jazzejeff1··on Running a business means contact with reality
Thank you for sharing. My wife and I have been down this road in physical retail, SaaS, consulting, and real estate. It always feels like the first time when you learn slowly, and you’ve done a Good Thing by helping us all learn faster.

FYI - I tried to leave this comment on your blog, but I got a database connection error. HTH

I’m thankful for this place and this sentiment. As a young programmer I never imagined having this erudite enclave, capable of maintaining a level head during difficult days. Here’s to having community…and I agree with about half of what y’all say, because I’m aggressively anchored at the average. :)

When I found Mermaid, it changed how I could communicate and iterate on flows and higher-level designs. This gives me that same excitement - thank you for building and sharing!

Buying it. As a former wisprflow user, I love this approach.

Can licensees request source access to fix bugs and ensure they have a functioning product in the longer term?

jazzejeff1··on Gavin Newsom signs age verification law
I suspect enforcement will come in two major forms: 1) Valid enforcement against popular software that has real, demonstrated risk (ahem…ROBLOX, YouTube), and they will fight 2) Lawfare against smaller services that might represent a competitive risk and who may be a target for those in camp #1

I would never suggest that we ignore the law. I would suggest, however, that my vibe-coded tool that lets people track time and create invoices does not need to gather the age of anyone.

Common sense should be an emergent property of this new systemic regulation, and we should all aim for that.

jazzejeff1··on Murder in the Posthuman Age
As someone who was excited when social networks emerged and had enough network effect to create a public commons online, my energy now seems to be held by the social media that took their place. My dual role as engineer building these Skinner Boxes and as consumer occupying them makes this an especially challenging missive.

Get it? Otherwise, it’s a great idea with a lot of potential use cases.

Same here. At my previous employer, we’d pair regularly, even on PRs. Larger blocks of work would warrant a mini-standup so the team could all review together in real-time (after an async review with comments). It’s an efficient use of time while acknowledging the need for real-time, humane communication.
