jayrot··on DoorDash Spent $1.4M Trying to Stop Mamdani from Becoming Mayor. Now We Know Why
In case you, or anyone else, actually care or are interested, there's a great deep dive video on the history of "FASTPASS" by the youtube channel Defunctland.
jayrot··on FFmpeg 9.0
Terrific interview with Fred Murpheg

jayrot··on What's Under Your Feet in New York City?
This is actually rather impressive. Care to share the prompt you used?
jayrot··on What's Under Your Feet in New York City?
Don’t know about this specifically but if you ever watch Rainbolt you know that NYC is pretty legendary for providing crazy data to the public (for example a database of all trees, or insane detail street information)
jayrot··on Apple sues OpenAI, accuses ex-employees of stealing trade secrets
More and more I’m coming to the realization that they’re definitely not the good guy, but certainly seem to be the least bad.

jayrot··on Antimatter has been transported for the first time
I know this is all just tongue-in-cheek, but for the record, they only drove it around for 30 min around the lab site, not on the open roads.
jayrot··on Hide macOS Tahoe's Menu Icons
I strongly disagree. Tahoe is horrible but Mac hardware is terrific. Have you seen a Neo?

I think Apple is hitting it out of the park (falling behind in many other areas)

jayrot··on Banned in California
For what it's worth you still need the alcohol wipes (mineral oil works well too) when swimming off the coast of Santa Barbara. It's naturally occurring oil that gets all over your feet in little annoying sticky spots.

"Power doesn’t corrupt. It reveals." — Robert Caro
jayrot··on AI is destroying open source, and it's not even good yet [video]
You make some fair points here, but I'm unclear as to whether you're claiming Geerling's video is an example of an "overwhelmingly negative take on AI".

If so, my suspicion is that you didn't watch it.

jayrot··on OpenScan
Not sure about price vs other options but note that for the $244 price you have to 3d print your own parts and supply your own rPi etc
jayrot··on Texas A&M bans part of Plato's Symposium
There are no "language police".

I think about this quote from Ricky Gervais a lot. He's had more than a few controversies, which you may or may not agree with but I think his take here is apt.

"Please stop saying 'You can't joke about anything anymore'. You can. You can joke about whatever the fuck you like. And some people won't like it and they will tell you they don't like it. And then it's up to you whether you give a fuck or not. And so on. It's a good system."

jayrot··on Opus 4.5 is not the normal AI agent experience that I have had thus far
You wouldn't know her, though. She lives in Canada.
jayrot··on Scientists discover beer bottle in the Mariana Trench (2024)
Ugh, thought at first you might be just being mean but a quick look at its other comments 100% confirms. I don’t understand — what’s even the point of such comment slop. I mean on Reddit it’s for karma and selling accounts or whatever. But here on HN?
jayrot··on Optical diffraction patterns made with a MOPA laser engraving machine [video]
Also, really the holy grail of YouTubers — he’s not concerned with clicks or retention. He has a day job, he’s not trying to do this full time or make a career out of it. I’ve been following him for years. Legitimately just an insanely smart person doing projects on his own time he thinks are interesting and that he thinks other people might be interested in too. It’s kinda crazy when it’s as simple as that with no ulterior motives or incentives.
jayrot··on MLB approves robot umpires for 2026 as part of challenge system
Bad calls are not “soul”. There’s plenty of flair and tradition and flavor in baseball.
jayrot··on This website is for humans
Would suggest you or anyone else watch Internet Shaquille's short video on "Why Are Recipes Written Like That?"[1]. It addresses your sentiment in a rather thoughtful way.

jayrot··on Why I'm skeptical of Ground News
To be a bit pedantic, I think that YouTube sponsors aren't necessarily scams, but are definitely not generally good products or deals. It's a spectrum.
jayrot··on Unheard works by Erik Satie to premiere 100 years after his death
Talk about living rent free…the number of modern songs which are (generally obliviously) derivative of Pachelbel's Canon in D is mind boggling, which itself was surely built upon even earlier, similar chord progressions.
jayrot··on Managing time when time doesn't exist
Time does exist though, at least directionally, because of entropy, no?
jayrot··on Autopen Guide
Trey The Explainer on YouTube has a great video about “the rarest signature”, which is more like a deep dive on to what exactly is a signature and autograph (and…why)
jayrot··on Onfim's world: Child artists in history
If you've got 12 minutes to spare, I highly recommend this video about Onfim by Trey the Explainer. [https://youtu.be/H_nT6EFUZmI?si=RcFJeGjzcjkoVlh8]

But only if you wish to experience sonder.

jayrot··on Hunt for Red October 1990 (2016)
>Actor Scott Glenn, who plays the Captain of Dallas, modeled his character after our Captain, Tom Fargo.

Terrific character. I just love the competency and leadership. Hopefully your Cpt. Fargo was just as good.

My favorite exchange from the movie is when Jonesy brings his report to the captain. He's aware of how crazy this theory sounds, especially when his very serious and hard-to-read captain rephrases it back to him. Jonesy starts getting nervous and fumbling and Mancuso cuts him off -- "Relax, Jonesy. You sold me." Not quite sure why that simple line hits so hard.

jayrot··on 'Naive' science fan faces jail for plutonium import
The best is when they use flimsy arguments about needing to "make an example" or "discourage this behavior" or "create a deterrent", as if people in these situations are even aware they're doing anything wrong.
jayrot··on Show HN: I built an app to get daily wisdom from Mr. Worldwide
For real. I’m sure he got money or whatever but it does show a certain sense of humor/self awareness
jayrot··on Photographs of the Old West
For anyone particularly taken by the “sonder” described there at the beginning, I can’t recommend highly enough the video about Onfim by Trey The Explainer on YT. If you don’t already know what it’s about, I won’t spoil it. I highly doubt you’ll find it a waste of 12 minutes.

jayrot··on Part two of Grant Sanderson's video with Terry Tao on the cosmic distance ladder
Nice try but I'm not talking about Sumerians and I have a feeling you know that.
jayrot··on Part two of Grant Sanderson's video with Terry Tao on the cosmic distance ladder
Stephen Jay Gould said: "I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops."

This quote really drives home the point that the overwhelmingly vast majority of scientific discovery and progress throughout history has come with humanity's entirely self-inflicted handicapping, like a V8 engine running on only 1 cylinder. Can't help but wonder what our knowledge here in 2025 would be like had we, as a species, tapped into our full potential by empowering women and people of color (to name just a few categories) earlier. You can almost see it in action with the people mentioned here as time went on.

Wonderful set of videos.

jayrot··on Apple Debuts iPhone 16e
The obvious problem with that is that 90hz is just as good as 120hz for 95% of people. (60hz is as good as 90hz for probably 70%)
