jblz··on Show HN: Untrusted, a JavaScript adventure game you play by modifying its source
Very fun. I found a bug that lets me skip levels 8-11 by using this code in the phone callback on level 7:

  if ( ! ( player.cc && player.cc.length ) ) {
       player.cc = ['#f00', '#ff0', '#0f0'];
  }
  player.setColor(player.cc.shift());
It says it's loading the next level, but the code and gamefield remain stuck on level 7 until you push it to level 12.
jblz··on Any female engineers in San Diego interested in showing my daughter their work?
Along these lines, the Botball program is a pretty amazing way to teach hands on engineering.

Bummer the OP just missed the 2014 Greater San Diego Tournament by a few days

jblz··on April Fools: migrate Apache Subversion project over to the git repo
This was the only April Fools gag that I even chuckled at this year. Good stuff :)
jblz··on Facebook can now read your texts
Looks like Twitter is doing something similar. One of the commenters here shows some decompiled code:

jblz··on Facebook can now read your texts
"Read your text messages (SMS or MMS) If you add a phone number to your account, this allows us to confirm your phone number automatically by finding the confirmation code that we send via text message."

That's a pretty crap feature to use to justify this.

jblz··on Skype blog hacked
Not sure why you say that. WordPress.com offers 2-Factor Auth:

There are also tons of available security plugins & pretty extensive documentation on hardening a self-hosted install:

jblz··on The Facebook experiment has failed
"It's (for me) evolved into my less-close friends' vacations and babies and memes."

This. Further, I think Fb serves a very important purpose in my life: it has supplanted any need or desire to attend a high school reunion. I can easily find out "what you've been up to" if I care in the slightest. Also, upvoted b/c babies are cute :)

jblz··on Why We'll Never Meet Aliens
...also, if you're traveling FTL, then time travel isn't that much of a stretch. So, ya.
jblz··on Why We'll Never Meet Aliens
This article assumes a lot:

* The aliens who possess the technological ability to reach Earth are the ones who built it and evolved alongside it. Who's to say they didn't take it by force?

* FTL is something that must be developed through technology. (i.e. discounting the possibility of naturally occurring wormholes)

* The aliens have no inherent desire for exploration

Yes, I've watched too much Sci-fi :)

jblz··on Booth Babes, Street Clothes, and GDC: Thanks But You sort of Made It Worse
In general, I try to give people the benefit of the doubt that they're knowledgeable about things they purport to be knowledgeable about. I don't think that's so different from the instant situation here.

Walking a crowded expo floor is a chore in and of itself (maybe more-so for introverts like myself :) ), but the '10 GDC I attended wasn't particularly challenging in this regard.

jblz··on Booth Babes, Street Clothes, and GDC: Thanks But You sort of Made It Worse
You're discounting the second half of the sentence you quoted:

> but barring that, selfish as it may sound, if I could have substituted all the plain-clothes promoters for traditional booth babes, I would have done it in a heartbeat.

Of course, progress isn't a panacea, but I'd take progress over the "old days," myself. I've personally seen the number of confidently technical women at conferences increase year over year for the past decade (please note, I'm not saying that the status quo is optimal, just that, in my experience, there _has_ been progress).

Moreover, the _title_ of the piece concludes with "Thanks But You sort of Made It Worse" which contradicts what you said.

jblz··on Booth Babes, Street Clothes, and GDC: Thanks But You sort of Made It Worse
If I'm understanding correctly, the author would prefer it if non-technical female expo floor workers were scantily-clad so she would be less likely to be assumed by other conference-goers to be non-technical herself..? I'm sorry, but I find that pretty offensive.

I don't claim to know what it's like to be a woman in a heavily male-dominated field (or just your de facto patriarchy, for that matter), but I also don't assume anyone I'm talking to at a conference has any reason to believe I possess any sort of prowess or authority without my convincing them of such even while donning my geekiest T-shirts.

More importantly, I assume anyone representing a product or service at a show is knowledgeable about its inner-workings until they give me some reason to believe otherwise regardless of their gender or attire.

While I appreciate that it is often difficult dealing with misogyny at conferences, I think it's unfair to lump a proper PR employee in with a model in a Princess Leia slave bikini who knows nothing about the product.

jblz··on WordPress 3.5 “Elvin” Released
Akismet, while a plugin, is included in the default WordPress install -- it just has to be activated. I'm not sure how a standalone install of WordPress would competently fight spam in the automated manner you're advocating. Since spam techniques are constantly evolving, it's a pretty challenging machine-learning problem to stay a step ahead. That's where services such as Akismet come in.

jblz··on Vanilla JS, fast, lightweight, cross-platform framework
Until Microsoft either discontinues support for Windows XP or releases a modern version of IE for it, libraries like jQuery are all but necessary, in my opinion.
jblz··on Pew Study: The Economy is lagging because the middle class is broke
I don't buy the contention that's being bandied about that "the middle class has shrunk in size." If you look at the Pew report, the relative size of the middle class is only established as a function of responses to a survey question asking people to self-identify into economic class.

Comparing the results of this sort of survey over time isn't scientifically supportive of that claim because there is not a universally accepted academic model for class -- even the experts disagree.

Ideally, IE8 should be your minimum. There's a large contingent of web users still on Windows XP and IE9+ is not available for it. XP is in extended support until 2014-08-14 & yes, I'm counting down the days.
