jazzyjackson··on LeCun has "zero concerns" about AI wiping out humanity, recent "rogue" incidents
Right, the doomsayers suppose as soon as you reach 10^16 connections across silicon you’ll end up with a living mind with goals of its own… poppycock I say
jazzyjackson··on Car is a smartphone on wheels. Here's who's listening
Huh? My 2019 vehicles have GPS that works completely without data uplink. Trouble is map updates (distributed on SD cards) are being discontinued in favor of cellular subscription services that don’t work in the desert.
jazzyjackson··on ICC judge on what U.S. sanctions mean for her and global courts
You can’t convince me that this administration isn’t intentionally driving this country into the ground. Our whole economic growth story is basically that our tech companies can provide service to 8 billion people, not just 0.35 B Americans. Moves like this makes buying American (or even just watching YouTube) toxic.

Edit: not to mention moving our allies toward not complying with US sanctions at all, reducing American soft power

It’s really quite ugly
jazzyjackson··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
You don’t have to block the signal line of sight in the air, you only need to overpower it from literally anywhere on the ground. I’m ignorant to laser comms so maybe off axis light can be filtered. The paper I posted said it would be simple.
jazzyjackson··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
If you’re receiving data optically from a space based laser, yes you are quite vulnerable to your detector being jammed by a much closer laser that doesn’t have to be nearly as powerful to add noise to the signal.

Why do you think GPS is so easy to spoof?

Actually I just googled (clauded?) to learn more about space lasers and found a paper describing interrupting quantum key distribution (tamper evident but not jam proof!) with a 1kw laser on the ground pointed at the satellite! So it really does not take many photons to fuck up an encrypted signal.

jazzyjackson··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
You don’t have to intercept the satellites in orbit, they fall back to earth in a few years on their own. What SpaceX et al need to defend against is attacks while they are still on the ground or seconds after launch. Next round of investment will put the factories on the moon (only then will we see calls from the general public to Blow Up the Moon)
jazzyjackson··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
This idea that space is a way to get out of the reach of NIMBYs is so dumb.

a: now you’re in everyone’s back yard, since satellites in orbit can be seen by the naked eye at twilight zipping across the sky, so now the whole earth hates you

b: you are still launching from earth, which is a pretty significant target if you’re worried about ecoterrorism.

Why not just wait til reviews are out, no need to give an interest free loan to a for profit company
jazzyjackson··on Minimal Phone 2
Very different aspect ratio. I can’t stand the regular iphones it’s impossible to use one handed without using that dumb flick gesture to bring the top of the screen down to the bottom half
jazzyjackson··on Minimal Phone 2
Personally I just tell everyone to contact me by email. It’s the only thing that I’m sure will still work in 20 years.

But of course I have signal for group chats. it works on desktop tho so I can just check messages when I get home like the olden days.

GPS I like my offline maps built into my car. It’s getting harder to find updates as everyone moves to the cloud.

jazzyjackson··on Minimal Phone 2
Personally I like the 21:9 ratio of Sony’s Xperia 1. Big but skinny enough to reach my thumb across.

jazzyjackson··on Palantir's Karp: AI needs to have 'reasonable guidelines,'
All these guidelines are removing agency from the human operator. The model should be aligned to following instructions. All of this effort to force the model into refusing certain conversations is training it to disobey its operator.

OpenAI and Anthropic investors are looking for brand safety, they just don’t want to be mentioned in a news article about an anthrax attack or whatever. I’m very curious if the alignment researchers themselves share the intention with the investors to make chatbots that have a mind of their own to judge what they should or shouldn’t do, instead of just doing what they’re told.

jazzyjackson··on Show HN: AttaLambda: a language where types and data are made of untyped lambdas

What was some of your background before this project and any other books you recommend?

jazzyjackson··on 25 years of mass surveillance is enough
The peaceful tour of the capital by pro American demonstrators (sorry, peak Americans) interrupted the proceedings. They were very close to pulling off a strategy of having the senate override the vote, if they hadn’t reconvened before midnight and had Pence left the Capitol like secret service were urging him to do.

Anyway this argument has occurred a thousand times on these boards so if you saw January 6 as peaceful and harmless I can’t change your mind.

jazzyjackson··on OpenAI’s Navier-Stokes release included a Lean 4 formal proof
Has it not been the usual process to snapshot a model to use for inference while continuing to run the training process? I guess you can’t add to the training corpus once you begin? Just trying to make sense of whether training begins or ends as rigidly as you suggest.
jazzyjackson··on Silicon Valley is transforming the military-industrial complex?
The ENIAC press demo, essentially the first public demo of an “electromechanical brain”, just ran parabolas to estimate artillery trajectory. (It also involved the genius addition of ping pong balls secured to each lamp on the machine, so as to be more legible to the reporters and photographers)

jazzyjackson··on GrapheneOS Overhauled Default Apps and Secure Clipboard
Yes but there are different specs that “compatible” apps will have to adhere to, basically until everyone is always running auto updating software to the latest version supporting RCS 4.0

Long story short somebody preferred to “ship it” instead of waiting to figure out how to make encryption compatible between iOS and Android. I guess there’s some differences in how the key rings work, but Signal can figure it out and /they’re/ open source so it sucks they ever supported unencrypted messages. They just wanted to say it technically worked for rich text messages and reactions.

jazzyjackson··on GrapheneOS Overhauled Default Apps and Secure Clipboard
Right, they are adhering to a definition of open that includes free as in liberty, so licensing matters. What good is it to read the source if I don’t have rights to modify and redistribute?
jazzyjackson··on An Alien Mind
Apparently the creators think it’s quite good at suggesting a diagnosis given a medical history and symptoms, tho of course this is the most ethically fraught area to provide healthcare information (both for exposure of personal data and risk of misdiagnosis, plus is it “aligned” to the patient or the insurance provider?) - unfortunately healthcare being as inaccessible as it is, the 90% correct chatbots will enthusiastically fill the void at great savings.
