyramids, but they did that with hundreds of thousands of slaves over decades."

This is now actually disproved. Made me doubt quite a bit about if the rest of the article (and his book) is actually based on any evidence or just the author's personal views.

jbmorgado··on Visual Studio for Mac
I can't really understand the full depth from the announcement, but to me this looks like something that already existed for a few years, Xamarin.

What are the diferences between this product and Xamarin for MacOS (something that already existed)?

The NVIDIA K1 Shield is pretty nice and I really like its form factor. I have it flashed with Lineage OS though.
jbmorgado··on Guy Finds StarCraft Source Code and Returns It to Blizzard
I think we are mixing two terms here: Intelectual Property and Trade Secrets.

The code doesn't seem protected by intellectual property but it's a trade secret. Just like Mona Lisa was intellectual property of Leonardo, but the way he created the different paint colours was his trade secret.

A trade secret don't necessarily have to be protected by law, the moment it gets out, then people are free to use it as they see fit. That's what I think about this source code: it got out somehow (even if the way it got out was illegal or not), but the moment it comes to public it becomes general knowledge.

jbmorgado··on Why My New Professional War Camera Is a Cheap Chinese Knockoff
Not only sensor size but the ergonomics. I agree that in daylight my iPhone 6S is basically as good as my somewhat older Nikon, but the way you handle them both in order to take a photo really play into the final quality of the image.

The phone will always be like a tiny window to the world, while the camera is more of an extension of my eye. Might be a personal take, but for me it makes a lot of diference and it shows in my photos.

jbmorgado··on Modern “Hackintoshes” show that Apple should probably just build a Mac tower
I think the OP was referring that he doesn't care about the design of the machine, not that he doesn't care about design as in development.
jbmorgado··on Why Deutsche Bundesbank had to promise to leave 1200 tons of gold in New York
I'm not really understanding what is going on here and the article doesn't address that:

1 - Why do Germany and Netherlands even store their gold in the USA?

2 - Why shall the USA/FED have any saying about Germany wanting their property back anyway? It's like me having to negotiate with my bank weather I can or not withdrawal my money from there.

Please give me a break, the great majority of the Turks living in Germany (just as an example) not only voted yes in the referendum but after it won there were major celebrations on the streets of a lot of big German cities by Turks living there.

Please stop this nonsense of trying to pretend it's always somebody else's fault other than the majority of the Turks. They choose to transform their country in the mess it became.

jbmorgado··on Wikipedia blocked in Turkey
Seriously, stop trying to spread that notion that EU has to take care of everyone's problems. It doesn't!

If the majority of Turks are brainwashed enough to support a dictator, mass incarceration and ties of their government to terrorist organisations in order to appease their xenophoby towards the Kurdish minority, then make sure it's their problem and not the EU.

The only thing EU must do is make sure it doesn't blow up their way. When (not if) Turkey starts their civil war, just make sure you don't allow them in the EU after they willingly destroyed their own country after decades of EU trying to help them solve their internal problems by increasing democratic institutions there (and pouring a lot of money), but they very stubbornly resisting it and actually going the opposite way.

The world must stop looking at EU like they are the fireman of the world and at fault for all the arsonists the population keeps electing in Africa, the Middle East and even some parts of Eastern Europe.
