Thanks for the question...I looked at Letsencrypt, but wanted to do some more research. There are some limitations to using Letsencrypt, but might go that way...Here is an old reddit thread I found: https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/40sp1y/whats_the_...

Thanks! Yeah this is just for demo...I had a self signed SSL but removed it for demo...I didn't buy the certificate yet. I thought no one would try it if the browsers say "This is insecure..." :)

Hey HN I'm Jay and I'm currently working on this project. Would love to hear your feedback and if this is a problem you face and how you currently solve it. I built the filtering engine a few months ago when I was just playing around and my blog (http://julesjaypaulynice.com) was constantly under attack. I'm building the UI currently and would love to get feedback. Thank you!
jaypaulynice··on How the Maker of TurboTax Fought Free, Simple Tax Filing (2013)
You can do your taxes for free using this: https://www.freefilefillableforms.com/#/fd, but it's a huge pain unless you know what you're doing. I did it last year, but it took 10+ times to submit it correctly and the errors were straight from programming errors (i.e: tax_status is not valid, etc.)

Massachusetts had free tax filing, but got rid of it this year. It was really great and fastest refund I ever received.

jaypaulynice··on Google Cloud Platform Free Tier
I do use Google Compute Engine, but the pricing on the page is extremely confusing...This is for developers who understand how things work so it shouldn't be that confusing. The page you mention has a 'Try it for free' but brings me back to the sign up page and it only mentions the $300 credit for 12 months.

So it's unclear what I'm signing up for...and I need a credit card so Google can confirm I'm not a bot? I have the same problem with using the Cloud platform...I have to search google to find anything like the firewall/networking/billing etc...

jaypaulynice··on Google Cloud Platform Free Tier
I see "free trial" when I signed up...still not sure what free tier is...
jaypaulynice··on Google Cloud Platform Free Tier
Even a toy project will burn through this in less than 60 days...I was expecting a free tier as in free up to 1GB or something like that...a little misleading because the site makes it sound that.
jaypaulynice··on Google Cloud Platform Free Tier
I was excited for a second, but nothing has changed from what was there already...$300 credit that can be used within 12 months. Am I mistaken?
jaypaulynice··on YC will hold interviews in Vancouver for founders who can’t get US visas
Why even go to that length when you can interview on video?
jaypaulynice··on Men not at work: Why so many men aged 25 to 54 are not working (2016)
I think it's the other way around...able men aren't looking for work because the job market isn't attractive. They must be doing something that satisfies them one way or another. I have a problem when people start pointing out that they must be junkies doing drugs and alcohol.

To think that a dysfunctional "job" is somehow superior means there is some kind of social agenda/engineering going on...blaming the people who are affected when it's clear that the problem is employers looking for cheaper outsourcing. What we have right now is social engineering and "thought leaders" trying to excuse the obvious.

I think it's extremely concerning to think someone who doesn't work isn't a productive member of society and to conclude that they're doing household chores. Many rich people who inherit their fortunes do not work, but no one says they are junkies etc...

jaypaulynice··on Ask HN: What is 1 thing that can take a Junior's career to the next level?
Work in a startup and try to do a little bit of everything (code, devops, marketing, selling). Be really good at 2 of those at least and just hit the ground running.

You might not know how to do something, but ask to do it anyways and learn it on the go. Big corporations will not give you that kind of opportunity so you have to find a startup or create one yourself.

Code and blog a lot and put everything on GitHub and try to get people to star your projects and follow you. Learn to design, architect and structure your code for large systems.

jaypaulynice··on Problems with Android Studio
This guy should have tried coding for Android before Android Studio...then he would realize how much better things have gotten. Oh don't forget about unit tests... I get frustrated with it sometimes, but It's still much better than before...
jaypaulynice··on Ask HN: What is your weekend project?
https://github.com/julesbond007/Android-Jigsaw-Puzzle started as a weekend project but evolved a little bit. It's not complete yet. A user draws something and use it to create jigsaw puzzles.
jaypaulynice··on Evernote’s transition to Google Cloud Platform
I think Youtube is still using Akamai but not as much anymore and Google's CDN is in beta last I checked. Google partners with other major CDN's also.

https://cloud.google.com/interconnect/cdn-interconnect

jaypaulynice··on Evernote’s transition to Google Cloud Platform
You know Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Google, etc and other major companies use CDN's like Akamai to deliver their content to users right?

Building a few data centers may not be not be hard and may be cheaper, what's hard is serving content fast and as close to your users as possible in the world. For that how many data centers could you really build?!

jaypaulynice··on Recommend a Founder for YC
I think a lot of early stage startups look up to YC acceptance as validation, but when you apply at the early stage, you get rejected almost automatically. Too much emphasis on number of users, revenue, etc. So a lot of potentially great startups die before they even see the light of day.

Feedback to early stage startups could encourage more founders to apply and keep going. Otherwise it's time consuming to put an application together.

I have a feeling that the next Facebook, Google, etc. will not be discovered in any accelerator program.

jaypaulynice··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
Agree on this one 100%. I can't believe how many people depend on prescription drugs in America. I remember when I was a kid, my grandparents knew all kind of tea they could make when someone was sick. The problem is that the tea leaves are not readily available in America.

jaypaulynice··on Ask HN: What are the best resources to create an LLC/Incorporate?
Clerky https://www.clerky.com seems to be pretty good and straight forward.
jaypaulynice··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2017)
Medviv | Co-Founder/Business Dev/Engineer | Boston | https://medviv.io

Early stage startup. Checkout our submission in the Boston Scientific and Google Connected Patient Challenge: https://medstro.com/posts/5307

It's still early, but we're looking to change healthcare using machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, etc.

jaypaulynice··on Welcome, ACLU
I like what New Story is doing. I was born in Haiti. But I'm asking about San Francisco. Seems like a lot of companies talk about helping poor countries, but here in America it's a different thing. Living in a different country you would think homelessness is non-existent in America.

I think there is a danger when powerful companies start going all political and throwing money at a problem instead of talking and discussions. You get 2 sides that keep pulling against each other and it becomes a matter of who has the most money!

jaypaulynice··on Welcome, ACLU
But where is the response to homelessness in SF right in YC's backyard? This sounds like PR more than anything! Why take advantage of a bad situation?
jaypaulynice··on Welcome, ACLU
Come on YC, glad you're funding the ACLU and it's much needed, but where is the response to the homelessness in San Francisco for example? We care more about refugees than people who already live here?! Too many companies are taking advantage of a bad situation for PR and marketing!
jaypaulynice··on Parse is shutting down today
Pbly talent grab and also it gave them a view of up and coming apps they could target for acquisition: http://www.businessinsider.com/why-facebook-acquired-parse-f...
jaypaulynice··on Launch HN: Peer5 (YC W17) – Serverless CDN
How do you evaluate something like this at YC? Do you bring experts in the field or is the decision based on team, idea, and traction?
jaypaulynice··on Launch HN: Peer5 (YC W17) – Serverless CDN
This sounds like Red Swoosh, a company Travis Kalanick (Uber CEO) started and was acquired by Akamai back in 2007. I was surprised that Akamai is a partner. They already do that...

But anyways CDN is highly commoditized now and most big players are building their own solutions. What advantage do you offer? It does not seem like it would be a great solution for live streaming...

Also this sounds like a perfect target for DDoS attacks...

jaypaulynice··on How to Save CNN from Itself
How do you save the NY Times from itself? Seems like they're in the same hole. Every country has strong public radio and tv, but in the US they are mostly run by private organizations with agendas. So why is this in the NY Times?
jaypaulynice··on Ask HN: Why YC companies don't raise money after Demo day
Sure, but you have the option of saying "Undisclosed" right? Seems like a lot of startups use funding rounds for PR. I wanted to know if 120k is sustainable for more than 6 months or these startups have something else going for them...some could be profitable right away, but not half of all the startups...
jaypaulynice··on Ask HN: Where can we find the YC W17 company list?
http://www.ycombinator.com/companies/ filter by batch YC W17 is last in the list, but it's incomplete...I think they're revealing 1 company a day via Launch HN title...
jaypaulynice··on I Am a Recruiter (a.k.a Spammer) at Amazon
Worst a recruiter can do is call your company's main line and ask to speak to you (found your name on LinkedIn). And then they're like: "Hi Jay, how are you?" like you're best buddies.
jaypaulynice··on Doomsday Prep for the Super-Rich
I see it the other way around. I think Facebook and Twitter's goals are to disrupt that kind of chaos with their "trending" section. While these platforms can be used to mobilize, they can pinpoint exact location of unrest and try to prevent that kind of stuff from happening.
