jazzychad··on Ask HN: Best alternatives to Google Analytics in 2021?
A couple of friends of mine are building Firstparty - https://firstpartyhq.com - the idea is to serve the analytics code/cookie from your own domain (hence, first party). I've been using them for some of my websites and mobile apps. The reporting is nascent at the moment, but it is being built at a fast pace.
jazzychad··on Core Data and iCloud Sync example iOS project
In the course of building an app, I ran into many brick walls and learned way too much about Core Data, iCloud sync, Collection and Table Views, and Diffable Data Sources.

There is documentation for each of those individually, but I could find no clear and simple example project that ties them all together in a neat little bow. So I wrote this example starter project to help others who want to accomplish the same thing.

jazzychad··on Show HN: I made an app to draw stickers for iMessage, Discord, and Slack
FB Messenger doesn't support custom stickers (that I'm aware of). If it does, please let me know!
jazzychad··on Show HN: I made an app to draw stickers for iMessage, Discord, and Slack
hmm, is it possible to send me a screenshot of the other device (to the email in my profile)? it could be a couple different things happening, easier to diagnose if I can see.
jazzychad··on Show HN: I made an app to draw stickers for iMessage, Discord, and Slack
This should certainly work already if your iPad and iPhone are logged in to the same iCloud account. The stickers should sync automatically when you launch the app on the other device. Please let me know if it's not working for you!
jazzychad··on Show HN: I made an app to draw stickers for iMessage, Discord, and Slack
Great, thank you! I will look at the Telegram API/SDK.
jazzychad··on Show HN: I made an app to draw stickers for iMessage, Discord, and Slack
Hi HN, I hope you will enjoy this app. I was inspired to make it because my daughter likes to make little doodles on my iPad, and I thought it would be fun to add a "sticker" effect so they stand out better against a solid background... then I thought it would be fun to turn it into a Messages sticker app; next thing you know Sticker Doodle was born.

I launched the app with translations in English, Spanish, German, Italian, Arabic, Japanese, and Chinese. Everything is stored and sync'd with iCloud, and there is full support for dynamic text sizes and light/dark mode. I took great care to make it an app everyone around the world could use and enjoy.

I'm happy to answer questions or take feedback! Lots of features and updates already added to the todo list :)

jazzychad··on Show HN: I made an app to draw stickers for iMessage, Discord, and Slack
Thanks! I worked pretty hard to keep out all the cruft that lots of apps seem to have now. I wanted it to be used all around the world, so I wanted to be respectful of everyone's data limits and ensure it could be easily downloaded by as many people as possible.
jazzychad··on Show HN: I made an app to draw stickers for iMessage, Discord, and Slack
Thanks for the kind words and feedback!

Yeah, the photo tracing experience is the most contentious part of the app. Lots of similar feedback from lots of people. I will be improving that in the coming updates. The zoom/pan is definitely tricky b/c it conflicts with the drawing gesture, so panning isn't the easiest thing to accomplish. Again, planning to rethink how to make that better.

You should be able to long-press a sticker in the main view and get the same options menu for copying/etc.... does that work for you?

I'm also planning on supporting other messaging services like WhatsApp, Signal, Telegraph, etc...

jazzychad··on Ask HN: Tools you have made for yourself?
I made https://xbm.jazzychad.net as a simple online XBM image editor for use in various Arduino projects that use those little oled displays. It was also an excuse to learn React a few years ago.

jazzychad··on Jack Dorsey’s account was hacked
It was the provider that handled the SMS gateway for posting tweets through the 40404 short code. The prevailing theory is that his account was hijacked using SIM swapping, and the hijackers tweeted through SMS. Cloudhopper is still the name of the "twitter app" that gets attribution for tweets posted through SMS.
jazzychad··on Why Sleep Apnea Patients Rely on a CPAP Machine Hacker
echo'ing mabbo... there were no drugs involved in my study either.
jazzychad··on Why Sleep Apnea Patients Rely on a CPAP Machine Hacker
Curious why you won't do a sleep study? I recently went through this whole process, and it was pretty fascinating to see the data they collected from all the sensors (also confirming that I have mild OSA).
jazzychad··on How to Hire Your First Engineer
These are good points for finding your first engineer, but here is a tip for helping close your dream hire: offer more equity.

Your first eng hire will shoulder nearly all of the technical burden soon after as the founders transition into more of the non-technical roles (sales, outreach, recruiting, fundraising, business strategy). The amount of blood, sweat, and tears poured in by the first eng hire is somewhat less than a founder, yes, but not the 30-50x typical equity ratio we see today.

jazzychad··on The Nixie Tube Story: The Neon Display Tech That Engineers Can’t Quit
I've been a Nixie fan for a long time and finally started working with them ~2 years ago. Here is a custom timeline of tweets from my various projects - https://twitter.com/jazzychad/timelines/773442085278085121

jazzychad··on The Art of Making a Nixie Tube [video]
This is really cool. I've been enamored with Nixie tubes since I was a kid, and I finally got my hands on some surplus CCCP tubes and started a project with them. I'm keeping somewhat of a diary of my progress with photos and videos in this collection of tweets about the process: https://twitter.com/jazzychad/timelines/773442085278085121
jazzychad··on Show HN: InstaPart – Build circuit boards faster with instant parts
Ah, I completely didn't see that tab... Then perhaps some usability feedback; maybe create links of the already orange text in the upper left hand box (the "Average Price") and have it auto-choose the Pricing tab below and scroll the page there? Make it super easy to find :)
jazzychad··on Show HN: InstaPart – Build circuit boards faster with instant parts
Very cool! I can't seem find any links to click on to actually order parts from manufacturers when I find a part - e.g. https://www.snapeda.com/parts/MCP23017-E/SP/Microchip/view-p...

There's the whole section at the top about availability and average price, but no link to go buy it? In addition to the InstaPart revenue, are you also going to make money with affiliate sales to parts sites (a la Octopart)?

jazzychad··on Craig Steven Wright claims to be Satoshi Nakamoto
Hah, I was just thinking about Perplex City the other day and wondered if that Satoshi was ever found. I really did love that game and the community around it.
jazzychad··on ShoutKey – Snapchat for shortened URLs
Creator of ShoutKey here... haha, I'm not sure I've ever described it as the "Snapchat of URL shorteners" - but I guess that's a somewhat apt tagline.

I recently released a companion iOS app that lets you open and create (via an extension) ShoutKeys from any app app that shares URLs - https://itunes.apple.com/app/apple-store/id988889849?pt=2108...

jazzychad··on iOS app to make retro “blinkenlights” dashboards
http://blinkenlights.jazzychad.net/privacy.html

There's no funding - it's a side-project. You'll have to trust me when I say the app isn't tracking anything about the json data or passing it on to other servers.. it only uses what data you provide using the json protocol to render the UI in the app.

jazzychad··on Blinkenlights – a simple status dashboard app for iPhone
sweet!! slight typo in json - tite should be title :) when that's fixed I'll add it to the community list! also consider adding ledLabel to each blinkenlight so it's easy to know which light means what on the dashboard :)
jazzychad··on Blinkenlights – a simple status dashboard app for iPhone
yes, exactly, that would be awesome! if you make a registry I can add it to the community list.
jazzychad··on Blinkenlights – a simple status dashboard app for iPhone
ah yes :)

jazzychad··on Blinkenlights – a simple status dashboard app for iPhone
Hi everyone! Blinkenlights is a fun side-project app I made to be able to quickly see the status of anything you can dream up. I am obsessed with blinking status lights on hardware devices, so I used that as inspiration for a status dashboard UI. The app uses an open JSON protocol to drive the lights, and it's defined here: http://blinkenlights-api.jazzychad.net/spec.html - the app comes with several example lights and registries for the S&P 500 stocks to show their change during the trading day. But you can create your own using the protocol above, and if you want you can contribute to the community registry so that others can use your lights. I also added the ability for people to manually add registries (e.g. if a company wanted to publish a list of lights internally for business-related statuses). Give it a try! I'll be adding more types of output displays over time.
jazzychad··on Elevator Saga – An elevator programming game
This is incredible. I've been successfully nerd-sniped away from work. Also nice touch w/ the time-scale factors being Fibonacci numbers :) Great work.
jazzychad··on Git client vulnerability announced
/usr/bin/git is usually a soft symlink, so the original binary is still there when you rm the synlink. You can see the actual location by doing

    ls -al /usr/bin/git
If it's not in fact a symlink then yes you should probably rename it to preserve it.
