jbergstroem··on The JetStream 2 Benchmark Suite
lazyweb: arewefastyet.com from mozilla used to visualize performance differences between chrome, safari/webkit and firefox. Safari used to come out on top. Is this still the case? Is there perhaps another site where one can follow these browser races?
jbergstroem··on Atlassian Acquires AgileCraft for $166M
At my clients, they swear by jira workflows (that's the name, right?). The mindset of "customize everything" seems to be impossible to impact. A strong second is managerial heaven plugins with unlimited ways of clicking and visualizing other peoples clicks. Not sure how to compete with that; it's basically disagreeing about the curvature of the earth.
jbergstroem··on Cloudflare Raises $150M and Adds to Board of Directors
Coverage is a Big Deal. Fastly used to be pretty unavailable in South America but has since last year improved coverage (esp via west, in Chile).

I'd also like to add that with Cloudflare workers the technology lead of fastly (VCL, edge configuration) has reduced significantly.

Note about bias: I've used both cdn's for years but mostly opt for Cloudflare today.

jbergstroem··on Bye, Bye, Google
For those who host their own email (read: use your own domain for incoming), I'd like to remind/raise awareness about using `.io` which had two pretty serious security incidents recently (<3 years). Last incident: https://thehackerblog.com/the-io-error-taking-control-of-all...
jbergstroem··on HTTP/3: from root to tip
Yes, the railgun comment was why I wanted to elaborate on the subject. Thanks for your insight.
jbergstroem··on HTTP/3: from root to tip
I didn't mean to imply that it is competing with open web standards; I apologize if it came out that way. I was trying to make the case that for instance performance benefits in http3 wouldn't apply to the connection that Argo maintains to origin since it is a different protocol and what your thoughts was on this.
jbergstroem··on HTTP/3: from root to tip
How do you see argo tunnel fit in this scope? It obviously has other features (cert management, internal routing) - but you'd have to keep competing against http standards with your protocol, no?
jbergstroem··on HTTP/3: from root to tip
The second paragraph opens up with a “what is quic” and links to another post. Perhaps give that a read?
jbergstroem··on The cult of rotary mixers
I own a Model 1 (http://playdifferently.org/model-1/). The overall feel is very "analog" and the faders are by far the best I've ever used. The "filter" approach (LPF,HPF) is also hard to live without.

With that said -- not going to lie, still remember the sets I've done on the Radius 4 or Rane's. The feeling creates a totally different experience and it changes the way you mix. Casual, fun - "closer" to the audience somehow.

jbergstroem··on Firefox desktop market share now below 9%
Dear lazyweb: How can I make my favorite browser - Firefox - use MacOS's native full-screen when clicking "full screen" in a video? Thanks for your reply.
jbergstroem··on Upgrading GitHub from Rails 3.2 to 5.2
As a comparison, here's gitlab's journey (issue opened March, 2016): https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-ce/issues/14286

Looks like the first scheduled milestone was 9.5 (a year ago) and the current is set for 11.4 (next release).

jbergstroem··on GoPro Hero 7
Tech specs and Hero evolution aside I feel the marketing department made a great video. Makes me want to go out and Do Stuff. While recording it.

(edit) Put differently: I think they really hit the nail on the head from a branding and association ("I also want to") perspective. There's definitely a market gap to wrestle about here.

jbergstroem··on MacBook Pro with faster performance and new features for pros
I wonder if the previous model keyboard repairs will get the third gen keyboard at some point (didn't see any info about this)?
jbergstroem··on Serverless Performance: Cloudflare Workers, Lambda and LambdaEdge
I'm using cloudflare workers to "polyfill" client hints if they're missing with cookie logic. With their addition of being able to mutate cache keys via edge workers I find it to be a extremely powerful way of everything from per-device image optimization (or google data saver or hidpi support) to serving different pages for the same uri based on your requirements (and storing this in cache).
jbergstroem··on Alpine Linux 3.8.0 released
Note: doesn't seem to be available on docker hub as of yet.
jbergstroem··on ‘You can't use Brotli for dynamic content’ and other misconceptions
This together with cache-control: immutable is a great bandwidth saver: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Headers/Ca...
jbergstroem··on ‘You can't use Brotli for dynamic content’ and other misconceptions
Does Cloudflare pass a dictionary when compressing for your clients? Would be interesting to hear about excursions in testing dictionary sizes/variations at that scale.
jbergstroem··on ‘You can't use Brotli for dynamic content’ and other misconceptions
Speaking of Cloudflare, they do brotli encoding for you at the free tier. Not sure about other CDN's but I'm sure it's a matter of time.
jbergstroem··on ‘You can't use Brotli for dynamic content’ and other misconceptions
If you want to attempt building nginx with brotli support, let me save you 15 minutes: Google's original module is more or less abandoned. Look here instead: https://github.com/eustas/ngx_brotli

Another alternative is exploring h2o/caddy as a web server replacement.

jbergstroem··on GitLab Isn’t Really Open-Source
I think the Atlassian stack "wins" in the ~200-500 users range for enterprise companies but price doubles if you want the "cloud edition" (read: run on more than one vm). I asked for a few quotes of the gitlab EEU (ultimate) edition and found prices competitive.
jbergstroem··on Ask HN: Emergency, site down. Whats the best GUI for ubuntu server mysql?
Dump the database and replace all http urls; for instance: `sed -i -e 's|http://mysite.com/|https://mysite.com/|g' mydump.sql` and reimport it. Most often, there's always one setting that doesn't get switched.

(keep a copy of the original db just in case)

jbergstroem··on Hijack of Amazon’s domain service used to reroute web traffic for two hours
As I mentioned in the previous thread; DNS lookups via Azure also seemed to be affected.
jbergstroem··on AWS Route53 is down
I saw issues resolving via azure dns servers (i have gitlab runners on there) as well:

ssh 10.0.1.7 ping -c 1 github-production-release-asset-2e65be.s3.amazonaws.com

ping: github-production-release-asset-2e65be.s3.amazonaws.com: Temporary failure in name resolution```

jbergstroem··on Gitlab 10.7 Released
I explained poorly. I ran into issues with updating jemalloc as part of a software update. While debugging the issue I disabled jemalloc (unsetting the ld_preload) and noticied a sharp difference in how much memory ruby had allocated. I guess _pre_allocating is incorrect and a better explanation is _not releasing it_. Thanks for rebutting my argument and giving me the opportunity to elaborate.
jbergstroem··on Gitlab 10.7 Released
It might be worth mentioning that they use jemalloc which greedily allocates memory. I "found out" while running into an issue and disabled it[1] which shaved a fair amount of memory from allocation. At the end of the day I guess it didn't matter - for me - seeing how I didn't need that memory for anything else.

Also, the cookbook for setting up postgres also takes your total ram into account.

jbergstroem··on United States v. Microsoft Corp. Dismissed [pdf]
I've been using tilaa as a mail host for about ten years now; its a vm/storage provider based out of Amsterdam. I at least tell myself that my data is relatively safe there.
jbergstroem··on Another reason why Docker containers may be slow
Last I used Illumos it had pretty poor hardware support (at least at entry to midlevel hardware which for obvious reasons must be a less important priority). I also ran into issues with their KVM port; mainly panics with various linux kernels (kvm clock, virt*, ..). Good experience in general though, especially the zones/zfs/kvm combo.
jbergstroem··on Pgbench results: PostgreSQL on AWS RDS is 2+ times faster than Aurora
Would be interesting to see Azure in this table now that their managed postgres is GA. I've had a "mixed experience" using it during preview, both from performance and troubleshooting perspectives.
jbergstroem··on Run JavaScript on Cloudflare with Workers
I wish routing and page rules had rudimentary regex support like VCL or most other location matching route libraries/servers.
