jbb67··on Microsoft calls for a closer look at app stores
Great. Presumably microsoft will also be opening up their xbox to run whatever software I like without going through them too then?
jbb67··on Show HN: Offset – Credit card powered by trust between people
Perhaps it needs a test net so you can try out buying imagineary things on a real network while not risking real currency.

I guess actually though, you could do this with the real thing, just use a TEST currency that has no value and let people sell imaginary things for that. Then random people would be happy to be lose this fake currncy for something they didn't know.

jbb67··on Show HN: Offset – Credit card powered by trust between people
Is there any way to do anything with this right now? Is there anything you can buy or sell with it? Do I need real life friends to use this so I can set up "trust" as this will be a problem preventing me from even trying it out? (I have friends, just not ones that will try this)
jbb67··on Collapse OS – Why Forth?
I want to learn forth now. Where can I find a modern usable forth that works well on windows to make real programs? Does such a thing even exist?
jbb67··on Show HN: Offset – Credit card powered by trust between people
this looks really interesting and an awesome idea. I downloaded the app but then realized that with nobody I know using it, and nobody I can buy things from using it, I literally can't do anything with it.

any ideas how to use it for ...anything..?

jbb67··on WinUI – The modern native UI platform of Windows
I don't know about anyone else but when I get a new program and it turns out to be using a "modern" looking API I just assume it's going to be awful. Not just the UI but everything about it. I've rarely been wrong.
jbb67··on Wealthy mortgage borrowers face cold shoulder from lenders
I two years I imagine the same lenders will be complaining that they drove away all their most profitable, low risk customers because of a short term risk issue.
jbb67··on The Lobster Programming Language
Oh this looks rather nice. I'll have to take a look at this.
jbb67··on Really, Google? (Or Why We Can’t Have Nice Wireless Networks)
I expect to read next that they blocked port 80 too because "security" and it's Google's fault they can't get to web sites now.
jbb67··on FPGA meets 6502
This isn't simulating a 6502, this is how to connect and test a "real" one to your FPGA
jbb67··on Is it time to rewrite the operating system in Rust? [slides]
no.
jbb67··on Monzo, a U.K. challenger bank, raises £85M Series E
If they had a proper banking website and didn't expect you to use an "app" on your phone I might be more interested.
jbb67··on Micro.blog
While this looks interesting the website doesn't really say much about about what it is or what it provides...
jbb67··on The D Language Front-End Merged Into GCC 9
Great news.

Although given that gdc is already a thing I can install and use today, what practical difference does it make?

jbb67··on DevOops, some common anti-patterns
I think sometimes they are implemented as a solution looking for a problem. I've seen many times when the automated solution is much more complicated than the manual solution. Sure, it's more reliable, except that it breaks when you change something.

The tools are good, but use them when you need them and when they help, not just because someone told you it was best practice.

jbb67··on Federal prosecutors have filed new charges against swatter Tyler Barriss
Good. Although I'd also very strongly question the extreme overreaction to unverified allegations that make this kind of thing possible.
jbb67··on Thermometer Tells Your Temperature, Then Tells Firms Where to Advertise
It might not be listening to you but it's almost certainly reporting on everything you do on it, your location, your contacts etc all the time.
jbb67··on GitHub: October 21 Incident Report
Ugh I detest the term " abundance of caution " as used in that message. Weasel words designed to stop you thinking about the problem as who wouldn't want them to be overly cautious
jbb67··on Kidney Stones Are More Beautiful Than You Might Think
While there are a few things that _might_ slow the formation a bit, there isn't anything that will dissolve already formed stones of the most common type (calcium oxolate). Some of the less common stone types like uric acid stones do have possible treatments in some cases.

Just drinking a lot more water is the only treatment that really does help slow or stop the formation for many people.

jbb67··on 6 days until the EU votes on an extinction-level event for the internet
I don't get the hate for this. It mostly seems to be saying that if you publish stuff on the internet it's your responsibility to take reasonable steps to ensure that it's not stolen and that you actually have the right to publish it.

This seems entirely reasonable to me.

jbb67··on Kitty – a fast, featureful, GPU based terminal emulator
I don't even know where to start with this. We had terminals that were way faster than you could type or see 30 years ago. They didn't need a GPU and ran on a CPU 1000 times slower than what we have now.

If this is progress... I'm not sure I want it

jbb67··on Bail reform could give justice to poor, minorities
How does this work in other counties such as the UK?
jbb67··on Redefining dilution
This seems to be missing something very important to me. Yes if your ownership goes from 10% to 8% but of a more valuable company you don't lose money. But presumably you were hoping the company would do well and be worth 10 times as much in the future, and your 2% loss of that future value is much more significant.
jbb67··on ActivityPub could be the future
The difference is that you can still communicate with your friends on their instances
jbb67··on Pop_OS 18.04: the state of the art in GNU/Linux on desktop
I like almost none of this and disagree very strongly with many of the assertions of what is good and what is bad.

I imagine this is the last we'll hear of this anyway

jbb67··on Chrome 68 Released: HTTP Sites Marked as “Not Secure”
Goodbye chrome then. Basically corporate scumbags pushing their own agenda with just enough plausibility that the gullible will help push their agenda for them.

What happened to "do no evil". Seems to be all google do now.

jbb67··on MacBook Pro with i9 chip is throttled due to thermal issues, claims YouTuber
So... they discovered that there is a reaason that desktop computers have a large heatsink with a fan many times larger attached... Don't buy a laptop and expect it's sustained performance to be anywhere near that of a proper desktop computer. It simply won't be
jbb67··on Tardigrade protein helps human DNA withstand radiation (2016)
I wonder what the cost is. If producing a protein that protects against these things was without a downside, it seems likely many species would have selected for it. I feel there must be a downside to it that selects against it in most organisms.
jbb67··on Chrome will mark all HTTP sites as ‘not secure’ starting in July
Bye bye chrome. You were useful until you started pushing your agenda on everyone
jbb67··on Mark Zuckerberg and his empire of oily rags
I don't get this article at all. It talk about brexit, yet we voted for it despite all the incredible amount of lies being spread about it being a bad thing.
