jbj··on 2D Rubik’s Cube solution visualization
on a similar note, you can get yourself a 4D rubiks cube (projected into 3D)

It is not a 3x3x3x3 but 2x2x2x2.

It looks like Melinda (the inventor) have made them easier to obtain. back when I got one, 3D printed parts, magnets, and coating all came from different sources, but absolutely worth it, they are very unique and work well.

jbj··on Finally a good Linux tablet – Fydetab Duo
seems to have some issues, but also seems like someone is actually pushing https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface

would be interested to hear any expeiences among this crowd

jbj··on Spaceport Cornwall awarded licence to host UK’s first space launch
I always though that spaceports needed enormous area of ocean/desert or other inhabitat land to the immediate east to have potential crashes not endanger anyone. (east is due to the rotation direction of our planet)
jbj··on Symbian OS Kernel (2010)
saved up in high school to buy P1i (sony ericsson) and remember the feeling of being blown away when installing the first third party app, I think a weather app.
jbj··on Over 16k people still use a Pebble smartwatch
in addition to these, there may be watches without a rebble subscription being used with gadgetbridge which can work without internet
jbj··on Over 16k people still use a Pebble smartwatch
Have a pebble and a fenix, I got all of those set up on my pebble, and all but one of those things set up on fenix. Unfortunaltely the opensource barcode app for connectIQ only supports 1D barcodes and not QR codes.
jbj··on Over 16k people still use a Pebble smartwatch
another advantage on fenix is that you can use totp 2fa without keeping the phone connected - if the time ever drifts you can always sync it from satellites
jbj··on Over 16k people still use a Pebble smartwatch
sadly it does not have support for /e/, graphene or similar.

My 3 last phones have been samsung, and after using /e/ I have no intent of getting an original samsung software again

jbj··on Show HN: Can Strava Do This?
cool project! reminds me of the Garmin virb overlays. An idea: some phones have ANT+ receiver, and can collect metrics from sports tech dongles, i.e. tire pressure, wheel rotations and pedal rotations, and probably even other small sensors as well.
jbj··on macOS 13 Ventura Third Party Product Compatibility Info
wish I had something like this previously when updated my old mac.
jbj··on Google is “concerned” that Samsung is losing customers to Apple
Installing /e/ on my galaxy made me appreciate the phone much more, can realy reccomend this OS.
jbj··on AI-driven thermal cameras used to obtain passwords
not if that machine is an ATM
jbj··on gPodder: A simple, open-source podcast client
gPodded is pretty neat, I have tried it on Sailfish (and likely also long time ago on N800 with maemo)

I just discovered podverse from browsing f-droid a few days ago, has some similarities with pocket cast which I have been using since before they were sold the first time.

You can also use the news app for nextcloud to show podcasts along with rss news stories, if you are looking for something along those lines.

I actually just submitted the podverse link for discussion here just a few mins ago, so I am pasting a link:

jbj··on Show HN: The iPhone 14 Index
since individual states in the US have different sales tax, and supposely also not the same overall median income, I wonder if this information would give any interesting insight.
jbj··on How far can you go by train in 5h?
Amazing map.

Hovering around over South Sweden and North Germany, makes it quite obvious that the Femern tunnel will make a difference in connecting that area.

Same for connecting north from Lombardy through the mountains.

jbj··on Scientists discover new “origins of life” chemical reactions
For those who find this subject fascinating and want more origin of life chemistry, I recommend to find a video of Jack Szostack giving a presentation after he got his Nobel price.
jbj··on Ask HN: What’s a good laptop for software development at around $2k?
I got a lenovo P15 last year with some of the cheapest specs in that price range.

It has official ubuntu support, and you can get under the hood to add ram/ssd later.

jbj··on Everyone gets numbers wrong, even the New York Times
reporting news from english sources in continental Europe, it happens that billion is incorrectly translated to billion instead of milliard, causing a factor 1000 to appear out of nowhere. (do your own math for trillions)

The one in the example may be a brain fart, but so many other errors could be prevented by standardizing a few things ... decimals and thousand sepatators is another one

jbj··on Universal's Audible Watermark (2012)
2012-01-10 with updates in 2013 and 2015
jbj··on Why does Google use location for language rather than browser settings?
Same annoyance since I remember learning about the internet, and realizing the language for computers with the least friction is US english.

One thing I found extremely bizare is that `wget` on my work computer gives status and error messages in my local language.

I have no clue how it ended up like this, but I am suspecting it is due to the usage of a local mirror of macports.

jbj··on The definitive guide that you never wanted: Backpack fabrics (2017)
seems to work fine without as well, could it be related to the platform "medium"?
jbj··on The definitive guide that you never wanted: Backpack fabrics (2017)
a week ago, I came across this user submitted gallery of homemade hiking gear:

http://www.extremtextil.de/naehprojekte/kunden-galerie.html

some of them are quite impressive

jbj··on Ask HN: What do you do to jump start your brain in the morning?
20+ min of medium/high heart rate (bicycle commute, or morning jog).

For the dark scandinavian mornings, I sometimes use 5 min in front of a cheap therapy lamp.

jbj··on Google requiring all ‘G Suite legacy free edition’ users to start paying
looking forward to more attention on nextcloud plugins!
jbj··on Has Anyone Summited the 14 Highest Mountains?
There are countries that give great cash rewards for earning an olympic medal. This can help them bring pride and attention to the country. So as you suggest, I also think it is rather for boosting prestige
jbj··on OsmAnd 4.1 adds inital support for Android Auto
very interesting, thanks for sharing.
jbj··on OsmAnd 4.1 adds inital support for Android Auto
I am surprised they don't keep a link to the download on f-droid, it seems to be there, and provided by them.
jbj··on Sending SMS Messages Through the ISS (2020)
sorry, this is not really my field, but I think it has some support in one way: http://aprs.org/othernet.html
jbj··on Sending SMS Messages Through the ISS (2020)
I read about something called othernet that allows receving those messages with a parabolic antenna
jbj··on Miniature 3456 LED Cube
another "screen saver" idea could be a self solving rubiks cube
