reminds me of an episode of planet money where they read a whole book that just entered public domain: https://www.npr.org/2021/01/14/956800308/the-great-gatsby
jbj··on Rare Greek Variables
I had a fantastic math professor in my bachelor of engineering program. Besides promising to do handstand in the last lecture if everybody submitted the teacher evaluation, he would tell math related anecdotes. One about a high school friend, whom just loved the concept of greek letters so much that he invented his own greek letters, upper and lower case. During his hand ins he would regularly define variables as his own invented letters, paw, py or ypricon, and alledgedly did so at his oral exam, causing the censor to be highly confused and embarrased to not be familiar with those characters.

For sure a think-out-of-the-box move, and a good prank for a math teacher

jbj··on GPD Pocket 3 – Handheld PC with KVM and RS-232
I honestly didnt have issues with the battery. Regarding their debian version, it was usable enough, but not user friendly emough, and getting window manager, decoration to handle maximized was such a puzzle.

I ended up with android 8.1 without their menu bar, it is okay for writing mails, or light termux stuff.

but my main issues are missing keyboard layout on remote desktops and concerns about lagging security updates.

jbj··on GPD Pocket 3 – Handheld PC with KVM and RS-232
I spent money on planet computers gemini, which I have been happy with, but one thing that came to a surprise to me was how the whole keyboard layout ecosystem works. If going into a remote desktop, the remote machine needs to support the layout of whatever device you use. If you plan to use it for coding, better verify before relying on it.

jbj··on OK Lenovo, we need to talk
I got one of their new linux supporting machins through their reseller, Digital River Ireland Ltd.

I set it up with dualboot since I hadn't run windows a while and needed a windows for a few things anyway.

Must say that windows 10 is not totally bad, but why must it be so blinky, and have an appstore with a front page of colourful games, and even autodownload candy crush?

anyways, the lenovo machine is greay with ubuntu, and the trackpoint work with both middle click as well as scroll, something I could only pick one of in wimdows.

besides other suggestions in this thread, have you checked out VOA? from America to the world?
jbj··on A search engine that favors text-heavy sites and punishes modern web design
What makes you find the user interface awful?

it is litterally a search website with a text box for a search term and a button to do the search.

jbj··on Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 review: Google smartwatch raises bar
I am using pebble time round and garmin fenix, both have their controls limited to buttons, which in my opinion is superior to a 'touch' interface.

the pebble has a transcription service for replying to messages by talking to the watch, converting the message to text to the receiver. Unfortunately the app development has declined since the hardware support seized. The software is maintained enough to keep usability for my usage.[i]

garmin fenix is obviously a choice for the exercise enthusiasts. however some features are very neat, like support for openstreetmaps[ii] and TOTP support [iii] The only thing I am worried about with garmin, is that I have a sense that the look their app is turning more and more 'toy-ish' and 'share-friendly' and less functionality focused. I guess this move can make new users feel comfortable, but If I just want to use the watch as a tool, I worry certain features will get more convoluted to use.

jbj··on European Super League collapsing as all six English clubs withdraw
As far as I have understood, the case is more that the current ecosystem ranging from complete novices and amateurs to the absolute pros would be segregated at the top level.

As it is right now, you could open your own football club with your buddies, and advance some 10-20 times and be in the top league.

jbj··on A Mathematical Keyboard Layout (2018)
interesting, the "Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator" MSKLC seems to be moved, I just downloaded it one month ago to setup US English Internaitional to be identical as what is found on linux.

jbj··on The Nokia N900: the future that wasn’t
I had an N800 and found it so amazing, 2 sd card slots, pop out camera that could rotate, and a useful kickstand. I recently found the Planet Computers devices and tried their first version out, it is conceptually a bit similar to the fxtec mentioned in the blog post.

jbj··on ISO 8601: a better date format
my birthday is at the end of the month, during a processing of a document for my US visa 10+ years ago, I was dealing with 2 different sites, one accomodating my local date formatting, and one fixed for the US standard. I was puzzled that I had been made 2 years younger when verifying my data, turned out my birth date of month was now month number 24+ of the year, pushing my birth ahead, and my birtb month had become my birth date of month.

These captchas must be contributing to the technological divide; If I am met with an endless loop identifying busses and fire hydrants, I know the only solution to prove I am not a robot is to change my internet connection (ie. by vpn)

I can't imagine this being a pleasant experience for anyone who is not well versed in digital technologies. Especially when having to do something essential.

jbj··on The unreasonable effectiveness of simple HTML
Talking about the sun ... We got a variant of those credit card sized NFC cards to check in to public transit, the issuer decided that they should have an expiry date. From what I remember reading in local tech news, the logic was that people bend/break them over time, making them have a measurable lifespan.

My card actually expired in the middle of the countryside, and phone support just told me to get a replacement in the nearest convenience store.

I could have been prepared for this if I had checked the expiry date and put it in my calendar, but how many people do this?

btw, apologies for typos in my post above, it went quick, and was typed on touch screen.

jbj··on The unreasonable effectiveness of simple HTML
Made me think of a time I didnt do adequate research before buying an expensive flight ticket: I was in Changi Airport and had a cheap return ticket to Malaysia, when I got back I was going to travel in the east coast of Australia for a few weeks as the end of my study abroad in Asia. It dawned to me that I never actually checked the Visa rules for Australia, but just pressumed that they would be like any othet commonweath country I had previously visited. Turned out I was lucky and didnt need a paper visa, but could do with an e-visa. As my HTC Desire Android phone had died in the humiddity, I only had the cheapest nokia I could find, X-1 ... Armed with a 2011 public internet kiosk of internet explorer, I tabulated through the australian immigration forms and found the correct form, filled it out while my browsing session of the kiosk expired, after a few tries, I knew exactly the way around the static site, and was what some would call "speedrunning" through their website. After sumbitting I just had to hope for the best. If that site had been required any more than it did, I am not sure I would have been able to submit my application through that public internet browser.
